My daughter is 2 years and 2 months old. She loves jewelry and is always admiring my mother's and my rings and necklaces. She asks to wear them and we let her play around. I bought her a child bracelet when she was a little over a year that she always wears and she loves it. I have seen some cute child necklaces but I have a fear of her wearing one (and it getting caught on something and strangling her). Not sure if I am being paranoid or if it is a valid fear. At what age can a child wear a necklace? Just a thin sterling chain with a pink heart pendant or something like that. She already has earrings that she loves too. Thanks for sharing.

What can I do next?

I think my daughter was about 4 years old when she started wearing necklaces. I got her a nice sterling silver one, but it broke, luckily she did not loose the charm. I try not to spend too much on jewelry for her because kids play and things break or get lost. She's 7 years old now and takes better care of her jewelry.

Well if she knows not to eat it or put it in her ears, nose, etc. and if you trust her enough to know she won't do those things then I don't see a problem with getting her a necklace.. Just make sure she takes it off at night and when she gets a bath.. Hope this helps.

My 5.5 year old just starting wearing necklaces. Up until this point, I didn't trust her enough. She is old enough now to know to take off her jewelry before playing, etc. She even remembered last week where she put the necklace and bracelet when she took them off.

I did let her wear a thin chain with a pendant at 4, but only to dinner at my mom's. You need to be careful about her playing with jewelry on.

I second looking for pop it beads. Otherwise, hold off until 5 or 6.

a lot of people put their babies in necklaces of amber beads because they believe amber is a natural cure for teething pain. To me, it's very irresponsible to put a baby in a beaded necklace and smells of snake oil, but that's my opinion. Personally, I wouldn't do it - I think my daughter was allowed to start wearing necklaces around six or so. It was the age I felt she was able to be careful about not breaking, choking on, or losing it.

Valid fear. Didn't some movie stars daughter die on a treadmill because she had on a necklace?

I think if you find one that has a clasp that gives way easily that would be okay but it might also make her feel like she has permission to put stuff around her neck.

Please go to www.cpsc.gov and search "lead children's jewelry."

It's frightening but true: A LOT of children's jewelry contains lead at levels much higher than is safe. Kids can swallow it and get very ill. This is why, when she was small, my daughter never got any little necklaces etc. from the dime store or dollar store or anything like that. Not worth the risk There are recalls and alerts all the time about jewelry marketed to kids but found to have dangerous levels of lead.

As for real jewelry -- you mention a sterling chain and a pendant -- two is just too young. She is likely to forget she is wearing it when she gets busy playing, and it could catch on playground equipment or even something at home and pull on her neck. Sure, a thin chain might break, but before it does she's going to get hurt and will be terrified. Or she'll lose it and be upset that it's gone. When she is old enough she won't put things in her mouth EVER (and two is not old enough to guarantee that, I think), then get her non-toxic beads and let her make her own necklaces and bracelets galore.

How strong is the chain? say she is climbing something do you think it will give? If not, I would only allow her to wear it when you can watch her.

A thin chain is going to break if she cathes it on something hard enough to potentially choke her. I think it would be safe.

Do they make pop it beads anymore? Those are fun, safe and are creative.
