OK ... so we went to Hawaii with our 17 month old and were there for 2 weeks. He adjusted pretty well while we were there, but not that we're back home ... um ... not so much. We've been putting him in bed around the same normal bedtime, but up to an hour later, and he cries and then drifts off for a couple of hours. Then he's up and won't go back down. Last night it took me an hour to get him settled. Tonight we're at 1.5 hours and we're just TIRED, but he doesn't seem to be. HELP!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks all! We'll continue to enforce the routine.

@Jo W ... We went to Hawaii and it's a 6 hour difference to come back East. You're right ... Going there was easy. It's just the getting home.

@Riley J ... I think you may have misread ... We were in Hawaii for 2 weeks. We've only been home 3 nights. We did try infant Advil last night, though, just in case, and it didn't help, much to my dismay.

Thanks all for your suggestions and advice!

After 2 weeks... I'll lay money it's not jet lag.

Teeth
Cold/Flu
Ears
Sinuses
GrowthSpurt
etc.

Try the tylenol test. As in give him some tylenol and see if he's conked out in about 20 minutes and stays asleep for 4-8 hours. If so, then you know it's some sort of physical pain that's not bad enough to be noticeable in the day, but when it's time to be quiet and sleep... it's keeping him from sleeping / waking him up.

It's REALLY common for toddlers and children to get sick over vacation because of the plane trip and new people in wherever you just were (just like starting school).

There's also a really nasty head cold going around which is about 1 week of feeling off/cranky/sore but okay and 1 week of being biserable, wiff a nobe you cant breif dru, and day head dat beels like ibts going to essplode. If you're extra unlucky you'll get the chest cold thats going around, too.

I was wondering where you went because going forward in time is the hard direction. Losing hours just hurts.

I have never traveled with children but it took us about a week to get used to the time change going to Europe (other direction) and 24 hours to get used to going back.

You just have to keep forcing the routine until it feel routine again.

We've traveled a few times to Africa and back (8-10hr difference) and I remember some AWFUL nights. It gets better, it's just hard for everyone in the mean time. They say you're supposed to give one full day for every hour of the time difference so within a week, things should be back to normal. We sometimes give our kids a small dose of melatonin. It's over the counter but your pediatrician might have recommendations for dosage. We do about 1/4 of a chewable pill from Trader Joes per kid. It helps to wake him up in the morning at the normal time (7 or whenever you woke up before) despite how tired you are and do something outside first thing in the morning. You can always have him take an earlier afternoon nap but reestablishing a normal morning wake time should really help readjust his body. Good luck!

You have my sympathy. I did a similar trip with my son the same age and it was TOUGH!!! You even have an extra hour difference tacked on. Going East is much harder on sleep patterns than going West. Hang in there...
