I have pretty good dental insurance and I found a really good dentist who referred by my daughters pediatrition. I absolutly adore the dentist and I love the fact that her office is walking distance from my house. The only problem is I think its very expensive. I recently cracked my tooth and this tooth needs a crown. The total cost for this procedure is $1155. Of that $1155 by insurance pays about 1/2. So the cost is still approx. $550 out of pocket. Is this normal or am I seeing an expensive dentist????

thanks!

I still live in Indy, we are moving in October out there,,,BUT about 6 years ago, I had to have a crown put on and had to pay 500.00 out of pocket,,so No,,,,550 isn't that expensive...my friends have had some put on and that's around what they paid too.

Sounds similiar to what I paid about a year ago when I had a root canal and had to have a crown put on. I think most of the cost is the crown itself. I look forward to hearing others repsonses, as I now might have to get my crown re-done.

Good Luck!

I went to a monarch and had a cap and three fillings filled for a total bill that matched yours. I think your dentist is expensive. I guess you will just have to weigh whether it is worth it or not.

Yes that is about right, I spent a little more than that when I broke a tooth but I had to get a root canal. I think your dentist is in line with what everyone else charges. When I was pregnant I started grinding my teeth, I broke 3 teeth so I spent lots of money. That sounds like a very fair price.

Yes, yours is actually less than what I paid for my crown. After insurance, my out-of-pocket was $750 for my crown -- mine was one of my molars in the far upperback of my mouth so he had to do some reshaping and sculpting of the crown.

In my experience dental insurance hardly covers a thing. Seems like I've spent about $900 a pop on crowns and/or root canals. You may need to do some investigating on preferred providers and your exact coverage.

I just had 2 crowns because I kept knocking out my fillings and making them worse (I have a bad habit of crunching on ice). I also had a front tooth slightly chipped and they filed it down and a small filling. All that came out to about $880. That is with my insurance paying 50%. It also depends on your maximum total annual coverage. I think mine is $1500. So, I think your dentist is a bit over priced. My dentist is great. I have been with him for years. He even has plasma tv's on top of the chairs, so I got to watch Oceans 11 while I was getting worked on. You could probably get a second opinion from him. Dr. Haight Family Dentistry off of Preston.

I just went to the dentist today and found out that I need a crown and the total is $680 (that includes the build up and cleaning out the tooth) and of that I only have to pay $333. I think if you are not having a root canal and it's a basic porcelin crown the price is way too high. My crown is porcelin with gold is what my estimate paper says.

Is this dentist a preferred dentist on your plan? If not, I would find another one.

Good Luck

That sounds like what I paid for my crown. I think it's normal. Sadly, dental is not fully covered most insurances and it is not cheap. Better than being toothless though!

My husband recently had a crown which on paper was going to cost about the same thing. However, I realized after talking to both the dentist & the insurance that sometimes there is a preferred rate for your insurance. For example, the regular charge was $920 for the crown & $263 for the build up. However, because we went to a Cigna preferred dentist the maximum they could charge was the preferred fee which was $590 for the crown & $91 for the build-up. Then our insurance paid by the line item. We were lucky & got away with only ~ $100 but it took some figuring out. Good luck!
