Whimsy is a favorite of my son's. (it's puzzles.) I also like quizzing, because it works on shapes and letters and such.
Hi-
We are getting ready for a 6.5 hour flight with our 3.5 year old son. Do you have any apps that you like to use with you child? We usually don't let him play video games, so this is going to be a big treat, (and probably the start of him asking to play often.) I like the idea of the games or activities being somewhat educational and one of us will likely be playing along - coaching- monitoring closely, cause where can you escape to when on the plane. :)
Thanks for your advice.

My 5 1/2 year old son and my 2 1/2 year old daughter are iPad pros. Here are their favorite apps and most are under $3 each = ) Each of these apps can be run by my children on their own and they are engaging enough to be fun to help them with.
Read to Me -
(has a red monster reading a book) An audio book library that reads to the child. It gives you are free book a day and we have like 20 in the library now.
Teach Me -
( they have toddler, kindergarten and first grade versions)
Teachs colors, basic math and language arts in a format that is fun and super easy. They get to buy prizes with their rewards. - MY FAVORITE APPS!!! They are $0.99 each and very well made.
Monkey Lunchbox -
Basic phonics, colors and thinking skills taught by a monkey = )
Alphabet -
(has a robot on the front) mini games for each letter
MeeGenuis -
Another audio book library with a medium sized free selection
Animatch -
Memory match game that makes animal sounds.
Alpha Tots -
Another alphabet with mini games for each letter (Better that the other alphabet app I listed, but only available on the iPad
Starfall ABC -
Good alphabet game as well.
Story Chimes -
Has a large selection of audio storybooks that also read to the child. Some are free, some are $0.99. You might want to view these stories first. They are not always the standard story and I have not always been impressed with their changes
That is all I can think of right now = ) We love our iPads and they are great for travel! You might want to get a kid friendly set of ear muff type headphones for the plane as well. We found some sound limiting ones that fit comfortably for less than $30. Kind of pricey, but worth it in an enclosed space.
My 3 1/2 yo girl and her same age boy cousin LOVE the Handy Manny app!

A little late to the discussion, sorry. Here is a great app I'd recommend for your child, he will enjoy and learn Continents, United States and landmarks, Numbers, Counting, Alphabets, Memory and Matching from this perfect learning game Preschool Monster Island from hiMahi.com.

http://www.himahi.com .......where it is Play + Learn = :)
Tozzle, angry birds, Dora rhyming, superwhy. Good luck.
Thanks for the question! I'm also interested in the apps that kids enjoy.
I have negative feedback for Hidden Pictures from Highlights- surprising, because we love the paper version. It's too hard for 4.5yo to operate by himself.
Monkey Lunchbox and ZooWho are my son favorite educational apps. Then there is always Angry Birds but that, of course, is not educational but it did keep my son busy on our 5 hours flight a few months ago!
My girls and I are having a great time with pocket frogs. the frog hops from lily pad to lily pad and eats flies. its very simple, but offers complexity in the form of collecting frogs and different habitats. it's not very educational, but very fun.
there are some great trace-letters apps that I can't think of the name of that are also very engaging.
sound drop is great, and i am a big fan of other music apps, like a virtual keyboard or drums or guitar, as these are educational and fun.
