I've always just loosely covered my pies with a piece of foil for the last 15 minutes (or so) of baking. Works great for me!
I am baking an apple pie for Easter dinner. I am using Pillsbury's refrigerated pie crusts. I haven't baked a crusted pie in a long time and I want it to turn out good meaning no burnt edges. All suggestions and tips are appreciated.

I always think it would be nice to have a shield but I never think about getting one until I'm already making a pie, so I just use foil.
I bake pies a few times a year. I use pie shields.
I found them at Bed, Bath and Beyond for under $5. I think mine was only like $2-3.
Do bring your pie pan to make sure it fits.
Use foil if you don't bake many pies. If you want a pie shield check out second hand stores. I see them there all the time.
Love my pie shield, and I don't bake many pies. The foil always falls off.
Use foil. When I cleaned out my mom's house after she passed away I found brandnew pie shields - the only problem is that they didn't fit well and foil actually worked better.
I have a pie shield and I love that little thing. Definitely worth the small investment. But they do have different sizes so take the pie dish you will be using to make sure you get one that fits or find an adjustable shield (my mom has an adjustable one).
Foil works fine for me.
Just use the foil. If you baked all the time I could see investing in a pie shield but for baking once or twice a year its not worth it.
I bake a fair amount of pies and have always used foil, but I want a pie shield. .
If you only bake pies very occasionally, use foil. It works just as well.
This might sound obvious, but if you do decide to get a pie shield, make sure it works with your pie plate. My pie plates don't work with most shields, because they have these little handles on the sides that are wider than the handle openings on the shields.
I got a pie shield years ago - they are fairly cheap - it was worth it.
i didn't even know there were 'pie shields'!
now i want one.

S. (who rarely bakes pies, and just uses foil)
I've never heard of a pie shield, where did you see that?
I just use foil. Works fine.
(Instead of forming O. piece of foil all around the pie? Use 3 or 4 smaller pieces.)
I've tried to use foil. It kept coming off and was a hassle. I used the aluminum shields and they were a hassle having to store them. They are lightweight and bend easily. Also because they are light they slipped
Just last week I bought a silicone set. They are a bit heavier and easily stored. I haven't uses them yet. I think they will be easier to use. They cost less than $5.
