I have a friend with domestic violence problems. She has some cloth for her and her children at my house in case she needs to escape, but we have no idea about shelters in the area. Do someone of you know a domestic violence shelter around Dallas, Richardson and/or Plano. My house is full and I wont be able to provide her with shelter for more than a night. Please help.

You can call the Collin County Child Advocacy Center which is located off Los Rios and Park in Plano. They will know where the shelter is.
Garland has a great shelter and tons of programs at
The New Beginning Center in Downtown Garland. They have tons of resources. Buckner runs a home for mothers and their children as does All Church Home she can live for 6 months to get on her feet.
I feel for your friend. I was a victim of domestic violence myself. However, my family system was supportive enough I didn't require the benefits of a shelter. However, I am now in graduate school working on a degree in occupational therapy and as as student I have volunteered at The Family Place. They have locations everywhere. Your friend just needs to get on their website and call their helpline. They will help her escape and their locations are secret. I worked at one in Mesquite, but they are everywhere. They offer a free preschool and afterschool program taught by qualified teachers, their rooms are like hotel rooms but she can apply to get an apartment there (takes 30days I think). They have classes she can take, counselors and all kinds of other support. There is another shelter in Dallas called New Beginnings but according to my classmates who worked their it's not as nice or as organized, but it's still a place. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Best regards,
R.

Genesis Women's Shelter is set up just for this need. Your friend can call and they'll tell her how to get there. They don't publish their location so abusers can't locate them, however they are in the southern part of Dallas and very accessible. The counselors there are very well trained in these specific cases. I hope your friend gets the help she needs.

I use to work above their building, they are wonderful.
M.,
You should check out Hopes Door. It is a shelter in an undisclosed area for battered and abused women and children somewhere around Dallas. I volunteer at an auction every year to help them raise money. Let me know if you need more info on it or if you need help finding the contact info. I dont have it with me now but have some contacts that could get me the right info to pass along. Good Luck.

Maybe this will help. Here are two listings in Dallas and one in Plano. My husband is a Dallas Police Officer and so I happen to hear a lot about this stuff. Let me know if you need anything else.

I am new to the area and have not been in her situation, so I know very little about available resources for your friend, but after I saw your request, I did some online research and found a few links that may get you the information you and your friend need. God bless you both and I pray she is safe.

M.,
There is a shelter for your friend in Plano called Hope's Door. They provide shelter, food, and counseling. She can stay there for at least one month, and after that they will pay at least one months rent. I pray that your friend will go there, it could change her life-she deserves it, and so do her kids.

Please have your friend contact Jewish Family Services. The number is ###-###-####. You do not have to be Jewish to use their services - they serve the community. They have a strong campaign to combat domestic violence and would certainly be able to provide you with the numbers and addresses your friend would need.
Good luck to your friend.
There are two excellent domestic violence agencies in Dallas that I would recommend. The Family Place is an amazing agency that provides shelter and all sorts of other resources. It is well known in the Dallas community and nationwide as a leader in this area. She can call their 24 hour hotline at ###-###-####. I would also recommend the Genesis Women's Shelter. They are another very good agency with excellent staffing. They are a bit smaller, but just as good. She can contact them on their 24 hour hotline at 214-946-HELP. These are two well know, trusted agencies who at the very least can provide your friend with trained advice on this issue. I am glad you have the courage to assist her and to help her seek further help. There are other domestic violence agencies in the DFW area, but there are two that are in Dallas. If she needed one near Richardson, I'm sure they could help her figure out if there was a closer agency. Good luck to you and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I used to be an active volunteer with the Family Place and a shelter in Austin.
