Infected Nose from a Cold?

About 7 years ago, I got a horribly infection in my nose, around the nostril, that looked like yellow, crusty blisters- my boyfriend at the time had a spot like that on his lip, and about a day later, it appeared on my nose. Ever since then, whenever I get a cold, I get these spots around my nostrils. The boyfriend told me it was impetigo, but when I described it to my doc a couple years ago, she was skeptical. I put prescription stength anti-biotic cream and alcohol on it, and it usually clears up in a couple days, but in the meantime, I have these nasty sores on my nose and it gets swollen. Does this sound like impetigo to anyone? Also, if it is, I don't want to give it to my son!

It actually sounds like a cold sore (you can get them tons of places) Impetigo would not go away without an antibiotic, it spreadds like crazy if left untreated. My daughter had it this past summer and within 1 day she had it in 7 spots on her body, it took a week of oral antibiotics and cream. It is a strep or staph virus. Anyway...yours is more than likely a cold sore, otc doesnt really work, valtrex does work great (use it at the very first indication and it usually never even appears) but use sparingly as it is bad for the kidney.

I agree with the ladies....I'd bet it is Herpes simples 1.
This is a virus like chicken pox, shingles and cold sores.
It is not contagious nor is it an STD. I get the lip sores any time I eat too much citrus or rub my lips vigorously or under alot of stress.
I've seen the sores on the nose before. It's not uncommon. Anyway, Valtrex would help. I'd talk to my doc about it and keep some on hand at all times I do. I take it as soon as I see or feel it coming on and it stops it immediatley.
Good Luck

it sounds like herpes simplex- which is a "cold sore". They are contagious, and common on lips, especially at the border of the colored part of the lip and at the rim of the nose. They are caused by a virus, so the anti-biotic is not a lot of help.It will clear up in a couple of days unless your immune system is depressed or supressed by another illness. Keep your hands away from your nose and your nose away from other people when you have them....

Sounds like a cold sore. I have gotten cold sores since I was a little kid. They are blistery sores that form a yellowish crust on them as they heal.

Most of the time they are found around the mouth, but it is not uncommon for them to appear in and around the nose. I have gotten several just inside my nostril.

THEY ARE HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS!!!!!!!!! Which is why you got it when your boyfriend had one on his lip.

First, we need to address the contamination issue. When you have one. Do NOT drink from anyone elses glass... boyfriend, kids, etc... Do NOT touch your eyes or any other part of your body (particularly your genitals. Althouhg it is rare to transfer from your face to your genitals, it can happen). Be sure to wash your hands several times a day, and ALWAYS after you have touched the sore. Do not kiss anyone while you have an outbreak. Do not touch the sore and then touch someone else. As long as you have the sore, take GREAT precautions.

Second, treatment. Valtrex does work. Abreva also works if you don't catch it before it blisters. The signs it is coming is burning and itching. However, I will tell you from my experience I often miss the signals when they are in my nose... I just feel like I have an itchy nose and the idea it is a cold sore escapes me.

Also, I lived in Europe for a couple of years and they have a device that looks like a lipstick tube. It has a little metal pad on it that heats up really hot and you hold it over the location for a period of 4 seconds or something. It beeps. I've not tried to find it here ... but a google search may give you results. I would try 'electronic cold sore remedy' or something like that. I will tell you IT WORKS!!! If I catch it when I first feel the itch... I never get the sore. If the sore does break out it doesn't get big and it goes away quickly.

Also, you will most likely continue to get them in the same place. Cold sores are a herpes virus. The herpes virus lives in your nervous system on one particular nerve branch. It will continue to lay dormant on that nerve branch until it's 'trigger' factor appears...then it travels down that nerve to the eruption site. Now, you CAN spread the virus and then it will live in multiple places. This is why it is so important to not touch any other part of your face or body once you have a blister.

In addition, you can never rid your body of the herpes virus. Sorry. Once you have it, it's with you forever. They have not found a way to rid your body of it completely.

There ARE things you can do to keep the virus dormant. Obviously colds are a trigger for you. Keep up your immune system during cold season. Be sure to wash your hands regularly during cold season. I have also found taking one tums per day when I experience my trigger factors helps as well. Something with the calcium and higher acids in your system triggering the cold sore.

Other people swear by taking a lyseine tablet daily. I haven't really tried that since I have found other things that work.

You will also want to see if there are other things that may be triggering them as well. Food is often a biggie. Particularly acidic foods... tomatoes, oranges, lemons.

HOpe this helped.

Its most likely the herpes virus.. I think it would be better to ask for Zovirax ( i may have spelled that wrong) cream to put on it when the outbreak happens. It is contagious,so be careful when you get it.. As hard as it may be don't kiss your son especially. Sometimes the herpes virus shows up in strange spots other than just the lip. Most people carry this pest of a virus, one version of it or another, so don't freak out about the thought of having it.

Hi, My vote is for herpes simplex virus and you can give it to your son or husband when it's active. As the other moms mentioned, keeping an antiviral cream or oral medicine around is a great idea (I think they're both Rx's) you could get from your dentist or doctor. Good luck! Laurie E.

Ask your doc to give you an Rx for Valtrex 1gram to keep on hand...at the first tingle you can take it to prevent the outbreak.

Cold sore treatment is a fairly new indication for Valtrex even though it has been used for that for a long time. The package information will tell your doc the indicated dose for it.

I agree with a lot of the below....it is likely cold sores, which are caused by the herpes virus. There are two strains, ones on the face, and then the other ones...they don't tend to cross, if that is a consolation. I know someone who also gets them on the nose... Impetego is EXTREMELY contagious, the fluid inside of the blisters, anyway. I had it as a kid and was confined to one chair with a blanket over it. That was the only place I could sit!! Anyway, your doc can give you a prescription for a topical and a pill...kicks it out very quickly.... Hope this helps!

That is definitely impetigo. My niece gets it all the time. It actually lives in the nose and just becomes visable during colds or illness. They actually have an impetigo cream that can be prescribed. Be careful because this can spread all over. My niece once had it all over her face. Not good!

Impetigo is a skin infection typically caused by one of two bacteria: group A streptococcus (the same bacteria that cause strep throat) or staphylococcus aureus. These fairly common bacteria are found on the skin of healthy people. When the skin is broken - like with a cut or a scratch - they can enter the open wound and cause impetigo. Someone who becomes infected develops blisters that usually burst, ooze fluid, and then harden into a honey-colored crust.

Impetigo can affect skin anywhere on the body but often attacks the area around the nose and mouth. It is more likely to show up on skin that is already irritated or raw from a runny nose or cold, eczema, poison ivy, or a skin allergy to soap or makeup. Infected bug bites are also a common cause of impetigo, especially during the summertime.

Touching the infected skin and then touching another part of the body can spread the infection to that spot. It also can be spread to someone else if another person touches the infected area. Because kids in preschool and elementary school have lots of close contact with other kids, impetigo occurs most commonly in them, but anyone can get it.

Sounds like a cold sore in a "funny" location. Your Dr. can look at it when its active and tell usually, but I also think it can be tested to see what virus it contains as well.
Good luck,

I have had these since I was a child. It is likely the herpes virus that has been brought up before. There are several medications you can get from the Dr. and you can also try Abreva. Others can get it from you so be careful during an outbreak.
