Cold Sore While Pregnant

I am 27 weeks pregnant and just discovered a cold sore developing on my lip. I haven't had one in over 8 years and I know there are new products available to help speed up the recovery time, but I don't know if they're safe to take while pregnant (the Abreva website says no test have been done to determine its safety while pregnant or breastfeeding). Does anyone have any advice or experience about this? I want it gone asap! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I got a call back from my OB's office today and she told me to take the Abreva. I hope it works quickly. Maybe next time I'll try a prescription, but this was the fastest remedy to obtain for now. I'm think I'm going to start taking lysine regularly, since I've been told by doctors that it won't cure a sore you already have but it can help to prevent outbreaks. This whole thing just stinks. Thanks for your input!

If I am not mistaken, cold sores can be cleared up with Riboflavin (you could have a deficiency). Ask your doctor (or better yet, find a naturopath/homeopath) that can give you more information about how to treat the cold sores with holistic/natural means.

Hi E.,

I'm a regular with cold sores. They are awful. When I get them....not just one, not 2, 3 on my bottom lip. My OBGyn prescribed Denivir (spelling??). I'm not sure if it's safe for pregnancy. Check with your doc. BUT, it a wonder ointment.

Good luck....congrats

Lysine works great on cold sores. You are more susceptible to them while pregnant because
your immune system isn't as strong. Lysine is with all the vitamins and is totally safe during and after pregnancy.

I used to get cold sores all the time. I love Abreva. I put it on as soon as a feel the heat or the bump. In most cases it keeps my cold sores from getting really big. Without the Abreva, my cold sores take up half my lip. Not pretty. With the Abreva, they are just a small bump. If your OB says it's ok, that's what I recommend. You should always consult your OB before trying any meds (otc or otherwise) while you're pregnant or bf'ing. You shouldn't have to make an appt, just a simple phone call should work.

I use Abreva during, after, while breastfeeding. It's completely safe. It's not like you are putting this in your body. It's just on the skin. I've used this all my life, and even while pregnant. And my kids are all normal (smile). I wouldn't be to concerned with this unless it was something oral.

I would check with the ob's office, they are the best informed on such things. Even tough Abreva is a topical, it is still absorbed through the skin. Also, be aware that cold sores are generally herpes simplex virus which is VERY communicable so it may be wise to let the ob know anyway.

E.,
I am an Ob/Gyne nurse and Abreva is safe to use during pregnancy. Also, there are some prescription meds such as Valtrex which are also safe to use and very effective at shortening the length of the outbreak (I know most people think of Valtrex for genital herpes, but essentially its the same virus as the cold sore herpes). Ask your doc what they recommend. Good luck and feel better soon!!

My doctor gave me a prescription to Xovorax that you can use while you're pregnant. Depending on your prescription drug coverage, this may be cheaper than buying something OTC and it works FAST!
