R.,
I would love to also get some info on these classes? Is it offer through the YMCA? Let me know please. Thanks
Hello ladies, I am not sure if you have all seen the video on You Tube or the Today Show a few months ago where Infant Swimming Resource was featured. They showed a video of an 11-month old baby falling into a swimming pool and rescuing himself by swimming up to the surface and flipping over on his back to float and breathe. It was the most incredible thing I've ever seen - and actually made me cry the first time I watched it! I tried to contact the company but found that the closest instructor was St. Louis.
Well, I saw them at the Babies R Us fair in Naperville a few weeks ago, and they are finally holding classes here. I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this type of class and if you would consider sending your child through this "survival swimming" lesson? They said it's not swimming lessons like you would get at the YMCA, but more of a "self-rescue skill". I am considering signing up my daughter for their classes in Plano next week for 6 weeks.
I guess my only concern is the price. The lessons pricey, but am I bad person for trying to justify this expense? At what point do I put a price tag on my child's safety? We live around so many lakes and ponds, and we have a pool at the clubhouse in our subdivision. One of our neighbors has a pool as well. I would be devestated if something happened to my daughter and she fell into one of these pools. I was wondering if anyone else had taken these classes elsewhere and could shed some light on the subject. I really want to get her into these classes before she gets too old. I think they go up to 4 years old. Thanks!

If I could afford it, and my child was under 3 yrs old, I would sign up my child in a heartbeat.
The Y does NOT teach them that type of thing when they are under 4 yrs old. My kids had Y lessons and I know.
If you ever go on vacation where there is water or visit a pool, this type of lesson would be invaluable.

All 3 of my kids learned swimming at the ymca in Naperville. There is a parent-child program that is well done. The childrens pool at Washington street ymca is more shallow and warmer than the pool at 95th street ymca.

Hopefully, the neighbors pool has a fence. It will be a while before your daughter will be able to get into someone's pool or nearby lakes themselves. I would go with the YMCA since if she can swim, she does not need to be rescued. The YMCA also teaches young ones how to float. The YMCA is more reasonably priced.
