I started my son, Austin, at 8 months old for their summer program. I was thrilled with the lessons because they were fun and he learned to, a) not be afraid of the water, b) start learning to float on his back and c) start learning to climb out of the pool. I also think it was great that they teach the babies/children that if they fall in, to turn around and grab the wall (versus follow their instinct and swim/paddle forward to where they are looking, which would be to the opposite end of the pool, an unlikely ability). At the end of the summer he was 1 yr old and I realized that he would forget everything unless we continued the lessons, which we did. So, this is going to be an ongoing expense if you intend to start it, which you need to consider.
We took a break from the classes at the new year (Jan 08) when he was 2 and a half. It was a little tough getting Austin to swim on his own and put his head under the water at the beginning of the summer, but after a couple of weeks he was doing great. His breath control is back and he will even jump off a diving board to my husband who waits in the deep end for him. Unfortunately, he is now too afraid to float on his back and he still needs to learn more about swimming, what to do if he fell in, etc. I know this is a result of not having him continue the lessons, which has me a little sad.
I plan to save my money and put BOTH my boys in the classes as their Christmas presents this year. That will help to have them ready for summer of 09.
I have loved EVERY class, every instructor and every session we've participated in. If it weren't for the expense, it would be a no-brainer for me to have them enrolled permanently.
