My son is a 7th grader in the lowest scoring district. I cannot get any leads as to where i can get him Tutoring. I have tried Sylvian and it is way to expensive. I did keep him down in the 6th grade due to his lack of comprehension. His is dyxlexic and can get by. I have tried to many times with his school to get help. They have instructed me that he needs to take responsiblity. I do believe that is partially true. I also explained to them that i would not allow my son to be another number in the school system. I need help in finding reliable in-expensive tutoring.

What can I do next?

Contact colleges. I know UTSA has a mentoring program for certain area schools and most colleges with educator programs will have some kind of help and cost shoud be minimal.

I have a relative and co-worker who have both had children in the Winston School. They might be able to help find a tutor for your son.

Good Morning E., You can try the universities sometimes the students that are studying to be teachers or in that field may want to do extra work, they might not be so expensive. I hope this helps you a little.

Good for you for doing everything you can to make sure your son is succesful! If your son was officially diagnosed with dyslexia, then there should be paperwork with accomodations that he gets. Tutoring, extra time, etc. could be some of the things listed in the paperwork. If not, ask for a meeting to discuss his accomodations. I know that with dyslexic students, extra time is a huge MUST. If the subject is reading, maybe he doesn't need tutoring, maybe he needs more of the dyslexic program/support that your district provides. If the subject is something other than reading, is it the subject that he is struggling with or is it the reading of the material? If that is the case, accomodations can be made as well. Good Luck!

Is your son in special education? If not, you need to contact the counselor/principal of the school and demand a complete battery of tests, which will be paid by the school system.

Get a copy of the Student Rights booklet published by your school system for additional suggestions. Also, contact the Texas Education Association office in Austin and ask them for assistance from someone in the disabilities office.

Best of luck.

Good Morning Mam,
I completely understand. I too looking into Sylvin and did the assesment test but when it was time to schedualing his tutoring I couldn't beleive to know what it would cost. My try look into an acadamy school they have good teachers and they don't have as many kids in class as the public schools I really like the school for my son. Now we have to take him to school and then he rides the Via bus home. You might try looking into an acadamy. I have seen a commercial of another school like sylvin. I will watch for the commercial and will get back w/the information. Don't give up there is help.

I am sorry to hear about the schools lack of help. My oldest it in 4th and I have never had this problem so I can't recomend anywhere or anyplace - but I do have an idea. If you feel comdortable with it you may want to advertise a request on Craigslist.com. If you do a search for tutor you may even find somebody. On your request you can be specific for what your looking for - experience, degree, age range, and the desired amount you wish to spend or ask for them to email you with thier rates. You may or may not need a specialist. If not maybe a seasond college student in the special needs field would be approprate and probably alot cheaper. Keep in mind this is a public site with minimal monitoring - be very cautious of who you choose and treat it just like you are hiring a nanny almost. Background check maybe, check referneces, addresses, check registered child offender site, copy of DL, bill with proof of address...hings of that nature. Then proceed to interview them in a public place with you only. Next if you feel it is a good fit interview them with your child. I have found tons of things on CL from many great people. basicly it is people helping people! I love it. Good luck!

depending on the district's state scoring they may be required to offer you options for tutoring, I know with Edgewood district at the beginning of the year they were mandated by the state to inform parents of poor scores in certain areas for 3 consecutive years, and offer parents and students of options for tutoring, or transfering to new schools.
