I'm Pregnant and Need Something to Drink Other than Water

Ok...I've cut out coffee, soda, and most of the time, my ice tea. I LOVE OJ, but it makes me sick to my stomach, so I guess that one's out until November. Any ideas on something else I can drink? I don't like other sodas or anything with a fizz. I just had hubby stop and get some Sunny D and Hawaiian Punch today...the Sunny D isn't much better than my OJ...not feeling so well...afraid the Hawaiian Punch is going to have too much sugar as well...I like my water and adding lemon helps...just looking for other options.

What can I do next?

What about fizzy flavored water? I know Kroger carries them I think they're by Schwepps. There's nothing else but flavor and carbonated water, no sugar or additives. I personally like the raspberry and the lemon-lime.

Minute Maid has some new juices in the refrigerated section. I buy the pomegranite blueberry. They are good. They even have some pomegranite teas/lemonades.

I love mixing water with juices. My daily drink is 1/3 of apple juice and 2/3 of water. I also really like to add some cranberry juice to that mix.
Hope this helps!

Hi J.,
Congratulations to you on your expecting baby.
You know, there are many sodas our there that are caffeine free....Fantas, Sprites, 7UP, and I'm sure more that I can't think of....
I usually had about 2 Fantas a day or sprites....mainly for a dinner or lunch meal.
Sunny D was one of my favorites UNTIL getting pregnant. Too tangy for my pregnant hormones. : )
Tree Top apple juice is one of my favorites, it doesn't seem as sweet as the others.
Do you like the flavored waters? I'm not much for them but good old water was actually my fav during pregnancies.
I craved it like crazy and you'll probably start getting that way too.
Good luck to you!

How about apple juice or lemonade, sprite and other non-carb drinks? It's so hard especially if you're use to having coke and coffee. I'm nursing, and I'm still missing my coke and coffee kicks. Also, you should probably stay away from red drinks, like hawaiin punch b'c of the red dye #40. I read that somewhere but can't remember my source.

Since you like tea you could drink Red Raspberry Tea.(it is great as iced tea) It is good for your uterus. I drank it throughout both my pregnancies. You can get loose tea leaves or tea bags at most health stores. (Yogi or Traditional Medicinals Tea are the brands I used)
I ordered mine online at www.vitacost.com.
Best to get organic to avoid pesticides.

It also helps those with PMS.

Ginger Ale. Aside from tasting great, it is not on the bad list and helps to settle your stomach.

When I was pregnant I could not water, acidic drinks like OJ, Apple Juice or anything with Red Dye in it (dont ask me why).

I was able to drink soda only 2 - 3 a day only. OBGYN said it was okay because I needed the caffine to keep my migranes away and my body was not reacting well to going cold turky...I am addicted to sodas!

I had Morning Sickness gone wrong so I was only able to eat certin foods and drinks. To deal with not being able to take my Mulit Vitamins I drank ENSURE! Several a day...i was able to hold it down.

I also had major cravings for Slushies/Blended Fruit drinks and shakes.

Stay away from anything with Acid!

I love sugar free Kool-Aid, but I am not sure if they use Splenda or what the sweetener is (you may have to investigate if you are interested). When I was preggo I loved chocolate milk, I could not get enough. I was drinking a 1/2 a gallon a day, yikes!

I drank a ton of chocolate milk. And this may sound strange, but at about 5 months I started craving beer. I wanted a cold, frosty, ice-floating-on-top in a glass mug, beer...so I drank O'douls with lime. (O'douls is a non-alcoholic beer.) I had a couple a day until about the last month when the craving suddenly vanished. You might also try Crystal Light lemonade or hot teas. The hot teas help with the gas pains also. My favorites were raspberry white tea and chamomile honey tea. I also had a coke every other day or so.

Congratulations and good luck!

Hello J.,

how about some herbal teas like mint, ginger <--if blood pressure issues, keep it to a minimum.

aniseed & star anise (licorish flavor-- but it's not licorish)
go to sprouts or a wholefoods and find naturally caffeine free teas. you can make ice tea w/ them too.

avoid artificial sugars and high fructose corn syrup.
if you're missing the coffee... they have a caffeine free coffee. I think it's made from chickory root. I've seen it at sprouts and wholefoods. see if you find one made from garbanzo beans ...I had it many years ago and it was delicious. but if you're like me, you might not want "alternative" coffees.... =)
good luck and keep experimenting. you can make your own juices too. Good luck and hang in there. ~C.~

I was addicted to iced tea before I got pregnant, and since I was pregnant, and now breastfeeding, I use the decaf tea bags. The tea tastes the same, and I just put 1/2 the sugar that I used to. It is SO refreshing when that urge for something cold hits you!
Congrats on the new addition!
Good luck and stick in there!

I continued to drink my 2 diet cokes each day with both pregnancies. (with doc approval) I couldnt give them up! My favorite drink other than that while pregnant is the hawaiian punch- strawberry lemonade. It is very good and I still love it today. (So do my kids) Its not as sweet and heavy as the regular HP. Good Luck and congratulations!

I was in the hospital for 3 weeks before my daughter was born, while in the hospital one of the nurses got me on Cran-Apple Juice. WalMart carries a Great Value brand and I think Ocean Spray does too! Oh, and Ginger Ale was good...that helped my morning/all day sickness.

A little tea here and there will not hurt your baby. I craved lemonade like mad when I was pregnant. Crystal light is a good option. But, i'm not one of those that buys into all the hype. I say eat and drink what you crave-- so long as it isn't beer and washing detergent-- LOL.

I'm mixing the new V8 Fusion Tropical Orange with sparkling water to cut the calories. It's the one with your fruits and veggies and tastes really good. I love orange juice, too, but can't drink it right now because of nausea. This is a great, cold drink in the morning that can get your bowels moving, too, just like coffee would for most people but I'm trying to avoid that now that I got addicted to McDonald's coffee right before we got pregnant with twins!

When I was pregnant I drank alot of water with lemon. I also drank de-caffeinated tea alot, which is full of antioxidants. I also occationally had de-caf coffee which my dr. said was fine. I would try to stay away from really sugary drinks like sunny-D and Tang. Sunny D is only 5% juice! Apple juice is good, if the Oj is making you sick I would try the low acidity Oj- its MUCH easier on the tummy(try adding ice if the juice it too much)! I also really enjoyed making my own smoothies, you can add just about any fruit under the sun and blend with ice and juice. My favorite was banana, pineapple with a slash of apple juice and yogurt- yum! I would also try to stay away from anything that has aspartame in it (artificial sweetner) I just don't trust anything chemical like that for baby. Well good luck I hope you find this helpful! Get creative I know the H20 gets old really quick!!

I lived on Apple Juice slushes from Sonic when I was pregnant with my last child. I normally don't like apple juice, but something about it being in slush form made it perfect. If you decide to try it, make sure you are clear that you want the apple juice one, not the green apple one. FYI: They are half price from 2-4pm.

Why don't you try decaf iced tea or does that also bother you? Or, how about some sparkling mineral water (lemon or lime flavored)? Those are my two drinks other than water. And they're far, far better for you and baby than Sunny D or Hawaiian punch since you don't need all that sugar or artificial colors. Or you could at least mix those with sparkling water (or plain club soda) to cut down the sugar and still have the flavor you're craving.

This is my favorite punch recipe!
Got me through some rough days when all I wanted was a giant vanilla Dr. Pepper from Sonic or Starbucks!

It makes a lot and sometimes I'd add red food coloring for fun.

1 large can pineapple juice
3 qts water
3 T almond flavoring
2 c sugar
1 c lemon juice

mix.

add 1 liter ginger ale before serving.

I don't think this has any fizz at all because the ginger ale is so diluted.

(oh, and try different Sonic drinks. Ocean water, apple cherry slush, diet Cherry Limeades, Sonic sunrise is awesome! - ask them for recommendations too)

Good luck girl - I am STILL in this boat because I am nursing. It's all worth it though, I know!
