My son had tubes when he was 10months. He had ear infections all the time. He is now 12 years old. He has only had 1 ear infection since the tubes. They were great. He didn't have much pain when he got them done and they did wonders for him.
My daughther has had multiple double ear infections and her pedi says one more and she will be referred to an ENT for tubes. Im really scared about this b/c it is surgery no matter how you look at it. Please give me some advice on this! My little girl is almost 14 months old.
Victoria had her tubes put in today, for the most part it was a really easy surgery..it was hard seeing her coming off the meds. Thanks everyone for your advice/experience stories.

Both mine have had tubes. My oldest at 15 months and the younger one at 9 months. They both were acting like nothing happened by the time we got home. In fact with my youngest, I went to lunch with him and my mom that afternoon. It is amazing to see their faces though as they hear so much better and sounds are so much louder. After the tubes - no ear infections. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has had multiple infections.
I felt the same way as you do. My 13 month old got tubes last month and it was the easiest thing ever. The hardest thing was waking her up earlly to go to the surgery center.. Dr. Greg Rohn, Presby. Plano, did the surgery - only used gas and didn't have to use a tube or put her heavily under. From the time she left to the time the doctor came in was only 10 minutes - amazing. Went home, ate breakfast, long nap and was totally fine. AND, now she is jabbering - she can hear - couldn't before. Make an appointment now with Dr. Rohn - he will put your mind at ease.
2 of my 3 children have had cronic ear infections. Poor babies they were so miserable, we were in the Dr office all the time. The antibiotics weren't strong enough for the infection but then they had tummy issues and subsequent horrendous diaper rash from them. The surgeries for us were absolutely worth it. The kids were having speech delays because they couldn't hear through the fluid in thier ears. Speech improved within 2 weeks. The only negative drawback for me is that the kids can "rage" when coming out of anesthesia. Just be prepared emotionaly for it ahead of time. The surgery was very quick maybe 10 minutes and there was basically no recovery time at home. Ask around about an ENT that others have used. This is a common issue and you'll find plently of Moms
who've been through it.
From the time my daughter was 4 months until one year she had constant ear infections, sometimes double. The doctor said after she turned one year she would need tubes. The day of the surgery was ok. I am a single mom and we were alone that day. They took her from me early in the morning and a few hours later they brought her back. She was very very groggy and was having a hard time waking up. They said that was ok, not to be worried, that it was the aenestetic wearing off. That her mind was waking up before her body was. She cried alot. They said she wasnt in pain, just confused. I guess that would be scary for a baby. Anyways, I tried to console her, but she just wasnt awake enough to know I was there. After about 45 minutes, she was fine, and we went home a couple of hours later. After that, we went back in one month for a check up and the TUBES HAD FALLEN OUT!! The doctor said lets wait and see what happens. AND, SHE NEVER HAD ANOTHER EAR INFECTION AGAIN!
My middle son got them last summer and I was very worried (he was about 18 months old). We had to wake him early to go to the surgery center, we were home by 10am and he was perfectly happy and normal after his nap. He still gets ear infections but nothing bad and you know when he has one due to drainage so you can start meds right away. It has certainly helped. With all the ear infections he had his hearing was muffled which delayed his speech a bit, I think. If you do go to an ENT I highly recommend Dr. Mehendelay (sp?) at Centennial Hospital.....great dr and felt very comfortable with him. Good Luck
My son has had two sets of tubes. His first set was when he was 9 months old. I was very nervous like you. But the whole ordeal was very simple. The hardest part was letting the nurse take him back for surgery. The longest part was the wait before. The entire procedure took maybe 15 minutes. By the time we made it to the waiting room once they took him back, we maybe sat down for 5, maybe 10 minutes and he was done. He slept the rest of the day once we got him home and was back to normal the next day.
It was awesome! No more ear infections. They fell out eventually but we didn't even know it. By that time she'd grown out of the ear infections. It was totally worth it.
My 14 month old daughter got tubes put in 2 weeks ago. I was really scared about it until a friends little boy had them put in I saw him a few hours later and he was smiling so I decided to get my babys ears done. And she took a couple hour nap and was in a good mood when she got up. I also noticed her talking alot more over the past couple of weeks. I did just take her for her post op and she has an infection in her right ear but the great thing is she now gets antibiotic ear drops instead of regular antibiotics which she became allergic to. It wasnt scary at all but I was still nervous. Good luck
so easy and well worth it. my son's surgery was literally 10 minutes.

The best decision I ever made for my son. He was a twin. Sick all the time with ear pain, colds etc. Woke up after 3 hours of sleep 4 out of 7 nights a week. I saw Dr. Mehendale (ENT in Frisco).
It was fast surgery. 10 minutes and when we got home he was playing with his sister. His health has been great since. He even skips the common cold if we get sick. At the time of surgery he was 16 months.
My little one had tubes in her ears done in November 2009, she had just turned 2 and honestly it was a piece of cake. I was scared too, but once I talked to a few more parents I realized that I was getting more worked up than I should. We arrived at the hospital, checked in, waited for a few min and then was taken back to the OR. They gave her some pink stuff that made her loopy and to be honest I have never laughed so hard in my life. Someone would talk to her and she would just stare at them and then start laughing. They took her back to start the surgery and by the time I picked up the phone to call my friends to tell them she was in the OR the doctor came back and said ok we're all done. It was literally 10 min. Your little one will be fine God willing.
It was really scary when my pediatrician told me that my baby girl (at 18 months old) had to see an ENT. They tested her hearing and that is when I saw first-hand how much fluid she was retaining in her ears because she really could not hear everything they were doing! It was totally shocking! They ENT doctor saw her and immediately recommended tubes. I was a bit shaken, but after seeing the hearing results I knew it was best for her. The word 'surgery' is pretty scary, but the actual procedure was less than 5 minutes. The ENT did not even use an I.V. In my case, as well as the dozen other people I have talked to that had tubes put in their kiddos' ears, the procedure was quick and it was the best decision they could have made for their babies. My baby girl has had them for more than 7 months now and she has had several colds - but only 1 ear infection. The only way we knew about the infection was that the fluid can now leak out of her ear (because of the tube that relieves the pressure). I was very happy that she did not suffer with this one like she had in the past.
Go for it. Personally, it was the best decision for my baby girl. Best of luck to you. I hope your little one gets better soon!
I had 2 of my 4 children get t-tubes in their ears and It was quite easy other than not getting water in them we used wax ear plugs in summer when we went to the pool.
since we did we have noticed a big difference in both of their volume when talking and has stopped the ear infections
And they didn"t act as if it really hurt them to much after the surgery.
hope this helps

My son had chronic ear infections. No sooner than we would get one cleared up he'd get another one. We finally went to the ENT when he was 13 months old, of course the ENT recommended tubes. We did the surgery and haven't had an ear infection since. He will be 3 next month. We know for sure that one of the tubes has fallen out and the other was loose, that was 6 months ago at his last doctor appointment. But even in the ear with the missing tube we haven't had any issues.
Yes, it is surgery. It's a really fast procedure. The nurse and ENT came and got my son at 7am on the dot and I was by his side by 7:15am when he was waking up. That was the tough part, he wasn't happy with the groggy feeling. He pretty much slept away that day and night, no trouble after that.
If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't hesitate.
My daughter had them put in at 22 months because she never acted as she was in pain so I never knew when she was having them. I was so scared. We arrived at the hospital and got taken back to pre op. we put her in a child hospital gown and verified info. They gave her some medicine where she was so loopy. She was happy to go so there was no seperation meltdown. We were able to leave pre op to go to the waiting room, sit down, pick up a newspaper, and look up to see the doctor telling us he was done and it went great. It took longer for her to leave recovery than it did for the surgery. And she has never had another ear infection. For us it was well worth the stress.
It's not really a big deal. The ENT's are great. The ear infections clear up and the child stops being as sick. Get it scheduled as early in the day as possible because there is no eating or drinking for 12 hours before. After the surgery they recover quickly, like withing 24 hours.
Easy surgery, Easiest recumperation. With in 6 hrs he was totally back to normal. and No more ear infections.
the hardest part was when they brung him to back to me still really groggy and limp from anestheia and cried really hard. Then drank his juice and was fine.
DO IT! It was easy and it helps so much!
We had tubes put in my sons ears about the same age and it was the best decision we could've made! Ear infections were finally over! It's a pretty quick surgery. It was a little rough when he was waking up from the surgery, but other than that, it was a breeze. After the tubes are in you have to be careful not to get water in their ears but that's not hard to do. We still poured wated over his head at bathtime, etc and it was never a problem. In the summer he wore earplugs for swimming type activies. We used Dr. Roger Skiles in Frisco, an ENT, and he was FABULOUS!!!
Our daughter had tubes at 10.5 months last year. We expected she'd be down for a few days. She was down for a few hours and bounced back immediately. The ENT should go through all of this with you when you have your consultation.
It is surgery. It's a very routine surgery, and the hardest part, by far, was her screaming as they took her into the OR.
Surgery is surgery. But is it worth the continued ear infections, misery and possible loss of hearing if you don't have it?
My daughter had tubes put in her ears at 13months....since it was surgery, it was scary knowing your child will be going into surgery. When she came out of surgery, she looked so peaceful because she was still asleep. She woke up about 15minutes later, and she was already wanting to get up and play. Kids bounce back faster than adults. The doctor gave us some drops to put in her ear to avoid any ear infection. The tubes usually stay in the ear for a year to a year in a half. The doctor had told me that if the tubes dont fall out on their own within a year to a year and a half then the doctor may remove them herself. In my daughters case, they never fell out on their own, so the doc kept checking her every 6months or so to keep an eye on it. The doctor finally took them out when my daughter was about 27 months. She did it right there in the office, the child didnt feel a thing. The whole time the tubes were in the ear, she never once had another ear infection. The hardest part was not getting water in the ears while washing her hair. To this day, my daughter fights me when washing her hair, because she is so use to me not getting water in her ears. She is now 3yrs old and knock on wood she is still doing very well.
My son had them a yr and a half ago. He was 2. It was super easy. No crying or anything. When we got home from the surgery he played in the front yard and then took a very long nap. We went out to dinner that night and he's been fine ever since. Not one ear infection.
