mom has verbally said no presents are necessary, i asked if could get something small, just a token and she said yes. I'd like some ideas on things under $5 that wouldnt just be clutter. They shop heavily at the dollar store so i know if there was anything cute there they would have already boughten it. Any ideas for a 6 year old girl??
Thanks for the great ideas. I think i'm going to go with either $5 in McMoney or a Magic Tree house book and copy a Cd of other Magic Tree house audio books that we got in Wendy's meals a year ago that my kids still love. I love the idea of the window makers too, since it was really orginal. Sounds like i'm missing out not living where there is a 5 below.
Normally, i would respect the no presents, but I know this situation and an small present really is ok. And i asked permission first, too. Just to put anyones worries to rest.
THanks momma's for the fun ideas. I'm off to polish my own toes now:)

My daughter will be 6 in a few weeks & she would be delighted with nail polish, lip gloss/chapstick, a cool new toothbrush (Hannah Montana or HSM), hair scrunchies, a $5 gift card to Claire's, McDonalds's, Justice or anywhere she could buy something herself, cool pens or pencils, Hannah Montana or HSM socks or a book that she could read herself. Happy shopping!

I didn't read all the other requests..so I apologize if I'm repeating anything. How about a five dollar gift certificate to borders bookstore or even WAWA. My friends son loves it when he gets giftcards because he feels very important and confident paying for things on his own...plus he gets what he choses too.

Target has a great dollar section. they are usually in the front when you come in the store. the newer the target the better selection they have. there are so many different things you will see something you will think is cute for her. most girls at that age like to polish their nails or play dress up or some kind of lipstick. flavored lip glosses are nice also. target always has something cute.

My daughter is 6. She loves all the "funky" markers & pencils (& paints too), you could get something like that with a half sheet size tablet for doodling (I know they have them at target with the crayola stuff, didn't know where else).
A beginning to read book is also a great idea.

A book is a great idea. There are great books for under $5 at Wal-mart for girls, like Princesses or Dora. Not too big or too long, perfect for beginner readers.

Right now, Walmart is selling the Dr. Suess books for $4.88 each. They typically run $12.95 or more. I think books are a nice gift and don't clutter as much as toys. OR, you could get her a shirt, dress or PJs. Hope this helps.

How about some sort of art supplies? Can be done cheaply and doesn't end up as clutter since it is stuff they actually use and run out of, at least at my house!

How about something artsy/crafty from AC Moore/Michaels. You can use a 40% off coupon and they have a lot of kits and things that she could paint or color.
A gift that you make yourself is always appreciated. Maybe your daughter can make her a birthday card. :)

Hi K.,
I think books are always a great gift! My kids, especially my daughter(who will be 5 in July)currently loves the Berenstein Bears books--they are such great stories & there is always a lesson to learn too. But there are so many characters out there that the girls love---Tinkerbell, Dora, My Little Pony---and there are stories about all of them :) I know that you can get them at Wal-Mart or Target for $3.50-$3.99.
Good luck!
**ha ha...I just saw the responses below & books have already been suggested.....so I am seconding that suggestion!

Hi,
My child is 6 and I know right now he loves getting gift certificates. I tell people to get them for barnes and noble so he can pick out a book or target/walmart so he can get himself a toy. There is also that 5 below store that everything is under $5 and some of the stuff is really cute. maybe a journal?

Not sure what stores are near you, but I have gotten gifts from Five Below. They have a great variety. I've also done gift cards too for our nieces n nephews ages 5 n up to game stores, book stores. When I don't get any ideas from child or parent I do gc to Walmart or Target so thay can pick something.
Does she like arts/crafts?
If your child likes crafts too you could make a day out of it and take them both to the store to get something.
If not look into gift card or something like a beading kit, small scrapbboking kit, etc. Something like that.
Good Luck!

I would say a gift card, or nothing. Have you considered that the mom really doesn't want any gifts? Sometimes people really don't want them. They may not want the clutter or they may want to teach their kids that company & well wishes are more important than material gifts. Or maybe they don't have much money to spend themselves and they are embarrased when others can do more than they themselves can. I don't know the situation here, but I know it bothers me when people bring gifts, no matter how small, when I specifically said no.
If you choose a gift card, choose a place where they can buy something nice for the amount you give. It can go unused if they can't afford to pay the balance towards the purchase.

I have to 2nd the 5-one dollar bills suggestion. My step-daughter is 6 and even though she is starting to know better, she still gets exponentially more excited about 5 bills (even ones) than she does about a single ten or even twenty dollar bill. It just seems like so much more money to her. Plus, then the child will have a fun time picking out something special to buy and it will be what she really wanted. It’s like a present twice--- once when she opens the card and once when she goes to the store. And if they shop at the dollar store, just think how much stuff $5 would buy! Or her parents may choose to use it as a lesson on spending and saving and let her spend $1 and put $4 in the bank.
My close 2nd choice would be a special book. One with a meaningful story that will make the child think of your family every time she reads it. I love “Zen Shorts” by Jon J Muth. It’s really special.
PS—I just read the response about: if you buy a gift card make sure that it’s somewhere that the card will cover the whole amount of the purchase. I HIGHLY agree. A gift card where the parents have to pay a remaining balance on the purchase is the opposite of a gift. It’s not like a 6 year old will be patient and wait until they receive more money/gift cards to cover the full purchase the way an adult could.

I'm always a fan of the craft. You can get simple craft projects at Michael’s and in the craft department at Wal-mart. They have several for under $5.00.
How about a gift card or "coupons" to a fast food place. My sister always buy my kids the McDonald's Valentines/Halloween coupons, and they are a HUGE hit! And they finally have healthier options for some of them ~ milk/juice instead of a soda & apple dippers OR fries! :) So you don't necessarily have to have junk! ;) Also, if she's more of a "girly" girl and her mom doesn't mind, maybe a bottle of pale colored nail polish & a small bottle of remover, along with toe separators, an emery board & a cheap bag of cotton balls or q-tips. :)

Try looking at AC Moore, or Michaels - they have great price, and an arts and craft item is something the child can actually do - not just have laying around as clutter. I always go that route when I'm unsure, or haven't been given a specific idea.

You can even buy gift cards for some dollar stores.

I love to encourage imagination for kids. So one thought is dress-up items. You can scour your closet or jewelry box for items you never wear but would add some sparkle to a little girl's fun. If you aren't the type to keep those things around, try a second hand store. You can probably find a few beaded necklaces, hankies, scarves or maybe even a cool hat (if you're lucky) in your price range.

There's allot of $5 gifts these days in the Barbie line, any of the dolls/figures. I buy my daughter little Pucci dogs that come with a leash and tiny bag to carry them in. The new Thumbelina line has small dolls there.
This is my favorite...especially with spring/summer just around the corner. Get a sand bucket and fill it with a pack of chalk, jumprope, bubbles...the "typical" outdoor things...then mom is set for next nice day and children love the "multiple" items.
