My 3 1/2 year old son was invited to 2 birthday parties of classmates 2 days in a row. I am looking for gift suggestions and how much to spend. One party is for a boy and the other is for a girl. Both will be 5.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your suggestions. We went to Target and he picked out some Legos for the boy, a Camp Rock beach towel for the girl, and then a book for each of them and of course, a new one for himself too. He was very pleased with his picks. We rounded out our morning redeeming his free pizza from Pizza Hut for Book It! It was a nice time. When we got home, he signed the cards himself and helped me wrap the gifts too. He was very proud.

We usually spend between $10 and $15 per present. For a five year old, you can't go wrong with art supplies. We love to get the Crayola Color Wonder or Color Explosion gift sets.

Generally I spend about $15 for a child that age. However, if you can find something that looks like a lot more but you've only spent $10.00 - that's a great find! I've done the beach towel/goggles/chalk present before, as your previous post suggested. The Disney Store has wonderful sales before summer. Also fun t-shirts and crafty kits (i.e. things to color/crayons, paints, beads etc...) are fun. For a boy - some kind of car or legos kit if he loves putting together those models, are a great gift. Buying a music cd or just giving a target gift card can be a great present.

Good luck.

I also spend about $15, and based on my 4 year old's recent party, that seems pretty typical. I like to give a board game, or a craft project item (try Joanne). Two of my daughter's favorite gifts were Benderoos and Dot markers. The disney store has a good selection of reasonably priced gifts too. Right now outdoor toys are a good idea too. Do you know the kids' parents? I was surprised at how many moms asked me what my daughter wanted when they rsvp'd. If you're comfortable with the parents, you could just ask if there's anything in particular that the kids are "into".

I also spend $15 for a gift (more if it's a special friend they are close to).

Gifts are easy, just go to the toy department at Walmart (or any other store). Moonsand, board games, costumes, Webkinz, Legos...as long as you include the gift receipt, you'll be fine.

Hi C.,
We usually spend $10-15 (more for the "best" friends). A few ideas that came to mind...Art supplies (chalk, coloring books, stickers, foam shapes, colored paper) are fun on rainy or hot days. Sprinklers to play in the yard (they make all kinds these days), goggles, beach towels, flip-flops, buckets, racks, bug-catchers, flashlights, bubbles & bubble kits. Sparkle nail polish, lip-gloss, hair things, match box cars, kick balls (ours always seem to be flat), plastic bases for a game. Well, these are just a few. I hope you find some of them helpful!

Make-your-own-storybook kits are great, and unisex, and cultivate love of books...

you can get a few different kinds at Target and such places, but near the scrapbooking/arts&crafts section, not hte toy section. This has been our gift of choice forthe last dozen 5-year old bdays. They are usu. between $12-20.

I am really big on outside toys this time of the year. There is a stomp rocket by Air Hogs (Target) that is lots of fun. There are also big frisbees, bubbles, sand buckets, and lots of other fun things.

During the winter, I might get a lego kit, some crayola stuff or a board game. Floor puzzles are good too.

Spring is coming so get them a bubble kit, bug catcher, or chalk set. I wouldn't spend much because I personally think the birthday party thing gets way out of hand. I never knew anyone outside one aunt that gave their kids birthday parties every year. I think it is pretty over-indulgent, but that's my opinion. Nothing worse than a grown adult pouting because everyone didn't make a big ta-do about their birthday.

Get them a little something fun, but don't fret too much about it.

I always do $15-20 for a gift, I have found that to be the norm. Whenever I RSVP for the party, I always ask the parent what the child likes, any special character or anything. I think at this age for a girl, most like the princesses, I don't think that you can go wrong with some sort of play car or truck for a boy.

My girl is turning five in a few weeks and she loves these things:
Perler beads (you know, those beads you put on peg boards, then iron them together so they stick?) You can find those at any craft store like Michael's
Anything with Thumbelina, Tinkerbell, My Little Pony, etc. Five year old girls love sparkly things.
Barbie
Polly Pockets
Sparkly hair things like headbands, bracelets, rings, etc.

I'm clueless about boys. :)

For kid parties I think $15-20 tops. You will find most gifts are in that range. I usually try to find something unique maybe something from a learning store. Good Luck!

I have found that throwing together gift bag/s baskets is always a hit. no matter the age. At preschool age you could do a basket that has stuff like a mug some hot chocolate, popcorn and a video or card games or activity books with crayons or markers. you can get all of it at the target or the dollar store. I don't recommend dollar stores for biggie stuff but things like coloring books/activity books, card games, mugs etc the dollar stores are a great deal. also all the wrapping stuff. and you can do girl or boy.

We usually spend $15 to $20 for books, board games, lego kits, art supplies. Girls love these inexpensive stick on earrings Claire's sells, so you could do a book and earrings or something like that to keep costs down but give a great gift. All the boys I know at that age love Star Wars, so I'll get a Lego Bionicle kit for them to build. They have them at Target.

2 words for you: Gift Card! Most kids have more than enough toys and books, plus you never know if you're duplicating. A gift card may seem impersonal, but it's probably your best bet in this situation.

How about a cool beach towel and swim goggles? I usually spend $15.00 on a classmate b-day party.
