We are going to a birthday party next week and I have no idea what to get the birthday girl. She will be turning 5. Do any of you have any good gift ideas? My daughter is only 15 months old I don't know "old kid" stuff yet :-) Thanks!

What can I do next?

I like gift certs for art class, things like jump ropes and hula hoopes, or toys with gears that have lots of cause and effects. The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)has some very cool stuff. I love the chair balancing game, plan to get that for my 5 yo sometime. Or etsy.com for something hand made is great, you can even find some one making cool things local. I try to stay away from anything made in China.
Happy shopping, A. H

A unique idea is a raincoat and\or rainboots. I got a set for a kids birthday recently (http://babymacdesigns.com/chra.html) and it was the hit of the party!

Books, books, books. Always a good idea no matter how old the child is. Maybe a "grown-up" alphabet book such as "Animalia". The "Frances" books by Hoban are fun for little girls and they always have a lesson. My nieces and nephews have already learned that "Aunt N. always gives books" for Christmas and birthdays.

Good morning J., I usually do a small purse that is filled with hair ties, barrettes, lip gloss (the chapstick type), etc. I have found that all ages of people get excited when they have multiple things in a container. Baby showers, I do all of the little things in a basket, the same for wedding showers. Hope this helps, L. S.

I have a 4 1/2 y.o. daughter and right now all she wants to do is be in the pool. Pool toys, swimsuits, etc. would be a good choice but also other outdoor stuff like sunglasses, a slip and slide or a sprinkler would be a fun gift, too. You could also consider some rainy day activities, games or toys - a really fun game that my daughter likes is called Hullabaloo (not sure on tne spelling) it's a game by Cranium. Or just a collection of arts and crafts supplies is ALWAYS appreciated!

I really believe 5 year olds love princess stuff. I know my niece loves anything that has to do with any disney princess. A good book along with it is great for this age because reading is so important. Good Luck.

How about a gift card to Build-a-Bear? Rather than giving her a toy, this can be a fun experience that she will have to look back on. You can even purchase an outfit for her in advance to put on the bear when she makes it.

For my 2 nieces this last Christmas (one is 7 & the other is 5), I bought them each a Webkinz. There are a ton of different animals you can get. The website that they use them at is pretty controlled, they can send messages to their friends, but it's pre-typed and they can just click on them. Plus, it's a small enough stuffed animal that they can just carry it around with them if they want to. I would find out if she's into anything particular, like both of my nieces like horses, so that's what I bought for them and they both were ecstatic!
have fun!

My daughter is 4.5 and she loves to do arts and crafts with that foam craft stuff from Michaels or JoAnn's. She also loves doodling with markers, crayons, etc.

Toy wise she loves Polly Pockets, and the Disney Princesses. However, if the mom has other small ones in the house Polly Pockets may not be the best idea.

Hope this helps.

We used to buy cute little picture albums with a disposable camera for my daughter's friends at that age. Kohls sells really cute albums (or at least they used to). This gift was always a huge hit. Good luck to you and have a great time.

anything princessey... Costume jewelry and dress up clothes... Just a warning... If someone gave my kid any make up, i'd throw it away... Ask the parents first before giving something like that... Maybe ask them what she's into...
If you go with clothes avoid 2 piece swim suits and include the tags so they can be exchanged if the sizes arn't quite right...
At 5 my daughter was really into polly pockets... There are small pieces, so if there are younger siblings it would be best to avoid them...

My four year olds best friend is a girl. We got her a butterfly hooded towel from Pottery Barn (with her name on it). Another idea is pjs. Kids seem to get sooooo many toys. I don't allow too many themed clothes, but instead let me son pick out themed pjs. The disney store has cute pjs-- but you can get many of the same or similar at other stores as well.

The best bet is to get a hold of the mom and ask her what her daughter likes. Depending on what she likes, the gifts could vary from a favorite character to a new bike helmet. If you can't get a hold of mom, I would venture to say that arts and crafts are always a good bet...that's what I do!

5 Year Old Girls are fun to shop for! Here are a few ideas (my daughter turns 5 in September, and we have been to MANY 5 yr. old parties):

1) Games: Uno, Sorry, Sequence (junior)

2) Crafts: But a small organizer and fill it with 'crafty' items. Target has their back to school stuff out (UGH) and I got some great deals. We put scissors, glue, and new markers in the organizer with tons of smaller items (pom poms, stickers, foam stickers, pipe cleaners, beads, etc). I added a new package of construction paper, and Voila!

3) Puppets (a few to make a puppet show)

4) Books: maybe some to read together: Pinkalicious, Purpilicious, Fairy Tales, Fancy Nancy
or, some she can begin to try on her own when she's ready: Little Bear, Biscuit, Frog and Toad

5) A purse: my daughter received a small one from Grandma. She keeps her library card in it, as well as a little money from Grandma (3-5 dollars). When we go out, she feels so grown up!

Good Luck!

At Michaels (or I am sure any craft store) they have inexpensive unfinished wooded boxes. Many have clasps, so my 4 year old calls them treasure chests. What about one of those with some (washable) paint, rhinesotnes (Dollar store?) and other things to deocrate her own treasure chest? You could even put a few small treauses in it if you like (bracelets, necklaces, tattoos, crayons, arts and crafts stuff - always a hit with my son, or whatever). Or, drop the parents a line. I am sure they could help out :) 5 years old is also a good Lego's age, or big floor puzzles (Target has some or Toys R Us). Then she has something to use over and over again. Have fun!!!

Hi~ Didn't read your other responses, but my daughters can't get enough of polly pockets and barbies. Also, a Webkins stuffed animal may be a good idea, or things like washable markers, or 'cool' sparkly crayons;anything artsy. And depending on the parents' opinion, some sort of clear lip gloss or chap stick -type lip stuff- (my daughter is practically obsessed with the stuff : - )

My daughter just turned five and these were some of her favortie presents. Anything with Ariel, disney princesses, dolls, dress up. Also, a Style Head- barbie or princess that you can brush her hair and "style" it. Moon Sand, other crafts - beads, coloring (princess or fairies). Outdoor play stuff like jump ropes, balls, swimming stuff - ariel goggles, towels, suits, etc. If the birthday girl is a into girly stuff, you can't go wrong with anything princess or dress up!

Well if she is a girly girl, and you don't know what she is into. Some sort of dress up kit. You can go to walmart or even the dollar store has stuff. Like brushes hair ties, tinted chapstick, fake jewelry, or some stores even have dress like princess kits. These go over usually bigger then the stuff they actually ask for. Hope this helps.

Personally, I would stay away from Webkinz, Barbie and Bratz unless you know for sure her parents allow her to have them. I have a daughter who will be 5 in October and we do not allow her on the computer (so the webkinz is just an expensive stuffed animal), we haven't introduced her to Barbie yet (the ones she's gotten have been put up for later) and I will not allow Bratz toys in the home.

I would definitely recommend arts and crafts supplies. My daughter can't get enough of them. We purchased ceramic magnet kits from JoAnn's that she painted and then gave to her teachers for graduation. She recently received a foam book and stickers to make her own scrapbook and a kit to make pompom animals. All of these were well received. I bought little "camp" kits at Joannes for $1 each recently for a camping trip. Each had all the supplies needed for the project and many of them were Disney Fairies. You really can't go wrong with crafty things.

Anything Princess, Hannah Montana or baby doll related is also a huge hit.

We're kind of in a similar situation as she's invited to a boys birthday party on Saturday. I emailed his mother to find out if there were specific things he'd like, general themes he's into or if there was anything she'd like him not to have.

These ideas are generally great, but you might want to drop a line to the mom just in case. Some girls are not "girly" at all. There may be some things she already has and/or that parents don't allow. If you call, ask for sizes and mention that you'd like to get her clothes, or books or toys. Asking mom for a recommendation is always good.

Another idea is a disposable camera. She'd love to be the big girl and take her own pictures.

My son (who just turned 3) was invited to a neighbor's birthday party recently - birthday girl was turning 5 and we hardly know them (just from playing outside, but schedules don't coincide so not very often). I had the same dilemma with wondering what to get her. We got her a cute beach bag she could carry herself and put a cute towel inside that matched (both had lots of pink). This was great because I don't know her size, or likes/dislikes (a lot of people mentioned princesses and Hannah Montana but like you I have no clue what this particular child is in to). The bag/towel were a HUGE hit at the party - even her little friends wanted to take turns carrying her new bag. We bought both at Target - and I think they are even on sale now. I think I spent a total of about $20. Good luck!

I know a lot of people have suggested the Webkinz....just make sure the little girl is actually allowed to play on line. Otherwise, the princess dolls are great or dolls. One thing I always did for my neices and nephew was buy them a special book something that would a keeper through the years, and put a special message for them to remember when they were older. So if you like that idea how about a book and a beach/blanket towel or umbrella so she can sit outside and read or be read too.

Just another thought.

The other thing I did before my kids were born is I would go shopping and wait till I found a parent with kids in that age group I was shopping for and ask the kids what kinda things they would like. Kids know kids.

Good luck.

Hi J., In case you don't have to many ideas already here are a few more. I have a son but in Kindergarten they get invited to lots of girl birthday parties and boy parties.
So I have come to learn what 5 year olds girls like.
There are those "Pet Shop" line of toys (which I think are adorable) and Polly Pockets, also beads in the craft isle for girls to make their own jewelry. Actally anything at Micheal's Crafts or Joanne's Crafts are good for girls.
Since I only have a boy it is soooo much fun buying for girls once in a while. :)
Have fun at the party.

I just let my 5 year old daughter pick out a toy at Walmart, and she picked the Barbie that comes with a BBQ Grill and patio table. Other things she likes are.... Polly Pockets (she loves the convertible car and the swimming pool); anything with Princesses on it; her bug house (5-year olds sometimes are really interested in bugs); and her Pet Shop toys. She also loves bringing her purse in the car filled with sparkly lipgloss - her carpool friend and her rave over it.
