My niece sent out letters to people about 4 mos ahead and asked them to write a special memory of my sister. There were letters from friends, relatives and business associates. She then compiled them into a memory book and gave it to her. It was a great keepsake and means a lot to my sister.

For my husband, I am taking him to the Virgin Islands to celebrate if he will take a day off. 😉. On his birthday the kids and I made a jar with 50 reasons why we love you and a second jar filled with 50 Hershey kisses.

Blessings!

It depends on the friend. Can you share a little about your friend? Is it a surprise party or does your friend know about it? Not everyone likes surprises, and some people have their own ideas about what kind of party they'd enjoy.

Depending upon the personality of your friend, a roast could be fun! Friends and family share stories (yes, some embarrassing) and shine the spotlight on the honoree. It can still be a classy event. There are a lot of "guidelines" online, so do a little research.

O. of the most memorable things I recieved at my surprise 50th was from my BFF--two photo collages of pictures of us together, through the years: childhood, graduations, weddings, etc.

I think this is hard because it really depends on your friend.

When I hit my most recent milestone birthday, all I wanted to do was go dancing because I love to dance and never get to go anymore. I went with friends to a show with an 80s band and we had a blast dancing all night.

However, this would have been my DH's nightmare. He chose to go to a golf school for his milestone birthday. He was in his own version of heaven, golfing all day every day with a pro to help him.

I don't think this is a male/female difference, it's a difference in what we like to do. What does your friend like? Is she a party person? Is she a person with a lot of casual friends, or just a few close friends? Do you think she'd actually prefer a blowout party? Some people love them, to others it would feel like a chore. If a party isn't her thing, how about spa weekend with her BFFs and a few bottles of wine? If she's artistic, maybe one of the painting parties I see all over the place now. It's a fun way to be with friends without feeling like a self-conscious center of attention.

We had parties for those "0" milestone birthdays. Usually someone makes a photo board (on foam board) of baby and childhood photos, high school, etc.) or even a slide show for the computer. There are always a bunch of age-related joke gifts (like vodka and prune juice), of course. We've asked people to bring something creative - a limerick, a poem, an anecdote, even a song. If even one or two people write new "parody" lyrics to a familiar song and then bring song sheets for everyone to sing along, it's hilarious. People usually choose something everyone knows like "Take me out to the ballgame" or "I've been working on the railroad" and then they change the words to put in stuff about the birthday person. A few people always have a story about the person and usually it's funny with some heartfelt stuff thrown in. It's the variety that is the most interesting and engaging. It creates a lot of laughs and is the evening's official entertainment. It doesn't matter what people come up with because it's a gift of the heart.

One time we followed a friend's suggestion and moved all the regular furniture out of the living room or to the very outer edges, and we rented a few bar-height tables from the rental place. We put some tablecloths on them (paper) and some "50" confetti from the party store, then a simple round mirror and votive candle from the craft store - it looked like a sort of elegant cocktail lounge, and people had places to put their appetizer plates and drinks, which they really appreciated. And it required them to mill around and meet each other, the goal of any party. For a good sized living room with a couch and a few chairs, we got away with just 3 tables, and put all the food on the dining room table.

A coworker went on three trips to celebrate big birthday milestones this year of her friends. One was to Vegas, one to Hawaii, and one an Alaskan cruise. We are in the DC region so these were all pretty big trips!!

When my husband turned 40 we had a big '70's themed party and everyone dressed disco and hippies. It was super fun and easy to do. Good luck.
