I just use tea bags and lemon juice and sugar. I keep mixing in the sugar and lemon until it tastes right.
I was wondering if anyone had a homemade iced tea (with tea bags) recipe? My mom used to make it when I was younger well that & sun tea and I thought I remembered how, but when I made it it didn't taste right. This is hard for me because normally I would call her & ask her but my mom passed away last Christmas from Cancer at the young age of 47. Anyone that could help would be greatly appreciated.
I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who submitted your ice tea recipes for me. I never knew there was so many variations. I did find the one that was the closest to my mom's. This is a great group and I am soo glad to be a part of it.

I use 8 teabags (Red Rose) with a few cups of boiling water in a 1 gallon pitcher. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Remove tea bags (don't squeeze or it gets cloudy). Add a slightly heaping half cup of sugar. Fill container with cold water. Stir and serve.
Hi J.,
Sorry to hear about your Mom. My Mom has always made her tea this way. Add about 5 tea bags to boiled water and let sit for an hour or so. She pours it into a pitcher, mixes about 1/2 C suger and about 1/4 lemonade mix. It gives it a lemony kick with out having to add the fresh lemons each time. Play with the amounts till you find your perfect blend. Enjoy!!
Hello J.,
I'm so sorry to hear about your mom you are so strong.I think it is great that alot of woman pass down the tea that there mom's made.I love my moms tea also.Which is 4 Lipton Tea bags after bowling some water put the 4 tea bags in. I let it set for about 30 mins and then put it in a jug with 1 cup of sugar( but depends how much sugar u like) and then stir u can let it sit in direct sun but i like it cold so I hurry up and get it into the fridge.
Good luck finding one you like and that reminds you of your moms
I use a 2 gallon jug, 10 regular tea bags and 2 raspberry flavored tea bags and use 2/3 cups water....and make sure as i fill the jug its hot water and leave it sit out for a few hours before putting it in the fridge.
Hi, J.. I grew up on homemade iced tea - I was born and grew up in North Carolina. I use 8 of the small tea bags in a medium saucepan of water. I boil the water, add the tea bags, turn down the heat and let it simmer for maybe a minute. I turn it off and let it cool for about 30 minutes. I prefer my tea sweetened (I use real sugar - I figure real can't be as bad as all the fake sugars) so I put 1/2 to 1 cup in a gallon container, add the tea, and enough water to make a gallon. It almost tastes like my Mom makes, but not quite. Oddly enough, my mom always made the best tea and never drank it!! Hope that helps!

my hubby is a total tea fan and since we've been married he's gotten me addicted to it too. :) I don't drink as much as he does, but it sure is the best drink. We always have 5 gallons in the fridge at all times. He drinks it all day at work and as do I. All we do is place 3 Lipton tea bags in a pan and add some water then we bring it to a boil and let it boil for a minute or so. Then we already have our pitchers ready with 2/3 cup of sugar in them and pour the hot tea in, stir up the sugar until it dissolves then add enough cold water to fill the pitcher. Great!!! Delicious!! I don't drink anything else, except water of course! :) I hope this helps you and i hope you enjoy. It's quick, it's easy and it tastes great.
Sun-baked tea
5 or 6 tea bags (your flavor) placed in a clear pitcher (large) filled with water & a cup and half of white gradulated sugar. Cover and set in sun. Set all day.
stove tea
Boil water-(to fill large pitcher) with tea bags (5 or 6). Add sugar 1 1/2 C. and set in refridge. Until cool.
Sorry to hear about yur mom's passing. I'm sure she would have loved your girls to pieces and make them ice tea too. I have found recently that the blend of tea in the store has changed. It used to be orange pecoe and now is mostly black tea. I prefer the orange. So this is what my mother used to make too. Steep 10 bags in a pot of hot water, then strain in to one gallon pitcher. Add 1 and 1/2 to3/4 cup sugar and stir well, till disolved. Add water to fill. I add one lemon that has been rolled on the counter, to loosen the juice, then sliced in half. I put it dirtectly into pitcher too. Serve over ice. This is sweet tea. But like I said, I perfer the orange pecoe blends. The black tea is a bit bitter. Hope this helps. We used alot of tea like this when our kids were growing up. I have 6 kids of which 4 are adults and ask for this tea at every family gathering!
Hello, I use this recipe every time and it was my mom's, and it tastes just like McDonalds sweet tea. I use 10 lipton tea bags for a gallon container. Bring cold water along with the tea bags up to a boil, let it boil for approximately 5-10 minutes, then remove from heat. Add 1 1/2-2 cups of sugar till it dissolves and pour over ice. I use it all the time, hope you like it. My mom passed in 2004 due to cancer also, and I know the feeling about wanting to call and ask things.
ok- I have tried lots of different recipies, but I always end up with tea that is either too bitter, or the sugar doesn't dissolve all of the way. I found a recipe on Foodnetwork.com-
http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_99...
(cut and paste that in your browser).
The mint sprigs make the flavor a lot smoother- I only use a few leaves though- and I use decaf tea bags because the kids LOVE it and drink it a lot!
The one I have was my great-grandmother's iced tea recipe. Here it is:
4 qt. water
5 tea bags
1 1/2 c. sugar - little less than
1/3 c. lemon juice
Place tea bags in water, heat til water is steaming - turn off stove, let tea bags steep for about 40 minutes - add sugar and lemon juice while water is hot so the sugar can dissolve.
Let me know how it comes out for you, if you try it. And just as a warning, it is pretty sweet... if it's too sweet for you, just adjust how much sugar you add next time.
Good luck!

hi
i use 8 tea bags and 8 sweet n lows
i boil the water put the tea bags in let it sit for at least 30 minutes and then pour it onto ice in a pitcher
i put the sweet n low in while its still hot
You probably have been answered by now, but I'd like to tell you about our ice tea. My husband's mother always had ice tea in the fridge and so do we. We've been married 31 years and it has never changed.
We boil a gallon of water, when it comes to a boil we add 5 single tea bags. Let it brew a minimum of 30 minutes. In a one gallon pitcher we put a cup of sugar then add the brewed tea. Stir to mix the sugar and that's it!!!
Since we have ice tea in the house all day, and brew it twice or more each day, we have to make sure the pot is clean as well as the gallon pitcher.

Remember how everyone used to make sun tea back in the day? We did all the time. But I heard it produces bacteria or something and you shouldn't drink it. It's because you should steep the teabags in water that's come to a boil. I love iced tea, and I make it all the time. I just use whatever type tea bags I'm in the mood for. My favorite is peach but there are so many flavors now, you could be all day deciding. I think the key is to use about six tea bags for a two quart container. Boil about 1 and a half quarts of water. Remove from heat and add tea bags. Let steep for as long as you can wait. Put in a 2 quart container. Add 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup of sugar. Add a tray of ice or two. That's how my mom always made iced tea.
2 gallons of water
14 tea bags
1 1/2 cups of sugar
This is how we make it and it's really good- not too sugary, but not too bland.
Hope you like it!

As a southern girl I can tell you how we make our iced tea!! To make sun tea take a gallon of store bought spring or drinking water put 6 normal size Lipton Tea bags in the jug put the lid back on and let set 6-12 hours until color suits you (the darker the color the stonger the flavor), for sweet tea add 1/2-1 cup of sugar depending on sweet tooth. For boiled iced tea put 6 Lipton tea bags in about 4 cups of water and boil for 3-5 minutes let cool for 5 minutes and slowly add to 3 quarts of iced water. If you want to add sugar to boiled recipe add to hot water as sugar blends better in the warm than cold.
jaime I take a 1gallon picher use 12 tea bags put one kettle of boiling hot water into pitcher with tea bags let set 20 minutes fill rest of pitcher with ice cubes and cold tap water with 3/4 cup sugar or more if you like it sweeeter. Enjoy
Hello J.,
It just so happens I have 2 websites under my favorites that I refer to when I want to make iced tea. The first website uses a sugar syrup and gives it the sweet taste and the other website is your sun tea type of recipe. At any rate I think they both make a wonderful tea. I am so sorry for your loss but would like to wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season and know your mother is looking down on you from heaven with a big smile. http://home.att.net/~ejlinton/sweettea.html http://www.whats-cooking.ca/2007/05/sweet_tea_or_real_bre...
