I Need to Find Fresh Basil to Make Pesto

I am having an awful time trying to find fresh basil to make pesto. I have tried, Sprouts, Basha's, Frys, Safeway, Lee Lee, and even Costco and I haven't found a package of more than an ounce or two (I need 2 cups). When we lived in Wisconsin, I would go to a farmer's market that was open two days every week during the growing season and could bring home a big bunch of it (probably 3 or 4 cups)for $1! We moved here last March and I have yet to see a farmer's market like what I am used to. There was a sign for sweet basil at Lee Lee over a big pile of bunches of spearmint - that was the closest I was able to find. Any help would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I did find Basil for $3.99 at Sunflower Market in Tempe. The Pesto turned out great!

Trader Joes. I get it there all the time and make pesto at home. It's a big box of freshly cut basil and costs 1/2 the price of the iddy bidy package at Basha's. They have it most of the time.

Maybe Sunflower markets they have a website with their locations on it.I work for a grocery store and we have been bombarded with emails from corp. stating that there will many shortages on fresh produce itmes because of all the recent freezing temps. So this may be more difficult than normal to find.So i would just try calling people to see if they have any stock on hand most stores get at least 3-4 deliveries a week.Good luck!

I'm not totally sure but have you tried Superstition Ranch Market? Or go to home depot and but a fresh plant and grow your own. I would think that would be your best bet. I'm from IA and have a hard time with markets too. Having your own garden can be a task in itself at times here too. Good luck.

Every Wednesday between 10-2 there is a farmer's market on Camelback and 22nd street. I have yet to go but I hear it is really good. That is about the only one I know of around here. I also like the store Sunflower Market, they have a lot of great produce, the only one I know of is on Mcclintock/Southern, but if you do a search you might be able to find one near you. Hope this helps?

I grow my own basil. I don't know if you like to garden or not, but I got a small plant already started from a nursery (they also have it at wal-mart sometimes) and it took off in no time. Basil was, for me, a particularly low-maintenance plant.
