You maybe could try pilates. I have lower back problems as well and was paralyzed for a while, but pilates have worked wonders for me. In the first 3 weeks I lost 4 pounds and 2 inches.

Some women wish they had more curves then there are some of us who would like to get rid of some of the curves (that would be me). I need advice on how to slim my hips, butt and upper/inner thighs. I've recently lost about 15 lbs but it seems my trouble areas are still that (my trouble areas). I had low back surgery 7 months ago so I can't do anything strenuous but I've been doing squats which helps somewhat but I need something else. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks :)
Just wanted to thank everyone for their help and advice. I havent tried the yoga yet (I want to find a good DVD but haven't had the chance to go out and look for one) but I have been doing squats, jumping jacks, butt lifts and I'm starting to jump rope (its still kind of hard w/ my bad leg but I'm getting there). These are really seeming to help, I can feel it in my hips and thighs. The butt lifts using an exercise ball really feel effective :) Hopefully by summer I will be brave enough to wear a bathing suit again :)

Hey B.
Try pilates! I love them. They are no impact so it should not be a problem with your back. There are a million different tapes out there. I just purchased the Crunch series Super Slim Down Pilates and Yoga blend. It is great. I have also had a Denise Austin dvd. I don't like her because she is sooooo annoying, but that is just me. My new dvd is not at all. Anyhow, pilates are great. When you are through working out, you feel like you have done something, but you are not terribly sore, plus it doesn't take long to see some results. I am sure that you could find a routine specifically for your trouble areas. Congrats on losing the weight. Keep it up.

Pilates is wonderful. Worked for me after my son.
Well if you want to or need to loose more weight try www.sparkpeople.com it is a great site with great ideas. then look at The Firm exercise videos. They may be too strenous for you now but when you recover from the surgery they are great for butt and thighs.

Hi B.,
Welcome to Daphne - I live in Mobile, but work in Daphne. I have a membership to the YMCA in Daphne - although I haven't been able to go recently because of my work load (I try to swim or walk the treadmill on my lunch hour).
It's a great place. My chiroprator (sp) wants me to swim as much as possible for my back. They have an indoor pool which you can swim laps at any time, they also offer some great aqua aerobics classes as well. They have a daycare area for the children and with a family membership, it's free and they can participate in summer classes as well. (Now I sound like I work for the Y - I don't - I just think it's really great).
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly at ____@____.com
Hope this helps!!!

Belly dance! It's all about curves, and being a woman. On top of that strengthens your muscles, and toning. Plus, learning how to isolate muscles is so empowering. I just can't put it into words. I have been belly dancing for 6 years now. My instructor has been dancing 17 years, since she was 17. She is really good at helping people not hurt their problem areas, knees, back, shins, etc. I could go on and on about it. We have classes in Jackson at butterfly yoga in the Fondren area. You can see a few of our troupe photos on myspace. Missihippy is the troupe name, I forget the URL, but can look for it if you like.
After posting I noticed you do not live near me. See if you can find classes near you. There are many dvd's out there, and some fused with pilates or yoga, but I think it would be hard to learn the dance part without someone there to help you. Many belly dancers use yoga for stretching and just overall well being, and pilates for core strength.
Hi B. - I'd say try yoga. I have a yoga/pilates DVD - i believe it errs more on the side of yoga though. It's not that strenuous and you can work the parts of the body as hard as you see fit. My hips and legs slimmed down big time doing yoga. I do that 40 minutes three times a week, eat low fat regularly and for lunch I substitute with Arbonne shake meal replacements. It works for me because eating low fat is easy to do with the family, so no funky diets - the shakes are easy for me and i don't have to worry about preparing me a lunch really and the yoga - heck! i need the centering with a two year old running around my feet all day. Did I mention I lost 30 lbs in about 6 months doing that? (I had a good amount of pregnancy weight to lose!) Hope this helps!
If you are looking for a place to workout. Curves is great especially if you don't have much time like myself. It takes about 30 minutes to do the workout and the stretching. There is a great support system there also. You should look into if that is something you might be interested in. I had trouble loosing the weight after I had my son. So, I went and signed up been going for about six months now and I have lost about forty pounds and have toned up alot. I hope this helps you because the weight thing is really hard to get through. Sparks people is great also. It helps you with meals and stuff if you need help with that. I hope everything works out for you in the end. If you have any questions feel free to contact me because I have been there and am still there in a few ways and know exactly what you are going through and how hard it is.
I know this may sound crazy, but try walking on your tip toes all day. I have used this, and sucking in my stomach as much as I can remember, and it seriously works. I have advanced arthritis through out my back, and am only 26, so I really can't do any thing exercise wise. These are things you can do around the house, and they are not inconvenient. I know it is considered a type of exercise, and it starts with an "iso" something. I have gone down from a size 18 to a size 14 since November, and that aside from cleaning my house up and down stairs all day, is all I do! Good luck!
