Mamas & Papas-

What do I have to do to effectively clear some memory on my i-phone? I am getting an error message saying that I am out of storage? I am willing to delete cache and delete certain apps, but I am not sure how to do either. Couldn't get any pics of DS blowing out his candles yesterday because I hit this snafu.

Thanks,
F. B.

What can I do next?

Back up your phone to your computer (using iTunes - plug your phone into your computer using the USB cable, launch iTunes, and it will automatically begin backing up your phone). Make sure you also launch iPhoto so your pictures and videos back up.

Then, delete any videos from your phone. For me, it's always the videos that eat up all the memory. You may also find that some of your apps use a lot of memory. If there are any you don't use, delete them (you can always download them again from the app store if you change your mind in the future).

I didn't even think about the amount of memory on my phone when I bought it, but now that I'm upgrading to the iPhone 6, I ordered the one with the most memory. I never want to deal with this issue again!

There are several areas that suck up a lot of space. Any attachments sent via text or email take up memory space, so any picture or video someone may have sent you is taking up storage space. Storing all of your photos and video on your phone take up space. Music and books suck up a good amount as well.
I always back up all of my photos on my laptop on a regular basis and only keep favorites on my phone. I routinely go through and save photos from my texts onto my phone that then get backed up onto my laptop and I delete them from the text. I refuse to upload my pictures to the cloud. The cloud ate several months of my husband's pictures and refuses to give them back. Says they are there but refuses to let us access them. We also ran into not having enough space to save them all unless we paid a monthly fee to have more storage space. My laptop is free.
I don't keep extra books on my phone, not that I read much on my phone as I find it too small but my kids will sometimes have something on there. I don't keep a ton of music, instead keeping most of it on my laptop or accessible in the cloud.
Of course delete any apps you don't actually use. It's amazing how many can get buried on there that you forget you have.
When you plug your iPhone into your computer and iTunes opens there will be a status bar that shows how much space different things take up broken down into photos, apps, documents and data and a couple other categories depending on what you have on your phone. To download your photos onto your computer, plug the phone in. It should pop up with autoplay just like an SD card out of a camera or a flash drive or CD does. There should be an option to download the photos, follow the instructions of the program wizard. It's a pretty self explanatory process thankfully.

Plug it into your computer, move all your pics to the cloud, then you can delete them from your phone.

Pictures. I have the same problem. I tried last week to get a picture of my little man dressed up in no fire suit sitting in no fire truck. No space. I about died.

My plan is to delete all the email and to transfer pictures to the computer.

To delete apps - hold down on one of the apps for a few seconds and they will all start wiggling. Ones that can be deleted will have an x on the upper left corner. Once you've deleted what you can, press the home button and they will stop wiggling. To clear the cache, google is your friend (but I don't think that will help with storage options).

Definitely delete apps you aren't using. But my guess is that photos and graphics are taking up all the space. If you have attachments in your emails that have graphics attached, they may be occupying space - so on your computer, move those emails into folders or put the graphics into folders by themselves. Move photos into albums, delete the blurry ones that you aren't keeping, and see if your phone took 2 versions of every photo (a regular and a high resolution one). And as Veruca Salt said, press on the app until it wiggles, then manipulate/move/delete. Good luck!

And as always, when all else fails, do what I do - ask someone between the ages of 10 and 20 for assistance!

Also watch for apps that have an online/offline function. For example - Spotify. I LOVE LOVE LOVE spotify. And I was creating playlists and then making them available "offline" so that I could listen to them at work (while not on wi-fi) without using data. However, that places a certain amount of data on your phone. So, you have remove the offline option and then it will free up space.

I am HORRIBLE about keeping texts. I like to have them to refer to later. But they take up space on your phone. So, any text you need the info from - take a "screen shot picture" of it (home button + on/off button at the exact same time) and then upload to your computer. Then, delete your texts.

Any app that you can store "pictures" - we had a shopping app that we could take pictures of the item so that whoever was shopping could just look at the item if it was something that we wanted a particular brand or whatever. It was SUPER cool..... except it ate up space.

Also - my iPad and my iPhone use the same cloud account. So, I have tapped that out....... I either have to buy storage or put some on my computer and get rid of some of my storage.
