I have left my windows open and ran the ceiling fans, burned candles and my house stinks. I keep up with the trash and it's not my garbage disposal but my house has a rotten smell to it. I have tried spraying febreeze on everything and room sprays nothing seems to help. Does anyone know of something to make my house smell fresh again.
Ok so maybe not a rotten smell more like a sour smell. It's not bad enough to be a dead animal. It's not rank its just like stagnant air.

I burned something I was cooking so bad that I couldn't get the horrible smell out of my house for a week. It was freezing outside so I couldn't open the windows. I tried everything and found the only thing that worked was pouring a big bowl of white vinegar and leaving in on the counter for a few days until the smell was gone. I don't remember my house smelling like vinegar. I just remember the smell going away!
Good luck!
I have a stinky closet in my house from the previous tenant, who kept her catbox in there. The best freshener I've found is this: http://www.citrusmagic.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=6164...
It's only 5 bucks and it lasts a good 2 months in a small space. For a whole house, I'd get one for each room, 2 for big rooms.
Have you gotten your carpet cleaned recently? You might want to check into a cleaner that offers a nontoxic solution (so your kids won't be affected) because carpet can harbour some serious odors. Maybe clean your upholstery, too?
Hope that helps..
I would check on the dead animal possibility first. If that's not it, you could try bowls of vinegar on the counter. I can't remember if I read it here or somewhere else, but I tried it and it does help.
Vineger absorbs and binds odors. Of course, then you have a vineger smell but that goes. Try leaving a bowl out in the kitchen overnight. At least it's a cheap tip to try.
Sol-U-Mel will to the job! It's from a company called Melaleuca. It has worked in my Dad's house--he has two cats and two dogs, so it used to always have the musty, animal smell to it. The best thing is, it can also be used as a carpet cleaner (and about a dozen other uses, too). I'm a Marketing Executive for Melaleuca, so if you would like more information, just drop me an email: ____@____.com or ____@____.com
Check your dishwasher. Sometimes mine doesn't empty all the way and the smell is stagnant water in the bottom. It doesn't take much to make the whole house stink.
This can usually be remedied by running your dishwasher again, but check the trap first and make sure it's not clogged.
You may have a dead critter in your wall or chimney.
I was thinking the same thing as the first response when I read this. It sounds like you have something dead in your attic or walls (a squirrel or rat will stench the house in a major way!).
You could try opening up baking soda boxes in various rooms.
Good luck!
I know this is gross but you may have something dead in your attic or walls. My Dr's office recently had this happen and it ended up being a skunk in the attic. I hope it isn't that but you should look into it.
You might have a dead animal under or in the walls of your house causing smell.
