I would like to throw my husband a 40th bday party this july - maybe the weekend of the 12th, i need ideas on places i could have it that would be fun or just have it at my house?? My home is pretty small but we could be in the backyard too, I have a great backyard but it may be too hot?? I can't afford to spend alot of money but he is such a great guy that i want to do something special for him - as a child he never had a bday party - can you believe that! He is the youngest of 8 kids and they just didn't have parties. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, maybe just having a kid-like party would be funny - with pinatas and stuff - what do you all think? oh yeah i would be inviting about 20 people. thanks!!!! (we live in Hurst)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So we had the birthday party and it was a blast! We just had it in my backyard and the only thing I rented was a margarita machine - must say it was a great idea - thanks moms! It was kinda summer theme / luau but I did a shrimp boil which turned out to be the best idea. Everyone loved it. We also had a DVD made of my husband from when he was born to now with photos and then his family members from ND all talked to him on the video. It was hilarious and a total hit! I wanted to do the candy table with a certain mom on here but I just couldn't afford it right now - I think the idea of vintage candy was so cool, anyway next time! We had a blast and you all were a great source of ideas! thanks!

If you decide to go the kid themed idea...how about a candy buffet? It is so much fun and don't have to be expensive depending on the type of candy you pick.

If you have it in the yard, you can buy spray water misters that people can stand under at Home Depot/Walmart... I would do it after maybe 6 or 7 pm when it isn't as hot. You could have a barbeque and subs and an ice cream bar for desert.

I think the pinata thing would be funny... of course it may explode fast if the adults are doing the swinging!

Hi D.,

I am trying to plan a 30th birthday party in September. There is a place in Hurst called Texas Hall. It's cheaper if you have it on a sunday. It's like $85.00 and hour which is kind of expensive but its the only place that lets you have alcohol. Another idea what about renting some lanes at a bowling alley and bringing cake. Or have it in your back yard and decorate with Tiki stuff. You can let the kids give out leis. Maybe borrow a few fans from friends.. they also have the fans that blow water.. if you have it late in the evening it may not be that hot.. You can get small pools for the kiddos.. Hope this helps.. Happy planning!

We went here for a friends 40th birthday and it was nice. She had them cater hot wings, chicken tenders, and a couple of other things that I can't remember now. We paid for our own drinks. The food was excellent.

Good luck!

I think you all need to go to Dave and Busters in Dallas! It's a place where an adult can be a kid....after a certain time on the weekends they only allow adults, and you get to play games, and you can even have dinner there, and drinks ofcourse. So he could be a kid, and adult at the same time, since no kids are allowed after a certain time. Have fun!

Have it at your house - it's more comfortable and less hassle than taking all of the food, etc to other places. Have a fiesta - make tacos, refried beans, rice, etc - everything you can do ahead of time and enjoy the party. The pinata would be a blast too! Especially if your group drinks margaritas! Check out big lots or dollar tree for paper goods. And by all means - if someone says "can I help you?" say YES! Let others bring things to help.

Hi, I through my husband a 30th birthday party last March. I did it at our home and it was a success! I had it at our home to cut cost and for the same reason I just did heavy appetizers. I own a catering company we could do your food, set and clean up to make things really easy for the party. Give me a call and I'll give you a quote.

Go to lake Grapevine and have it there you can get a cabana for free and grill out swim, fish, rent a jet ski for the day, set up volleyball or horse shoes whatever your style but its so hot it would be nice to jump in and cool off. Have everone bring there own drinks in an ice chest and chairs and you provide the meat maybe just burgers and kabobs. You can set up tiki torches to ward off mosquitoes and make sure to ice a watermelon for the kids......bring a radio. just a thought, have fun and take lots a pictures no matter what you do!!

You could have a mock trial. The charge: Getting Old. Assemble friends to be on the side of the prosecution who will tell stories of him acting old (forgetting things, feeling sore, etc.). And you could assemble people to be on the defense who would tell stories of your husband being young at heart. Have an impartial jury. (maybe the kids of some of the people?) Have black balloons on the chairs that are set up courtroom like. When we did this we used an actual court room (we pulled strings, my dad is a lawyer), then after the verdict was released (he was guilty of being old) everyone went to the church for a pre-memorial service where people got up and talked about what he meant to them. Very touching and a blast! It was not morbid at all, totally light and fun.

I don't know what part of the Metroplex you are in, but we just threw a birthday party at our church, and it worked out perfectly. It was at First Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Church - their website is fjuuc.com. We used Coleman Hall, which is a big open room with tables and chairs you can set up however you want. We also rented the kitchen, which is huge, and has everything you can want. You can opt to clean up yourself, or pay for custodial service when you're done. There is a park right next door, and we set up a volleyball net outside. It's in east Fort Worth, if that's convenient for you.

What about a water balloon fight or a water gun shoot out? I have done both and everyone had a fabulous time especially the adults. Draw up teams and give a silly prize for the winners. You could make the water games like paint ball where teams must capture a flag or enemies. Set rules like no running into the house for safety. Remember to take lots of pictures.
