I did a seach for this question and really couldnt find what I was looking for. My husband is turning 30 next saturday (july 30th) and Im trying to plan a gathering for him. Here are somethings I need to consider he doesnt want to go to a club but does want to celebrate. He is getting baptized the next morning so we will be up early. My mom will be in town and her birthday is the same as hubbies so we will need to include her. And no babysitter for the kid :) So I was thinking to make it not pricey we can do a little something at the house with drinks and some finger foods. That way our parents, kids and friends could all attend. But we've always had themed parties at house meaning fight parties, superbowl parties, etc. So how do we keep everyone entertained? We do have a pool table. Is that enough? Do we get a dj? I'm not set on a house party so any ideas are welcome as long as they are cost efficient. TIA!

What can I do next?

If the Blue Mesa in Frisco isn't too far from you, you could check there. They have a great little party room that allows the adults to hang out while kids run around without disturbing other customers. You can host the dinner - they do buffets for reasonable prices - and ask people to buy their own drinks...or buy their first drink or something. We had my dad's birthday there and it was a great success!

People entertain themselves with conversation and a little music in the background. Not too loud so you have to yell. Just make sure that the mix of people is right and that you have some food for adults and kids and maybe some activities for the kids (sorry can't suggest because I don't know the ages). If you MUST have a theme, then go black for the dreaded 30th and over the hill or go white and call it his new birthday eve, because when he is baptized the next day he will be born again into the body of Christ.

why not do a game theme? there's pool. find retro board games, checkers, etc. and set up a few extra tables. it's amazing what you can do with a deck of cards! Go to the dollar store and buy cheap lawn games if you have a decent sized backyard. horseshoes, bean bag toss.....

If you know of anyone that has a pool or an apartment w/a pool that would allow you to have it there that would be the best, especially with this darn TX heat. My cousin was nice enought to let us have my Hubby's 40th at her place last year. We rented some tables and had a few pop up canopies for shade. Kids swam and we had a Keg then I asked for people to bring their favorite Bottle of whatever in leiu of gifts. So then I just provided the mixers for that. Then had "make your own tacos bar. That was cool. I also did a big crock-pot of queso cheese so they could make taco's or nachos, then we had a few tables set up inside for the older folks and had some card games available. Then we used my hubbys Ipod that has like 2,000 songs on it and hooked it up for the music. All in all it was a great party. And the only expense was the tacos, queso, the mixers, paper products and I did a big water-cooler of lemonade. Oh and the keg and some bags of ice! Sister-in-law provided the cake! If you are not lucky enuf to have a swimming pool, the just move the party to a little later in the evening and have the living room set up as a game station for the kids to play wii and other crafts or games to keep them busy and have card games, music, jello-shots are always fun and that should be sufficient. Like somelse said adults can entertain themselves!

We had a BBQ with his family a couple weeks ago for his birthday. He also just turned 30. Everyone brought something. We provided all the meat.
