How to Make Lifesize Scarecrows

Thank you all for any advice here..........

Background....I am President of the Cheer Booster Club. We work closely with a relatively new shopping center (SC) where our cheerleaders volunteer and the SC donates $$ to our General fund which helps fund training for competition.

We've been volunteering monthly for routine kid activities which is easy. We are scheduled to make and donate at least 10 scarecrows for the SC fall landscape. They are donating substantially more $$ for this effort and reimbursing expenses. They are providing the hay as well. On top of that, they are making this a PR event and our girls will be photographed and maybe on the news. That is a good thing because we all know if the high school girls think they'll be on tv or in the paper they will volunteer and we need all the volunteers we can get for this one.

SO the question..........how do we make these scarecrows? I've been googling. We have enough jeans, shirtts, some hats, gloves, etc. We plan to use old newsprint, stuff it in plastic bags (these scarecrows will be outside in the elements), and stuff the scarecrows. Some scarecrows will be tied to poles, etc so we don't really need the poles for arms and legs.

Any ideas from you creative moms out there to help me pull this off???

Thank you SO much in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Scarecrows were a hit. We worked for about 4 hours 1 Saturday afternoon. They are up on display at the shopping center display and look great. We had, men, boys, girl, etc. Thank you for your ideas.

You can stuff them with just about anything, leaves, hay, newspapers, cotton batting, etc. I would definitely make some themed ones, like cheerleaders, teachers, football players, etc and stage them. Also, try to make the faces very recognizable with paint and even add wigs. I'd also make some standing, some sitting etc just for the variety. I would also decorate the area the scarescrows will be in. Hay bales, corn shocks, pumpkins, some fall mums, etc.

Have fun and hope you make lots of money for the fundraiser!

Sounds like you have a good plan! ;) The only suggestion I had was maybe to go a little crazy with the scarecrows and do some regular "traditional" ones with overalls, flannels, etc. and then maybe mix it up and some fun ones like cheerleader scarecrows, teacher scarecrows, football player scarecrows, etc. It might be cute and maybe will sell more?? I suppose it also depends on your agreement with the store, but it's an idea! Have fun!

20 years ago I made a some type of scare crow. What I remember using was white stockings (you could do any color) and stuffing them with some type of cotton like stuff (I am sure they have it at craft stores but don't know what it's called - maybe batting). We may also have used stockings for the arms and head. It lasted quite a few years out for the autumn season.

To clarify, I am in retail so I can get lots of bubble wrap.. You could ask some stores to donate it..

When I make them I use Bamboo poles for legs. and make like an H so that the legs can be stuck in the ground.. We have tons of bamboo in the neighborhood so I just ask if we can cut it.. Then I tie the pole together with wire.. You may want to screw and bolt them together to make them more sturdy..

I stuffed them with bubble wrap.. I am in retail, so I have access to lots of it.. then I just stick some hay our or the neck cuffs and legs of the pants.. I use burlap for the faces and usually we painted the faces..

I used to wire the hat to the head. and used rope for belts.
