Hi girls, I'm planning a Wizard of Oz party for my soon to be nine year old daughter. She was Dorothy for Halloween and wants the fun to carry over into her birthday. We will have it at our home (in case it rains we can move inside). You all have such wonderful and creative ideas! It's fun to see what comes from your imagination!

I've ordered the plates & napkins online already. I'm thinking of "stations" we can do such as make Glenda's wand, then pin the heart on the tin man-but need to know how to make a tin man. I've got a little house that she used to play in and am thinking if I can make it look like it fell on the witch, but not sure how. What ideas for food? I think I can arrange fruit like a rainbow. I'd like to do something with the sands of time when Dorothy gets captured, but not sure what-maybe sand art? I did order a rainbow pinata, that should be fun. I've got a few ideas, but would like some input on what order to do things and maybe create a story line-like Toto's been stolen, we've got to go do things to rescue him, etc. Mostly her girl scout troop will guests, so they are a bit older and I want to keep things fun and interesting. Thanks for your help!

Maybe just use cardboard cut outs to make the tin man and then wrap them with foil. Draw the face on with permanent marker. You've got lots of other great ideas! Have fun!

This party sounds like so much fun, what a GREAT idea! I don't know how big you want the Tin Man to be, but you could always use poster board since it shapes nicely and comes in so many colors.
As far as games, maybe you could separate the kids into groups and make a scanvenger hunt of things they need to find.
I hope this party is a huge success!

Making a tin man shouldn't be hard at all.... use an old shirt of your husband's, stuff it full of newspaper or an old pillow and spray paint it silver - do the same with a pair of sweat pants if you want a whole body. The head can be a silver painted balloon and the hat can be a upside down funnel.

For the house falling on the witch: get a pair of striped tights and stuff them with newspaper or pillow stuffing to look like "legs" - add a pair of shoes, then put the house on top of the legs and have the parts from the knees down sticking out from the side... arrange the "legs" to look like the house fell on her... might also help to put a broom part way under the house too, and maybe get an old Halloween costume witch hat to lay beside the house. I believe that is kinda what it looked like in the movie but it has been a long time since I saw it.

Food: yellow brick road pizzas - use submarine sandwich rolls, pasta sauce, and lots of YELLOW cheese.

For the Toto thing, perhaps a scavenger hunt that takes them from place to place to "find Toto" or find their way back home!

Hope you have a great time!
blessings,
stacy

You received lots of great ideas. You can also buy the little inexpensive totes (Hobby Lobby) and then use fabric markers, beads, buttons and hot glue to draw/decorate on them. The girls can draw anything to do with the theme and use the bags for goodie bags to take home things after. This can also be done on inexpensive t-shirts if you want. Another idea might be for the girls to make little bracelets out of beads and find little dogs or moons or shoes as charms to include. For the sand art idea, how about making something that looks like sand that can be used later. Epsom Salt is really cheap. The girls can experiment with coloring it with plain old food coloring. You can mix it with the color and a few drops of fragrance oil and it will be come a bath salt. Hobby Lobby has the little glass or plastic decanters in various shapes that they can then fill colors of the salt that they make.

Have fun - we already have just thinking about it.

so excited about your party theme!!! I love the Wizard of Oz. First thing I thought about was using spray sidewalk chalk to make a brick road. You could even do it in the back yard on the patio. Use blue painters tape for the bricks lines, spray and remove blue tape. Find a pair of black and white striped socks ( hot topic, party store) and stuff them with filler or cotton batting and put shoes on them or if you want the curling up feet look you could use sand and it would hold better once you wound up the toes. A scavenger hunt for the find toto them would be fun. Stick notes around the house. Once they find toto it could be a box of black dog cookies or something like this. They are probably too old for bubbles...glinda comes down in a bubble. They could bob for apples, when the trees throw the apples at dorthy. The tin man could be as simple as gray construction paper. Have you seen the tin men made out of coffee cans? http://www.hobbylobby.com/project_inspiration/pdfprojects...
I think you could find a "how too" on you tube. A emerald city cake would be sooo cool. I have seen rock candy used. look up www.flickr.com for cake ideas If its an over night event you could rent "The return to Oz" most havent seen that one. There is also "The Wiz" and others like it. I think that the "Tin Man" is for a older crowd. Also you could primp them up as the part before they see the wizard and they get polished. Hang a sign outside that says " ring bell" or what ever it said on the Wizards door. The goodie bags could be little baskets...dollar store.

My daughter had a Wizard of Oz party last year for her 8th bday. It ended up being a sleep over but we played lots of games before they went to sleep. The girls played Twister--we had 2 sets of the game so that we could have 2 teams. It was pretty funny. We also played "Pass the lollipop"--our version of Pass the Potato. They girls really seemed to like Oz Pictionary--we came up with different characters and they had to draw them, etc. For snacks, we had lots of mini-food in rainbow colors--rainbow goldfish, jello jigglers, fruit, skittles, etc. We also used the skittles in a jar for a "Guess how many" game and it was the prize. There were also 2 kinds of punch--1 good witch punch/pink and 1 bad witch punch/green.

Have a great time!

For the witch under the house- just buy a pair of striped socks if you don't already have some. You can stuff them to look like legs and put a pair of black shoes on them, then tuck the ends under the house. You could shape the tin man out of foil over cardboard, mainly rectangle and triangle shaped, then draw or paint on his face. Use double-sided velcro to make the heart stick and restick in different spots, or you could draw one in sharpie on a large cookie sheet then let the heart have a magnet backing to stick to it. You could even buy a bale of hay and stuff it to look like the scarecrow is sitting in your front entry or porch.
It sounds like it will be fun regardless, good luck!

I'm an "OZ-ophile" and was very curious to see what ideas others had given you. Here are a few more;

BINGO using Skittles as markers (remember the slogan "Capture the Rainbow"?)

Making tissue paper "poppies" (layer 4-6 layers of red tissue paper, cut into 8" squares; fold accordian style; tie in the middle with twisties or straight floral wire (if you want a stem); peel the layers apart and fluff. If this doesn't make sense, look up how to make Mexican tissue flowers).

If the weather is good, a game of tag with one girl as the lion being "it" chasing all the Toto's. Can't figure out how to incorporate a Dorothy without some one getting a bloody nose.

If the parents are okay with the idea, get some temporary green hair gel to put a streak or two of color in their hair for their Emerald City make-over.

A previous suggestion mentioned yellow paint for the yellow brick road. There are spray paints on the market that are temporary (they may take a few weeks to disappear). They're made for marking gas and sewer lines.

Have fun.

The musical "Wicked" is coming to town. If it's on when you have the party, you could take the girls. I took my 11 year old granddaughter to it in New York last year and she can't stop talking about it, has the music on her ipod and constantly sings the songs.

I usually like the idea of having stations, to kinda cater to the attention spans of a number of guests. Maybe you could have a different part of the story (or different character's story) at each interactive "station". It adds more depth to the original story and allows the kids to move through the story interactively. Maybe each character can give some sort of treat or memento.

Hi S...

Try an Emerald City theme. Have type of food you can think of that can be food colored green or is naturally green. You can include the "making ready to meet the wizard" extras. The hair, the nails ect.

Let me know if that helps?

wow, fun! Just some ideas that jumped in my head as I was reading: you could turn the "where's Toto?" into a scavenger hunt with clues. You could make ruby slipper cookies for dessert with red frosting and red sugar and have the girls decorate as one of the stations. You could make a tin man out of boxes covered in foil or use a doll covered in foil depending on how big you want it. Fun fun fun... You could also do a trivia game with little treats about the movie. I bet the girls would find the history of the story interesting as well...

WHat about a tin man out of cans. Like veggie cans. I love the sock and black shoe idea!!! That is so cute! Sand art would be fun, but MESSY!!! You could make shoe cookies and toto cookies things like that and let the girls decorate them. You never get too old for that. My family still gets together and decorates cookies every Christmas!! Sounds like FUN!!! Good luck!

Put lollipops alongside the "Yellow Brick Road" or through out the front yard. You can play the Wizard Of Oz soundtrack for background music. You can get a toy hot air baloon and place it above the back yard door.

I have to say I love this idea. I didn't read the other post so if these are repeats sorry, how about a station to stuff the scarecrow, you could do something with the apples and maybe a scavenger hunt to find/rescue toto. I googled scavenger hunt on-line a couple of weeks ago and there were 2 sites I found that actually had steps/clues written out and I just used those. For the tin man could you assemble one using maybe cans, poster board or cylinder shaped boxes and then spray it silver?
The whole idea sounds fun, I'm sure the girls will have a great time! Good job MOM!

I did makeup and helped with props for Westlake production of Wizard of Oz. Get red and white striped socks, stuff with stuffing from Michaels, and add Ruby Slippers (Target). Put under house, and there you are. Party City has the Tin Man's heart and other props. We had to make the hourglass, as it is hard to find/very expensive. You can get green and silver makeup for the Witch and Tin Man at Backstage on Riverside. Have fun!
