My five months old daughter has very waxy ears. I don't use those Q-tips, instead, just after a bath I clean her ears with wet washcloat. The thing is, you can still see the wax in her ears... Any advice moms?

What can I do next?

My pediatrician told us to leave her ears alone at that stage. The wax actual protects the ears. You can over clean and open the ear up to infection or the need for tubes.

You can use a q-tip just inside the ear, not too far, but it will work better than just warm water and a wet wash cloth. One thing my mom did when I was younger was to mix peroxide (just a tiny bit) with lukewarm water. It would help bust up the wax and clean the area too.

wax is normal. do not stick ANYTHING in your infant's ear. and i mean nothing. next time you go to pediatrician tell him about the wax (though he/she should see it when checking ears). but again, never ever put anything in your child's ears. losing hearing is so common by doing it. good luck

there is no need to go and clean it. It is normal.
Our Pediatrician always said don't stick things in there... and just wipe the outer ear if you need to.
The wax is there for a reason and is healthy.
I have never cleaned my kids ears... ever. Our Pediatrician says that is great. And my kids ears are not dirty or yucky or full of gunk.
They have also never had any ear infections, at all, ever.

Hi, our pediatrician told us to use a dropper and put about a drop or two of baby oil in each each then get a wash cloth and wipe away the wax......works well :)

Dip your washcloth or Q-tip safe tip in hydrogen peroxide - the wax will wipe away.

I do use q-tips, but I don't stick them in past where I can see the wax. It the easiest way to get into the tiny area of an ear, you just need to be careful not to stick it into the ear canal.

If you're still opposed to q-tips, try rolling a tissue into a similar shape and use it to clean with, it will be softer...

My daughter always had a TON of wax in her ears that was very visible. Whenever I would take her to the ped's they would have to remove a lot of the wax because they couldn't see into her ears to check her out. They always told me that it was nothing to worry about and perfectly normal. They told me to NEVER stick anything in her ears or buy silly devices that will get the wax out. I always did just what you do, a wet washcloth. As my daughter got older she didn't like me to do it so much, so one day, I snuck in quickly and cleaned her ear, and then I showed her the wax on the washcloth and said "Eww, look how dirty your ears were!!" She loved it. So, even though it's kind of gross, she loves to check out the wash cloth now to see how much wax I got out. At least she still lets me clean her ears! She is now 2 and doesn't have nearly as much wax as she used to.

my son used to have really waxy ears as a baby too and our pediatrician told us not to worry about it...wax is protection for their ears, some just produce more....and my son's wax production leveled out after a time...get what you can and don't worry about the rest I say

Sweet Oil--warm it a bit and use an eye dropper to put a drop in her ears.

I would definitely leave it if you can ( it's really hard not to swipe it out! ) . It's serving a purpose and the method you are using now is what's recommended in our pediatricians office. Also, it's a myth that you shouldn't let water get in kids ears. Of course, you wouldn't want there to be a ton of water in their ear, but try to let a little dribble of water get down in there. It can clear out any lose wax and melt down some of the excess. As your little one turns into a bigger one, she can lay in the tub while she's playing and this will take care of it.

Good luck!

Hi again!! Q tips make safety swabs. You can't put them too far in the ear, but the tip goes into the canal just a bit to get that wax.

I agree with the "leave it alone" method.
Q-tips dipped in olive oil, nose syringe? Those can damage your little ones ears immensely!
The wax is there for a reason and when it gets to that outside inner bowl just keep doing what you're doing and wipe gently with a washcloth.

I use Q-tips, baby safety swabs dipped in olive oil to clean around the inside of the ear and only the opening of the canal. Works like magic.

The wax is supposed to be there; you're doing fine. I remember being a kid and my mom cleaning the wax DEEP in my ears out with a - get this - HAIRPIN!!!! YIKES! Thank goodness, nothing got punctured. Outside wax is ok to clean, and I would guess that your pedi would let you know if the inside wax was building up and the best way to take care of it :)

I was told that if you purchase one of the things you use to suck boogers out of their noses (for little ones) - but instead use in their ears, it helps suck out the wax...
