How Should I Handle This? UPDATED

UPDATE: I spoke with a very nice, very professional store manage who happily applied an additional 15% off my receipt. Some of you that said Target never does that, but maybe it was your approach. I was nice and not at all upset. Even if they said no, I wouldn't have gotten upset. So to anyone with a future issue, be sure you are speaking to a manager and be polite and reasonable.

Hello. This isn't a parenting question. I bought a Thomasville brand console table from Target. It was originally $169.99 and was on clearance for $118.99. Upon opening it my husband noticed that there is a through-and-through crack on the side on the part of the wood bar that is the front of the desk where there drawer slides in. The crack doesn't appear to affect the ability of the table top to support anything (the top holds 35lbs the drawer holds 10lbs), but may eventually have a problem holding in or holding up the drawer, but we have a way to prevent that if we keep it. My issue is that this was not one of those "As is" deals so I had no idea there was any damage. It was the last one there so rather than repackage it and take it back to the store I'd like to keep it, but would like an additional discount. How much should of an additional discount should I request?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It is not that I think Target is a flea market or "let's make a deal". The box was not torn or damaged in any manner and it had not been previously opened or returned. The reason I want an additional discount is because this table was not clearanced as a defective or damaged "as is" item because if it were there would have been a sticker on the box indicating that and in that case I probably would not have purchased it. Anyone the frequents Target knows that they clearance perfectly good items a lot even if there is no defect, which is one of the reasons I enjoy shopping there. The reason I'd rather keep the table it is because I like it-- it's perfect for my room---, it was the last one there and I went the whole deal to get it home and in the house and have already had to deal with a living room full of styrofoam flying about making it look as though it snowed. Since the table is for my bedroom the crack is something only myself and my husband would know about and we have a way to fix it and lessen the appearance. I could just take photos and video of it with my phone to show them which is what I'd rather do that cart it back to the store. Thank you for telling me that I do not have to repackage it though. I've never had a defective furniture piece from there so I didn't realize that. I will update once I have a solution.

You don't need to repackage it--take it back as is--out of the box. They will exchange it for another piece.

Target won't negotiate the price because of the damage. We have tried that before. If you really like the table and want to keep it, I'd try a few other options. If you have other Target locations near you, I'd call and ask if they have the desk. If they do, I'd simply exchange it at another location. You may also try calling Thomasville furniture. They may be able and willing to replace the broken piece. Your other option is to simply take it as is and hope the drawer holds up.

Sorry this isn't "Lets Make a Deal". Either you return it and get your money back or keep it. It its not a problem, why do you think you should receive an additional discount? Again, if it is damaged your choices are return or keep.

just return it! Why would you want to keep damaged goods that you've paid for?

EDIT: If you really like this table...then have your local store check other stores for it...or have them ship you a replacement that's not damaged!

At this point, you will probably not get anything off and are better off returning it and having the store find out if they can get ahold of one at another store or the warehouse and have it shipped to your door for free.

your options are to return it and get your money back, and take your chances trying to find another one somewhere, or deal with it. Target isn't going to negotiate with you.

Welcome to Mamapedia!!

Target doesn't work that way. You take it back and get your money back.
Or you deal with it. Once it leaves the store, Target doesn't know what has happened to it - you could've caused the damage - they don't know that.

Call around to other Target stores and see if they have the desk.

Most large stores like Target can turn the table back to the manufacturer and get full price for it so they won't give you more discount. They may have had issues with this table before, someone else might have bought it and found the same issue then returned it.

I would say you have every right to call the store and find out what their policy is on clearance items. Most larger stores have a sign on the wall of the service desk detailing their return policy.

Walmart has a no return policy on a lot of things that I did not know. I would have never imagined a bike was non returnable but my grandson got stuck with a bike that was too small a year ago for Christmas. He needed at least a 14" and got a 12". I took it back, it still had the plastic around the tires and they refused to take it back due to their return policy that is posted on the wall above the service desk. He got a 16" this year, YEAH!!!

But anyway, depending on their return policy I would call and ask specifically about this issue and if possible get a different table. If they don't have any more then you can decide if you want to take a chance or do some other table.

Honestly, I would return it. Go and find somehting else you like more--- As someone who worked in retail, I can tell you, you won't get more than 10-20% off for the damages. 10% is standard-but they may go a little more depending on the damage.

It never hurts to ask though--good luck!

The store will most likely not offer any further discount without seeing the damage you describe. It may have been on sale at Target because it was a second to begin with. I would not expect any further discount unless you are ready to take the piece back to Target for inspection.

Blessings...

I would return the item and get my money back. Yes it was on clearance for a reason. Try to find another Target that might have one to replace it. Why would you knowingly want something broke in your home that you took out the sealed box *I hope it was sealed* and show it off? It is the principle that you bought a faulty item. My husband always checks the box for tears and holes before we buy a sale item.

Good luck to you.
