How Often Does Your Young Child Wear an Item of Clothes?

Hi Moms,

I am not talking about babies or sweaty teenagers here. How often does your child (who is potty trained) wear a shirt or pants before you toss it in the wash, assuming it's not visibly soiled or smelly. I usually let him wear his clothes about 2 times before washing them. Pajamas I let him wear the same pair for a week. Even then they still seem "clean" but I wash them anyway. If they are worn strictly at home, I might let him wear the same clothes 3 times.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

For those that wash after every wear, regardless of clean or dirty...why? Do you think it has germs?

I have three filthy little boys. There is no way that they could wear anything twice without washing. I'd be done for child neglect. Even their school uniform sweaters which are heavy wool stuff. I always hope to get away with not washing them everytime, but it's rare.

My own stuff I will wear twice if it has an airing and is not sweaty or dirty in any way (except underwear - wear once then wash).

We're in the minority but I'm like you. I am big on changing underwear at least every day if not more but otherwise, it depends on where they've worn it, if it shows dirt etc. It's not a matter of making less work (I don't do most of our laundry). It's about saving water and therefore the environment, saving money and making clothes last longer as well as our washer and dryer.

Once.

Ditto Pjs. In the morning off they strip and into the hamper. At bathtime, the clothes go in.

I split laundry by having 1 hamper for each person, 1 for dry cleaning, and 1 for bleach. From crawling onward, kiddo would "help" with the laundry (dropping the clothes in, pouring soap, banging the lid closed). At 2 he started doing his own clothes (I'd still have to lift him up). In general, he'd wash his clothes 1-2x per week. Then (because I neither use hangers nor fold, but have rows of hooks), he'd take his clothes and hang them up where they belong.

I only add this because I've often gotten the "But that's so much extra work!" from people who launder less often. It's not, because he did most of it himself from 2-4, and ALL of it as soon as he got tall enough to cycle the clothes at age 4. He's 10, now, and I only help him out to be nice, like when he's sick.

Ditto, he washes his sheets, pillowcases, etc. once a week, along with his towels.

I wash everything after one use because i catch my kids using their clothes for napkins or snot rags. They play hard and touch things that are just ick. Even sitting at a restaurant, movie theater, anywhere public, you just don't know what was on those seats. So thats why, its the eww factor.

Underwear gets changed every day - sometimes twice a day if they happen to get some "skid marks" in them, or it's after a bath (new clean ones, but then we keep them on the next day if they are still clean). Socks only get worn once too.

DD usually gets dirty enough playing outside at day care to warrant things only getting worn once. Some things can get worn twice if they stay clean. I am not sending my child to day care or school with visibly stained or dirty clothing.

Usually we change pajamas every 2 to 3 days, although sometimes DD decides she wants a new pair every night! She definitely gets fresh clean ones after a bath, same as underpants.

My kids are never clean long enough to get more than 1 day's worth out of it. When I was a kid my mom had a rule that we had to wear our clothes 2 days, even if we spilled on them. Wow, did THAT ever teach us to be careful with our clothes! With 5 kids in our family there was WAY too much laundry for us to be careless with our clothes.

If it's not soiled, I try to have my son wear it again. That said, we've instilled a good habit of 'take your clothes to the washing' at the end of the day, so we often end up washing it after one wear. Plus, my husband has NO discernment about clean or dirty and will throw everything in the wash. I have to lobby to get things worn twice around here, come to think of it!

Oh, and we sometimes do tees and shorts as pjs, and then he just wears them the next day. Does that count as two wearings?;)

Same, if not smelly or visibly soiled he can wear them 2 days. Jammies 3 or 4 nights, though they don't get dirty, but because he has a few pair so can change them, And as another mama said, if he wears a t-shirt and shorts to bed he wears those as his clothes the next day.

The reason I wash her dirty clothes every day? They stink. I also hate the feel of dirty dusty clothing. I also do not want her sitting in my car with filthy clothes or on my furniture.

She needs to learn about hygiene. It is a courtesy to herself and others to not smell. Kids wipe their hands, on their clothes, wipe their noses, lean against gross stuff. Spill food, drinks etc.. on the clothing.

Just because she is a child, does not mean she does not deserve to look her best each day. I want her to know we all want to look our best, because when you feel good about yourself, you feel good about others.

It is too hot here, we sweat just walking to and from the car.
all the children that play outside, need to have their clothes washed after each wearing..

Since our child was in daycare, they played outside a lot. Sand box, pebble playground, even in elementary school, they run track every day.

Even in the winter, our daughter played outside in the morning and then the afternoon so her clothes had to be washed.

I bathed her every night, so she could wear her pj for about 4 nights, but she is like me and gets hot at nights, so it depended on how sweaty she seemed in the morning.

My kids change clothes after every day wear. If they have worn something to say church for only a few hours and it doesn't have any soiled spots then I will hang them back up or fold to wear another day. Like others have said my kids sweat or drop food on themselves, so we change every day.
I like the idea of wearing pajamas more than once per week.

Most of the time, my kids only wear stuff once. Even if they are clean-ish, they are usually dirtier than my clothes that I certainly don't wash mine every time I wear them! Sometimes I reuse outfits for two times, but even in that case it's usually just one part of the outfit. If my kids have hung out at home all day, which is rare, then I do reuse those outfits.

Pajamas are different I think, those get changed about once a week.

PJ's a week. Most other things once, simply because they do get dirty. Every once in a while she still has a clean shirt or pants on at the end of the day I will let her wear it again.
I think it's ridiculous to wash things just because... if it's not dirty it isn't washed in our house...however for my 4 year old, usually her clothes NEED washing at the end of the day.

I am on *exactly* the same page. We change shirts every day, pants every other day (well, okay, we've been known to change underwear and get back into the same pants or shorts), PJs once a week. Exceptions, of course, for food spills, random streaks of dirt, etc. This is such a routine with us, I don't know how I'm going to break it to him that, come puberty, everything's gotta be changed every day.

My daughter will be 6 and she puts her clothes in the hamper after each wear. Living in Florida she gets sweaty and she sometimes spills stuff. Since she gets a shower every night so I will let her wear her nightgown two nights in a row.

I don't worry about germs they are everywhere and most are good. It's just that it gets so hot here and in the winter months she gets dirty playing in the playground at school.

My kids go to daycare so their clothes get washed after 1 wear because who knows what they get on them and what they can carry around with them. Pajamas usually are worn for about 3 nights. Depends on if they sweat in them or not. If they sweat in them then they get washed or if bathtime is skipped they have a new pair the next night. It really depends on how clean the kids are. If the kids look and smell clean the clothes can be worn again. If they look or smell dirty they are washed.

my son is 5 and i don't think i've ever taken an article of clothing off him that looked/smelled/felt "clean" lol. ok MAYBE that's an exaggeration....but we have had record highs here (over 100 for like 20 some days) this summer so it's not really feasible to re-wear clothes. now he just wears a pair of shorts and/or a t-shirt to bed, sometimes what he wore that day if it looks clean. we haven't done pj's for awhile - maybe when it gets cooler again. but as dirty as his daytime clothes get i can't even consider him wearing anything twice. even on days he doesn't go outside there is paint or food or SOMETHING on them, not always but most of the time. so it's just habit. now i do admit, there was one weekend he didn't change clothes from Friday morning (before preschool), till sunday morning (before church). but that was because we didn't go anywhere and i was being SUPERBLY lazy. course then you have to wash the bedding lol.

My DD's shirts get washed every day. She sweats quite a bit, so even if it *looks* clean, it's still pretty gross. Her pants, (she is daytime potty trained...) I will let her wear 2-3 times if they still look clean.

She doesn't wear pajamas, just a pull-up to sleep... so that's a moot point. :)

Yep, we live in a hot humid area of the country, and even if there was no visible "dirt" on them (which usually there was SOMETHING), they still got washed after a day of wear. Kids sweat. And it doesn't smell nice when they aren't a baby.
I distinctly remember when my son was about 3, realizing that he no longer had a baby smell. That his hair would actually STINK from sweat if he went more than 36 hours or so without a bath. Ugh.

PJ's, yes, they could wear them several days without washing. Nowadays I wish they would, but my daughter grabs a fresh set every night. She's a lot like her Daddy when it comes to changing clothes.

In the summer, usually clothes get washed after each wear. It is so hot here (111 degrees today!) that you can't help but sweat if you are outside, even if it's just for a little bit. I'd let him wear pants/shorts more than once, but he gets so dirty from the playground that it's a lost cause. In the other seasons, he usually gets a couple of wears out of his clothes, unless it's been a rough day at the playground. Pajamas can go a week or so. New underwear every day. Same with socks if they get worn.

My older son wears jeans twice before washing unless they are visibly soiled. I cannot get him to put his jammies back in the drawer after he wears them, he always puts them in the hamper, but I would be thrilled if he would wear them two or three times. Shirts pretty much always have something on them, they get washed after each wear.
