How Many Times Do You Wear an Article of Clothing Before Cleaning?

And if you wear an article more than once before it goes in the washer, how do you remember how often you've worn it? I've been shooting for cleaning after 2 wears but always forget which items I wore when. lol. Thanks!
I mostly only wash an item of clothing if it appears soiled or has body odor. No need to know how many times I've worn it. If it appears clean it's still wearable. The nose test tells all.
Now that it's winter I wear jeans and shirt for a week before thinking I need to wash them. But then, at my age, I don't sweat as much and my sweat is less odoriferous. One advantage of being a senior.
When I was working and wore uniforms that needed to be dry cleaned, I wore the pants for 2-3 weeks. They were dark green. I wore the shirt for a week or longer unless it began to smell or I spilled something on it. I did wear an undershirt which helped them to stay clean longer. In the winter I could wear them longer.

It depends on the article of clothing and what I was doing while wearing it.
My work clothes I usually wear 2 or 3 times. Yes, it can be hard to remember. I have a somewhat type of system by where I hang them in the closet. You can usually give them the smell test.
I usually go thru 2 sets of pj's a week.
Also, after work, I have a few sweat pants and sweat shirts that I put on. Sometimes I wear these all week. However, in the rare event that I do some heavy cleaning, spill something, or do yard work then it's in the laundry.

Ohhh, I love this question! It gets my OCD juices flowing! I love having "systems" for all sorts of things, including how to remember when I've worn an article of clothing once but want to wear it again. I hang most of my stuff up in the closet (particularly for my system). When I have worn a shirt and it's not dirty from the one wear I hang it back up but put the hanger in backwards. All the forward hangers are clean, backward have been worn once or twice. I stack my jeans on a shelf in my closet and when I've worn a pair I put them in "backwards" too - meaning, the folded part faces in. I do the same with my stack of sweater. If the folded over part is facing inside the closet, then it's been worn before!
OK, is there something wrong with me????

Jeans I will wear three or four times without washing.
Bras, two or three, depending on how much I sweat.
PJ's a week.
Shirts, depends on if they smell.
We reuse bath towels until they start to smell funky.
Only thing that definitely gets changed every day is panties.

I find that people are obsessed with doing laundry. Unless you have an allergy to pollen or dust or something like that and bath on a regular basis, you really don't need to wash after 1 wear unless its socks or underwear. And even in those cases sometimes I will wear the same socks for a couple days. They never smell. We wear our clothes several times before washing, at least 2 and sometimes 4 or 5. How do we remember? They are smelly or look not quite right. As a stay at home mom, sometimes I will put the outfit aside and wear it a few times a week. Pajamas I usually change once a week.

I was doing laundry all the time but now, well several reasons, my son moved back (lots of laundry there-he does that) gas and water and even soap cost a lot and quite frankly sometimes clothes are not really that dirty. Now I smell them yup, all sorts of places and look for stains. Always clean underwear. The black jeans have been repeated. And armpit smells, eeeuuuu. Ok that's my answerLOL

I wish I had a great system. I wash things based on the smell test. I'm lazy...er, concerned about the environment. I just mentioned my relaxed laundry standards to some friends, and they were visibly disgusted. Oops. On average, that means shirts gets worn once aaaallll day and pants worn two or three times, depending on what we're doing. I promise, underwear is one and done. The problem for me (aside from my disgusted friends) is the stuff that is worn for only an hour or two, like for church. Do I really need to wash that dry-clean-only skirt or heavy sweater because I wore it for a couple of hours? But once something is worn, I can't put it back in the closet/drawers with all the clean clothes. Because that would be gross...duh. Instead it goes into this interstitial staging hell, pretty much like laundry purgatory. Best case scenario, I'll think to paw through this pile and wear it enough so that it finally fails the smell test and attains life anew as clean laundry. But most usually what happens is that it either stays in the purgatory basket forever or I get so tired of looking at it that I wash it so I can put it away after a couple (or four) months. Guess how many purgatory baskets we have.
It's very difficult to be me. At least I wasn't dumb enough to marry me or have me as a mom. :)

I usually wear things a few times before I wash them.
If I'm working in the garden or doing anything that gets me dirty and/or sweaty, the clothes go right in the wash (and me in the shower).
In my college days I use to have to wash things after going to a bar or disco - the smoke smell would just cling to the clothes and my hair.
My sister went through a phase in her teens where she'd have to try on 3 or 4 outfits from her closet before going out Every Day and from just trying on clothes for a few minutes she'd throw them in the wash.
She was costing our Mom an arm and a leg in water and detergent and her clothes wore out quickly from all the washer/dryer wear and tear.

Jeans-- up to three or four days. Sweatshirts/fleeces get washed weekly or as needed.
Bras can go for two or three days, tops.
Anything else, one wear.

Like momof2girls said, smell test. <3 Saves water to re-wear things that don't smell and have no visible signs of wear (like spills or dirt). Our water bill is outrageous yet our water company compliments us on our water conservation. It doesn't make sense. We save so much, use so little but pay so much more than the average.
We use less than a typical family of three yet get billed more than my cousins family of six! (They don't live here though.) My city keeps voting for rate hikes year after year. It's absurd and frustrating so yea, we re-wear clothing and subscribe to the motto: "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." to save water on flushing. We also have a timer in the bathroom to help us stick to the five minute shower.
I've got the fastest armpit shave in the west.
Sorry for the detour. Water use from laundry is one of those things that gets me going.

I wear my jeans at least a week before washing, sometimes longer.. Sweaters if they smell or are soiled. T-shirts socks and undies go in the hamper daily. PJ's I wear 3-4 days. For the most part, I am exactly like Sherri G, when they are soiled or smell and they don't go back in the drawer, they hang separately. I remember, based on the fact that I'm wearing them daily, like the jeans, or when I laundered the sweater last.

jeans- often. up to a week. bras, a few days unless i do something strenuous. running gear, panties, socks, t-shirts in summer- once. sweatshirts and sweaters- several times.
i've been doing my dad's laundry for him for the last month, and was horrified when he told me he re-wears his five favorite red collared shirts under sweaters all winter long, and washes them all in the spring. at my shocked look he protested 'but i don't sweat any more!'
i begged him not to become one of 'those' old guys. my FIL who used to be so dapper is now stubbornly wedded to his nasty t-shirts and stained pants.
is it inevitable????

I am kinda picky about that actually. Most everything I wash after one wearing. The only exception I can think of is pajamas that I do wear a few times between washings - I take bath at night so I am always clean when I put them on... And yes, I do laundry most every day :)

Once. No exceptions. Even pajamas.
I used to wear my pajamas a few days before washing them before I had kids and then one day I got a really good wiff of them and realized that they did in fact smell after a couple days. I shower every single day, use deoderant etc and they still smelled. Maybe because I don't wear any perfume to mask the funk. I hate perfume. That grossed me out and was the end of that. Then of course I had kids and was getting spit up on, breasts leaking at night and all that other fun stuff and there was no way a pair would last me more than one night, if it even lasted the whole night at all LOL
Only types of things that don't get cleaned after each wearing is jackets, hats, scarves etc so long as nothing gets on them. But I do cycle through them and wash them if they are in the car a lot and things are getting put in and taken out a lot along with them or they have been worn heavily during an activity.

I wash clothes when they are dirty, that is, if they smell or are visibly soiled. Sometimes my jeans are still clean, but they are kind of bagged out, so they will get washed just to get them back in shape. I shower daily, and change socks and underwear daily. I'm not a very sweaty person, but I wear anti-persperant. I don't have a dirty job. I do put on my "grubby" clothes for things like gardening or heavy housework, and I wear workout gear for the gym. I wear work clothes for half a day, and change when I get home. So, it doesn't really matter how many times I've worn it, but whether or not it is dirty. If I wear it it gets hung on a coat hook, not put back in the drawer or closet. I try to cycle through the stuff on the coat hook before dirtying too much else, but I don't wear the same outfit twice in a row around the same people.

First, I can't imagine putting an article of clothing I've worn back into my closet or dresser. Even if I couldn't smell it, I'm sure the smell would be there.
I will occasionally wear a sweater...the type that goes OVER my clothes, just to keep my warm...for two days before washing, because it's not actually touching my body.
I don't wash my bra every day, because I can't afford new ones all the time.
I don't know if I'm in the minority here, but I can't imagine having to smell my clothes to see if they are clean enough to wear. I KNOW they are all clean enough to wear, because anything in my closet or dresser has been washed. :) ;)

Depends on what I did in it and what the item is. I usually can't bring myself to wear a shirt more than once, and def. change underwear, but I'll wear a hoodie multiple times or jeans 2 or 3 times. I put them in another place in my room so I know they are "worn once".
I have found that our HE washer saves us a lot of water - both by being efficient and sensing how much (or little) water to use so I can do just the things I need and not a full load.

Depends on the item. Jeans go easily a week without washing unless they are dirty. Shirts and underwear after one wear. Coats, jackets and other outerwear get washed when they are dirty only - too much washing really isn't good for them. PJ's - I don't wear any, DD's go for 2 or 3 nights depending on whether she has breakfast in them.

I don't really count. It's just a matter of what I did in it or where I went. If it got visibly dirty or I know I got sweaty in it - then I wash it. If not, I'll wear it again. Pants & jeans can be worn several times, unless I've been somewhere very public like a theme park or restaurant, etc because I feel like it's covered in public germs. But, undergarments get washed after one time. And PJs, pretty much once a week.
My kids tend to wash more often, but I'm trying to teach them that it's wasteful and wears the clothes out more, so try to wear more than once - especially the sweaters and jeans, etc.

I always wash after wearing once. My daughter takes it to the extreme and changes at least twice a day. My new rule is that something must be worn for at least 8 hours before being put in the laundry unless obviously soiled. I do two loads of laundry each day though.

In general, anyway.
We're active people (in general, anyway;). We get dirty. We clean up.
Bathing twice a day, launder clothes after they're worn, sheets & towels once a week.
There are always exceptions... But just as our rule of thumb: Get Dirty & Get Clean :).
_______
((Clothing items washed less frequently: jackets & coats, every 3 months. Shoes as needed -couple times a year-, hats & gloves & scarves weekly. Zip off couch cushions every 6 weeks, down cushions & down comforters every 3 months.))

I have 4 kids and I do laundry daily to keep up.....after working and homeschooling them. LOL
