Hello Mama's

I need help on what to charge someone for shredding papers 8 to 10 boxes (file box size). I will be shredding at my home and at my leisure and this could turn into something consistant. Do I charge per box or the time it takes to complete the job and how much?

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you Mama's for all of your suggestions. I took your advice by calling some professional shredders and the prices varied. I've decided $15.00 per box and I will recycle the shred.
Again thanks for all of the responses.

I would charge by the box. Not sure how much to tell you but I know we have a company that comes to our office and empties our huge shred bins once a month and it costs us around $100. If I were you, I'd try to find something profitable to do with all that shredded paper. See if you can profit on the back end, as well.

OH MY WORD!! Small world!! I graduated UHS in '84! Lived on 13th between San Antonio and Mountain!!! LOL!!!

I don't know what size box you are shredding. (edit you say file - I'm thinking "bankers box).

I don't know how "heavy duty" your shredder is. I know I did this for my friend who moved to CA last year and she paid me per box - I think it was $25 per box - there was a LOT of boxes..they were the bankers boxes. I had to keep a blow dryer handy to cool it off.

We took the shredded paper to the recycling center here so they didn't just go in the trash.

I would charge by the box since you'll be doing it at your leisure. This would make it simpler. You won't have to keep track of your time. I don't know how much would be reasonable, however.

I agree with Marda, but then you have to define what size a box is... what if someone brings in a huge box, but only has one of them, or they stuff the box cray full? Any way you can charge by weight?

*Okay... I obviously skipped over the part where you said file box sized ;)

How long does it take to do one box if you continually did it? One hour?... so $10 a box? I have no idea. I know there are companies that provide this, I would call and ask for rates.

Call a professional shredder in your area and ask what they charge. I am thinking they might charge by the pound??--Just a guess.

Check yelp to price compare. I think we just paid $7 or $8 per box? But it was a discounted rate since there were more than 50. $10 sounds reasonable but won't be the cheapest option. Definitely recycle to get a little extra money. Good luck!

I'd charge per box, but have no clue what rate to charge--probably price is based on the volume of the box to account for boxes of various sizes.

Why by the box? Because the time it takes could vary greatly depending upon your interruptions, paper jams, shredding capacity--How many sheets can your shredder handle at once? As a customer, I'd be really frustrated if I got an out-of-the-blue bill for something I expected to be like $10-20.

I'd go with the time it takes and charge based on minimum wage in your state... which I just realized is my state (and I lived in Upland until 2009, LOL). So, $8 an hour or $2 for every 15 minutes or portion thereof.
