I am going to hire a company named, Hercules, for a couple of repair works in my house. It is charging me $88 for an hr and it looks pretty high to me. Since they are licenced, insured and bounded, I just accepted the proposal but now am double minded. Should i cancel the proposal or keep it? I have two days time to decide. So i want your suggestions on this issue. Please help me.
Yesterday i sent the mail to this company, and they put me off the shcedule as per my request. According to them the job will take 7hrs to complete and they gave me $619 estimate minus $100 cupon. The work that needs to be done is putting trimming around laminated wooden floor that is half done by some handyman who left the work when he could not figure out how to fix an angle shape trimming in transition area. Except that there are two celing fans to be fixed. This much work, and $519 ? It rang the bells, and you were the only hope in despair. Am still looking for a good handyman who serves in Peoria or west vallley.

What can I do next?

I checked out Hercules, but decided against using them when they told me their appraisals are only free if you choose them to do the work, otherwise they charge for an estimate. I've used Handyman Connection for years and had them to all sorts of things around my home and have been extremely pleased with their work and pricing. They don't charge per hour, but give you an estimate based on the actual work and that's all you pay, no matter how long a job takes. The last time I had them come out, the job took the guy about 3 hours longer than he had planned and I never paid an extra penny.

I'm not sure about pricing, but you mention they are licensed and bonded...what about insured? You can also check out any licensed contractor in Arizona by going to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors website. You would see there if there have been any complaints about them. I'm sure there is probably a similar website in all states.

His price as a handyman is high - also, if the only price you agreed upon was his hourly rate, there is no incentive for him to complete the job in a timely manner. The longer he drags the job out, the more he gets paid.

I would cancel the proposal and review the Arizona Registrar of Contractors for reputable contractors. Any good contractor or handyman should give you a proposal with a breakdown of costs - materials, labor and the time needed to complete the job. The proposal should reflect the total cost of the job, not just an hourly rate.

Lastly, interview and get bids from more than just one handyman or contractor. That in itself will give you an idea of what the going rate is. Then decide from that.

Good luck,

L.

That sounds like way to much especially for a handyman.
