How Many Hours of TV per Day?

The other post about fav TV shows got me thinking.....After seeing the lists of everyone's fav shows I realized I didn't even know what half of them were! I know most of us are moms on here, not single women, so how do you have time to watch TV?! Serious question!

I work 7:30-5, come home, try to get a quick run in, start dinner, we eat around 6, then it is baths, homework, a little play time with the kids, bed at 8:30 for kids, and that is when I start laundry, make lunches, etc. I finally fall on the couch around 9:30 and then I am in bed around 10:15. So I get MAYBE 45 min of tv, but usually 20 min of that is spent on the internet planning our weekly menu or practices, etc. When do you find time for TV watching? Even if I dvr'd the shows I wouldn't have time to watch them! I need more idiot tube in my life.....I need to relax!!

What can I do next?

I watch maybe 45 minutes a day. Usually long enough to move laundry from the wash into the dryer before heading to bed.

I do my best not to get involved in any shows due to lack of time but I make time for a couple that I like.

I try to watch things like the Million Dollar Matchmaker and anything that I can watch/listen to while doing other things (like HGTV).

You're better off taking care of life rather than watching too much TV. :) You can watch more when the kids grow up. If they have TVs then!!!

I'm with you!

We actually turn the t.v. on right before my son goes to bed. He likes to veg out with my husband watch an episode of Animaniacs before they read a story at night. Both kids are in bed and asleep by 8:30 then it's "second shift" time for us... showers, lunches made, dishes done, another load of laundry... by the time we sit down to watch something, it's usually 9:30.

At that point, we will zip through something on the DVR and head to bed around 10:15-10:30.

No time for t.v. Besides, we just moved to FL and being able to run outside and let the kids play outdoors is just too tempting to resort to television!!!

Lol! I know exactly what you mean. I have a dvr which records the shows, so after mine go to bed(actually falls asleep about 9) I listen/watch the shows while I'm doing other things. It really helps that I can fast forward through the comercials.

In my case the truth is I don't work as many hours as you, I don't spend time on the computer meal planning, I do laundry once a week on the weekend in a flurry of loads, catching a show in between swapping, and I average about six hours of sleep a night due to staying up later than I should to watch something. My life is fairly unscheduled, I only have one kid and she knows how to entertain herself for enough time to allow watch some TV on the weekends. We don't have enough money to go out to do things so the time we would spend out and about is instead spent catching a show on hulu or Netflix. And that's how I keep up with my favorite shows. I prioritize them over other things. Should I? "Answer not clear. Ask again later." says my magic 8 ball.

I DVR everything! So I never watch commercials (so a 1 hour show, really is only 40 minutes without commercials)... My son goes to bed at 8. My husband and I go to bed at 10:30.... With no commercials, I can watch 2-3( one) hour shows.... Some people read, I decompress and watch my guilty pleasures :)
I'm a SAHM, so I get all my chores done during the day.

That is during the week.. On the weekends, we are always out and about doing family things. So we don't watch a lot of tv on the weekends.

As a SAHM I have it on in the background a lot (mostly cooking shows and HGTV during the day) but I only really WATCH it while I'm working in the kitchen or folding laundry, because those are the only times I'm actually in front of it.
We have a DVR and certain shows we record so my husband and I watch about an hour to an hour and a half at night, between 9 and 10:30, after the kids are in bed. That's our "couple" time. My girls watch their shows for about an hour after dinner and before bed (they are teenagers so we have very few TV shows in common these days!)
I can't WAIT for Mad Men to start up again this weekend, whoo hoo!!!

I have the same schedule as you for the most part and my husband and I watch a show together maybe once or twice a week at 10pm...half the time I'm folding laundry for a few minutes into the show too. Sometimes we stay up until midnight if we want to watch two. Hurts the next day, but it's the only time to watch. On Friday, sometimes I'll announce that I'm watching my mystery (dateline) at 9pm and I'll work to get the kids to bed on time so I can relax. I try not to have laundry and all of that to worry about on Friday night. By then I need to zone out. It's great to have limited time for TV, but sometimes you just want to relax and be entertained.

I work from home and most of my job is data entry type stuff, so I will have the tv on or music on, it helps keep me awake. So I might "watch" an hour or 2 while I do data entry. Other than that, we will usually watch a movie on the weekend and then our favorite shows usually air Sunday nights so we will watch 1-2 hours then. So, about 2 hours daily.
I don't think I have ever not multi tasked while watching tv! Otherwise I would go nuts. I am either working on the computer, meal planning, crocheting etc. I suck at "relaxing"!

I watch TV when my daughter takes a nap and then after the kids go to bed. I stay up late (about midnight) so that I can watch my shows. I am up at 6:30 to get my two older boys out the door for school and I may grab a show before my daughter wakes up.
I don't watch TV on the weekends until everyone is in bed.
I also DVR everything, since we are usually pretty busy, so I can skip commercials. Like someone else said, makes everything much faster!

Are you saying that you wish you had more time to watch? Or that you are glad you don't have time to watch?

I watch sports. Alot of it. Mostly Houston sports and usually during the evening. I was up until about 10:30p watching the Texas Rangers beat the Astros into the ground last night :( At least Darvish didn't get his no-hitter :)

I usually watch an hour a day, after the kids go to bed, from 10:00 to 11:00pm. I PVR, so I only watch the shows I want to watch, not just random viewing. I only work part time, so I get most of most of the housework done while the kids are at school. The odd time I stay in for the evening I might watch two or three shows in a row to catch up. TV relaxes me because I do not need to put any thought into it.

I am home full time and my kids are gone at school til 3pm each day. I still don't find time to watch tv. Most days the tv doesn't even get turned on and if it does it is for my kids.

We all have our own way to relax or veg out. Ours just isn't in front of the boob tube. The last show we got into was Seinfeld...oh wow that was a long time ago.

I am not up with pop culture and what is current on tv. We don't have a dvr...so maybe that is what keeps us from seeing shows too. If we are not available when it is on tv...we miss it. Wow..old school!

We tend to use the tv for movies on the weekends...or sometimes during the week we will pop popcorn and watch a movie together.

In the evenings we end up talking, reading, or finishing up some things around the house. The tv has really just turned into a piece of furniture in our home.

I'm a SAHM, so I know if I had to be getting up to go to the office every day, I probably couldn't handle staying up late to catch my shows. I make lunches in the morning (just have 1 kid in school right now); laundry I can do during the daytime; and pretty much everything else gets done during the day, except for dishes, which are mostly done in the day and then I just have my pots and pans to do at night. When I was working (and only had 1 kid), I NEVER watched tv--just the news.

The shows I watch rarely run during the same seasons.

The Walking Dead just ended its 3rd season
Game of Thrones just started its 3rd season
Downton Abbey ended its season a few weeks ago
*those are all on Sunday nights - 1 of only 2 nights/week that I watch with my husband

Monday nights is "Revolution," but I rarely watch it at the time--I watch it on OnDemand

Tuesday - I don't really have a set show
Weds - The only set show is "The Americans" which comes on pretty late
Thurs - no set show - may or may not watch "Grey's Anatomy"

Friday nights we have been watching Spartacus, but after that's done (series finale coming up next month), we won't have a replacement show

Saturday - no set show--might catch some "SNL" but it isn't a big deal if I miss it

ETA: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I fold my laundry while watching tv--the best place to fold since I can lay it all out on the sofa to sort the stacks.

Our TV's are on all the time and we do watch some shows together. My granddaughter loves Castle and it's our "secret" time away from everyone else. I watch while I'm cooking, doing laundry, sewing, etc....our house is pretty open so I can watch from 90% of the places I do stuff.

I DVR everything. And my kids are 14 and almost 11. So they don't require me to be with them all the time. They amuse themselves when we are actually home. My oldest helps quite a bit with house work and meals. My youngest does some house work but is not home much during the week as his is at the gym three days a week for three hours a night. So when he comes home its dinner a little tv or game or homework and bed. His teachers send home their homework for the week on Friday and it's due Thursday and Friday. So he's got a while to work on it. But I watch some tv when they are watching stuff in the other room or when they go to sleep. My youngest goes to bed at 9:30 and my oldest will usually come in and watch stuff with me till it's time for him to go to bed. Granted I don't get to sleep until 11 or 12 so I watch stuff while I am winding down. When the kids where younger it was a lot harder!

hmmm every day is different

Monday-work until 5, get Emmy, quick dinner, piano lesson for her, homework, snack while she watches 20 minutes of a show while i clean up or snuggle with her and then she goes to bed at 8:30 and then it depends how long i can stay awake. sometimes 2 hours of tv sometimes 20 minutes

Tuesday same thing but swap piano for dance

wed- no lessons woohoo so we will either play board games or now that the weather is nice I’m planning on grilling and then taking her to ride her bike and then bath and bed and then i'll probably fall asleep early

Thursdays i only have Emmy until 7pm but then we go out so no tv time
Friday night is game, popcorn, and movie night, so we watch a movie together and then it depnds how tired i am

Saturday no time- i have Emmy until 7pm and thn we go out
Sunday i don’t have Emmy so sometimes i'll be a bum and watch a good 3 hours of tv

It really depends on what day of the week it is.

Mondays and Tuesdays we get an hour and a half. Home at about 4:30-5, kids are already playing outside, make dinner, eat dinner, clean up. We watch Wheel of Fortune, The Voice and DWTS (switching back and forth, because we're not cool enough to have cable or a DVR) with the kids.

Weds: No TV. Home about the same time, dinner, off to church.

Thurs: Depends upon what time my volleyball game is. Usually we don't watch TV.

Friday is Family Night. We have ice cream and pizza for dinner, make popcorn, play games and watch a movie. Usually about an hour and a half of screen time.

Saturday....depends on how nice the day is, how much we need to get done. Hubs and I might watch something on Netflix or Redbox a grownup movie.

Sunday....It's really based on season. We love Downton Abbey and watch that. About 1-2 hours.

I slept less than you (when I had my son full time).

4-5 hours a night = a lot more me-time.
Sometimes that's a few hours of favShows, or reading, or writing, or photo editing, or calling friends (different time zones), or studying, or gym, or, or, or.

Now that Im divorced, I have ridiculous spare time.

LOL... So there are 2 options (less sleep & split custody) you'll probably be glad not to take up!!!

The only show I watch every week is The Walking Dead and I usually record it on the DVR and watch the next day while my daughter is in school (It’s only an hour long). If I get time during the week I will put something on but I never really get a chance to just sit and watch. If I do get time I am thankful for the "on demand" so that I can find something I like.
