N.S.
We have netflix and have watched many of this year's Xmas shows on DVD or on Instant Play.
Commercials are horrible with prescription drugs and sexual content. I hate them--and I used to be in advertising!
Why not buy the dvd of classic Christmas shows and spare our children the corrupted commercials of this society? Hubby keeps wanting me to DVR them but I don't want them to be exposed to the commercials.....your thoughts.....
Fast forwarding is a problem when you are letting them watch the special so you can get something done......
We as a family appreciate the uninterpreted time to actually watch and discuss a show.
Have you watched the commercials today, they are not usually appropriate for children under five and I have three kids five and under. That is why I get so upset.....

Why can't you fast forward through the commercials? That's the glory of being able to record things on TV. Then you save the money of having to buy an overpriced holiday dvd that is shown on TV (which you're already paying for).
Happy Holidays!
Not exactly your issue but just my 2 cents and a little rant of my own on this issue. I remember how every year Sound of Music would be on in the Spring and Wizard of Oz in the fall and the christmas specials had their own little count down, it was so exciting to plan that Ruldolf would be on this night so we would arrange our week around that. Admitted we didn't have half the extra curricular activities etc. But with DvD's etc, i miss the specialness of waiting for the show to come on.
You could always just buy them Dvd's for your kids OR husband for christmas this year. Won't be anything he can do about it next year. Wala- no commericals.
fast forward through the commercials, that's what we do
if you dvr them you can fast forward through the commercials.
solution don't let them watch them when you aren't there.
We get a lot of videos from our library. They are free for check out and no commercials. The only drawback is that some of them skip because they are scratched since they are handled so much.
A few years ago we watched White Christmas on tv.
Not only did they show it over a 3 hour period, but they butchered it to fit in more commercials. There were more commercials than the movie was long.
The whole 'Best Things Happen When You're Dancing' number was cut out.
I was livid. That was IT for me. We got all our favorites on DVD and it hasn't been a problem since then.
I hear you on the commercials...the worst are in professional sports which my 9 yo LOVES to watch! Very sexual in nature and lots of alcohol. And not watching sports is not an option b/c he loves it. I try to have my husband pause at the breaks and then ff through but he doesn't always remember.
We have all the dvd's and still watch the shows on tv.
And just today we discussed how the tv station execs gear the commercials to the audience of the show.
I was actually thinking of making it a project to let them see what is being pushed into our faces this Christmas, and then again in a few weeks, the SUperbowl and make it our semester project so they can see what the media thinks we need and what we really need. .
I homeschool and they are 9 and 13.
if you dvr them you can fast forward the commercials.
Save the money - DVR them and fast forward over the commercials. Even the DVDs these days have commercials for other DVDs and stuff at the beginning. Not sure what commercials you think are bad, but I am sure during the Christmas specials they will be advertising mostly toys for kids. I HATE all the prescription drug commercials on TV these days and always FF over them on our DVR. I will even pause live TV for 5 minuts so I can FF over drug commercials.
I agree with you...some of today's commercials are pretty provacative and racy. Buying the dvd would be better than exposing your kids to inappropriate tv commericals. DVR is great and you could just fast forward through the bad commercials but who wants to do that every few minutes when you are trying to enjoy chirstmas classics with your family.
commercials = garbage
...in my humble opinion ;)
We watch shows/movies on netflix and own a few, treasured DVDs.
We hate commercials too. We haven't had cable in well over 10 years, so the DVR is not an option for us. But we haven't bought the DVDs for a few reasons. First, I don't want to spend the money for something we will watch once a year and is already shown for "free". But more importantly, if it comes on tv we sit down and enjoy them as a family, we "have to, because that is the only time it's on. We don't watch tons of tv, so it's kind of a big deal in our house. If we had the DVD we would "intend" to watch them and never do it. So instead, we mute the commercials and talk about the show or get refills on snacks. We just ignore the ads as best we can.
That's one reason why we don't have any kind of television connection. We WATCH TV, but not cable - basic or otherwise. We stream from Netflix, the site itself, Hulu, & rent DVDs. The network site itself and hulu both have 5-10 commercials per hour (2.5 - 5 minutes worth) but are completely free.. netflix - for streaming or rental have 0 commercials and it costs $10 a month. We watch TV & Movies on our TV streamed through xBox or via the laptops, or on the laptops themselves. I prefer the laptops. I can set it up on the kitchen table & kiddo can eat and watch something while I work in the kitchen... or we can pile into bed with it. But sometimes we use the TV itself.
95% of what kiddo watches is commercial free. It's always really apparent when he's watched TV at a friend's house or at Nana's because he starts parroting the commercials. Ugh.
They were on sale last week at Amazon. $11. Done. Now no ads.
DH and I were just talking about this last night, while watching Grinch that we had on DVR! lol he and his mom think that if you get them on dvd and they are available to the kids All the time, then when they are on TV during the holidays there's nothing to get excited about. IDK I do enjoy watching them a lot (Sans the commercials!!!!!!) But Seriously How often will you really watch them when its Not near the holidays? Maybe a handful. I'm lucky my DS is just a 18months and doesnt really understand the commercials, to him its just more entertainment ;-) I personally Dont Care for the Ridiculous commercials they have on these days and dred the day my DS will want Everything on them :-( Tis the Season ! lol
Happy Holidays !
You mean you didn't want to explain "ED" to your kids? :P
Seriously - I completely agree with you. The ads today are highly provocative and pervasive. It scares me how much my kids are exposed to them.
It also amazes me how many ads pertain to pharma products - yet we are supposed to expect unbiased reporting from the very networks supported by those ads. Please.
Good for you - and you have motivated me to work on this issue too.
I totally agree with you. Young kids want to watch over and over again and often can't operate the remote. Also, they are so engaged in the show, why ruin it with the commercials. I know we watched tha tway when we were young, but I HATE the commeercials. In fact at my house, we don't watch commercial tv - we only watch dvds and on-demand shows. My kids barely know what commercials are.
At teh same time I dont' recommend b uying hundreds of dollars in dvds. Figure out what your kids like and buy a couple each year. I am with you!!
Yep, the DVR lets you skip the commercials. So you don't have to spend the money on DVDs. Although they are probably availble pretty inexpensively.
Fast forward the commercials and your kids won't see them.
I agree with you !!!!! I am sick of watching commercials. I don't have cable any more we just watch hulu but even on there you have commercials..I esp hate the new victoria christmas secrets one...
