E.B.
it took my BIL almost 6 months to hear back about which way they were going with him. i thought that was nuts. i may just take that long.
So I took the Corrections exam for the city of New York back in September 2010. I received a letter about 2 months ago with my score, as well as a # determining where I am on the waiting list. Has anyone ever taken one of these exams? How long do they actually take to call you for a job?

Those seem to take forever. My husband was in a hiring pool for two years before he got his current job.
Frustrating isn't it?
Good luck and be patient!
Depends on your number.
My husband works for NYS DOC and currently there is a hiring freeze and they have closed the training academy. His son is waiting to be called for a job too. They are also closing several jails.
My son in law was told that unless he was one of the first 5 or 6 people on the list he probably wound never get called for a job. He placed 103 with a score of 99! There just aren't that many openings for Corrections jobs.
My husband took the Transit exam late 1992, got his scores midway thru 1993 & then July of 1994 after closing on a house in Hopatcong, NJ 2 days later he rec'd a letter congratulating him that he had been accepted to the Transit Police. As much as he wanted this job, we couldn't just walk away from this house to get something in NY so life took him into many different directions. If you want I can ask him the rest of the process & let you know - I was just reading the posts, i honestly think that for females the opportunities in law enforcement are much more available, i know this because I know some of the female officers on the depts with my husband and they bust their tail just as hard and have to even harder sometimes to do what they need to. I give you a lot of credit for doing what you want to do. If you don't mind me asking, does NY have the civil service test for police officers or is it different exams like corrections & transit? Also keep in mind and i'm not saying this to upset you, towns and stuff are given certain funding for abiding to the whole equal employment when they hire a certain percentage of females - i'm not certain in that applies in a correctional facility setting or even NY or not, but that may push ur score up as well. i wish you the best of luck and hope you stay safe - i know that my husband enjoyed being a police officer for the number of years he was one in newark and sometimes when i look back to the opportunities he's had, i think back to 9/11, maybe that 1st house we bought saved us from going through something - u never know, but you just learn to appreciate every day and i hope you get the opportunity to do all that you want. If there's anything he can help you with please don't hesitate to ask. Best of luck!
