How Long Did Your Child Use a Stroller?

Hello, Parents!

At 16 months, 25 lbs, and 30-some inches, my son is growing out of his Graco stroller and his umbrella stroller. I'm thinking of "upgrading" but don't know how long toddlers actually use a stroller. I want to foster his independence and help him know how to get around and process the world on two feet. I also want to have an alternative that allows him to rest/sleep and be protected in trickier settings. And I'd like an option that's convenient for me when convenience is important.

MY QUESTIONS: How long did your child use a stroller? Was weight and height a factor in your decision? What was the indicator that told you your child no longer needed/wanted a stroller?

Thanks ahead of time, Parents!

My daughter used the stroller until she was probably 2, but that was only if we were going somewhere and there was a lot of walking. They do get tired fast. We travelled a lot and did a lot of walking. Most of the time she was pushing it around and it was holding the coats. She was tiny for her age and required a nap when it was her time also. My son on the other hand was out of the stroller by one. I did not do as much moving around and when we did he had to walk. If he got tired I would carry him for a moment. Both were able to ride in the umbrella, but by the time he was done the foot rest was broke. That is the problem when they get big because they step on it to get in. If he does not like to walk and 25+ pounds you might want to have an umbrella around just for times when you might be doing a lot of walking. Remember most places do rent stollers so I would not invest in another big stoller at this time. At most a new umbrella would be fine. They grow fast. Today he may want to ride tomorrow he will want to run.

Both my children used a stroller until age 3, mostly when I went shopping in the malls, which also carried my bags.

I have a 5 1/2 year old that still wants to sit in the stroller sometimes. We gave her a cut off date of her 5th birthday for stroller use, but when we are walking for a long time (we live downtown and walk most places) we will still use the sit and stand stroller. The stroller we bought for my younger son (2 1/2 now) is a Maclaren that allows for up to 55 pounds, so my daughter could sit in that stroller as well in a pinch. I think most kids will use it off and on until at least 4 if not longer. My 2 year old actually likes to walk more than riding in the stroller if it is a shorter trip. My 5 year old would happily let me push her anywhere if we let her.

My kids are still using them and one is 6 and the other is almost 3. We don't allow them to always use them but they are diffently great when you go anywhere you will be walking for a while. My girls are on the smaller size but the one I have that hold up to 55 pd they will both sit in. I went with the heaviest it could carry as I didn't know if they would stay small. We are military travel quite frequently so our have stood up over time and are not to bulky either. You can get lite weight troller that will hold a child to 55 pounds. If you plan on doing anything like Disney World or trips to outlet mall or mall. It is nice to have them. Over time it adds up if you end up renting strollers at all these places. I would recommend going to babys r us and checking them out you can see what would work best for you and him.

I think the biggest indicator of not needing a stroller will be how he does walking with you..does he run off (this can be a safety issue) and does he get real whinny if he gets tired. A whinny child can ruin a day and nobody wants that and if you don't have one are you willing to carry him if needed too. The last has been my deciding factor to keeps our, I can't carry mine for a long period--I have back problems.

I have a sit and stand that my 7yo used until he was about 5yo. He has asthma & would tire easily walking long distances at the zoo, etc. The sit and stand is made for 2 children, so it holds a total of 100lbs. My 3 yo, doesn't really like the stroller anymore, but I keep an umbrella stroller in the car for any long walking or when she's just tired. The unbrella strollers really are great.

My kids are average size (smaller than what kids are these days) so they rode in the stroller well into 1st grade. Not everyday only when we were going places that required alot of walking like fairs, festivals or parks.

My youngest is almost 3 1/2 and we still use a stroller in some situations - when we walk his older brother to school. He wants to ride his scooter, but he can't make it all the way to the school and back without getting tired and I end up carrying it. And if we go to the mall and will be doing a lot of walking, I will bring the stroller. We don't use it as often as we used to but we do still use it. And you know it's time to get rid of it completely when you end up pushing around an empty stroller and your child is walking. :)

So, if I were you, I would definitely invest in another stroller because I think you will still get a lot of use out of it - IMO.

My daughter is now 3.5 and still wants to use a stroller sometimes for trips to the store. Even my 5 year old will want to sit once in a while. I ended up buying a Maclaren Volo-it fits children up to 55 lbs, very easy to push and has a small basket underneath. Its also very lightweight, if you brought it with and decided you wanted to let him walk, you can fold it up and carry it with the attached shoulder strap. It doesn't recline though, so that may be an issue for you right now.

Two of my kids stopped wanting to ride in the stroller at around 18 months but that turned out to be a passing phase. I have a double valco with a ride on foot board in the back and an extra toddler seat on top. My kids are now 4 1/2, 2 1/2 and a 8 month old. My kids are all very tall so that was one reason we chose the valco. My oldest looks too big to be riding in a stroller but she does get tired. Its also much easier to eat, snack and drink when you are sitting.

Dear mommy. You still have time. 16 months is not even two yrs. and you baby is still in the stages of wanting to go to sleep in the middle of the day. or may cry when they get tired. if the baby walk fast then you may want to alternate walking and sometimes stroller in between min to get your baby use to walking while your traveling in low traffic areas. but you will need a stroller in high traffic area anyway. Dont worry they have stroller for even five yr olds. These days because children will get tired its a load off of you if you dont have to carry them when they do. Blessings

My children were in back pack carriers only by the time they were about 5 mos old. Same with daycare kids on field trips. By the time they were walking confidently they were doing so everywhere and just in the backpack if it was an all day thing and they were tired. But for the majority of the time, they walked from the time they were about 16 mos old. By the time they outgrew the back pack carrier (not by weight, but by learning to get out of it while on my back) at about 22 mos they never used a stroller at all. For the zoo we used our wagon or carried them on our shoulders. But my kids are tiny and even at 10 and 7 they can still have shoulder rides.

My 30 month old is fine without some in some settings (nature museum, pediatrician's office, short walks), but as we now nave an infant too, I have to be able to contain him at other times ( my Dr. apptmts) and for longer trips (zoo) and busier streets. I think it varies from kid to kid. Some also go back to wanting to ride more when a sibling arrives. We use our stroller like a car in the city-walking miles in a day sometimes, picking up dry cleaning and groceries, etc that can limit my ability to hold his hand. If you only used your in and out of the car or for short walks you might stop using it sooner.

We have a 3 1/2 yr old son 43 lbs and 42-43 inches tall. Our daughter is 1 1/2 yrs 23 lbs and 33 1/2 inches tall. We have the Graco DuoGlider and I still use it quite a bit if we are out for a walk, going to a department store, zoo, etc. It only goes to 40 lbs, it works but I am contemplating getting one that can hold more weight. For groceries I get the kids cart and put both in it. There are some stores like Trader Joes that she's in the cart and he walks. We also have a MaClaren single stroller. We use this when going to places that don't have large crowds and our son walks. We also use it when our son rides his bike to the park and we push her in the MaClaren. I like being able to take the kids on walks and have the comfort of knowing I can't loose them/him in a large crowd setting. She has a long way in both before she will grow out of either of them. He is grown out of the Graco but I still put him in it.

We still use the stroller in situations where extended walking is needed, like the county fair or craft shows. We have a double stroller so it's not used for a baby anymore but we still use it for one, or other, of the kids and I put my purse or stuff we are collecting from vendors, (the tons of "free stuff" like yard sticks or cups, you know what I mean) in the seat meant for the baby.

My sons each used a stroller, at least occasionally, until age 4 or so. Even when it's not in daily use, it's great to have for the zoo or other outings where they'll get tired or you worry about them running off. My younger son was taller/heavier, but I still used a stroller when we went to events for my grade schooler, or even when we walked to school to pick him up. It's nice having the basket to hold bags or jackets or snacks. Definitely keep one around. If you're concerned about cost, garage sale season is coming up. Otherwise, look for something sturdy but compact and foldable, maybe with a cupholder or snack tray to keep him sitting when you really want him to, and with a basket.

my son is 3 1/2, 42 lbs and 41 inches. big boy! i don't know exactly when we quit using it, but we had an umbrella stroller (the $20 one you can get at toys r us) that i LOVED. he was probably 2 1/2 the last time we used it. although my son walked at 9 months, so he's been keeping up with us for quite awhile now, it was still convenient to have for when he got tired- or more often, to carry bags/drinks/etc. i am wondering what kind of umbrella stroller you have that at 25 lbs your son is too big for it. maybe get a different umbrella stroller. ours we got from toys r us and my son fit just fine when we quit using it. it was more a matter of him being almost too tall. but he kept his feet up on the footrest and was fine. this spring i think we will probably check it out to see if he still fits, but i bet for the most part we will leave it behind. he keeps up with us and has more energy than me and daddy put together ;)

I just bought a 1st years jet stroller for my almost 3 year old son. Our other umbrella stroller finally died. I really didn't want to spend any money on something he'll outgrow quickly, but we really needed something easy to take to the zoo, etc. or even just to put him in to pick up big sis from school when he's not feeling well. This stroller is labeled as going up to 50lbs which is a huge plus for us- my son is really tall and his feet don't hit the ground. Also it was only $40. So I could justify the purchase. My 7 year old daughter spent more time in it yesterday at the zoo than the 2 year old- but I was glad I didn't have to carry one of them around! Also sometimes it's nice to have if you have coats and bags, you have someplace to put them. good luck! k

I think you will still use it intermittently until around age 4. I don't use mine very often for my almost 3 yr old but it is useful sometimes eg. trip to the mall, trip to brookfield zoo where at some stage she may get tired and I sure don't want to carry her around. I got a great McClaren on craigslist for $50. I love it and it will work I think until she is done with strollers.

Kids can use a stroller on and off until they are about 4. I was never a big fan of those people who let their 2 year old toddle around the mall during busy times when it is crowded. They are great for vacations when going through the airport, etc. My kids were both about 3 when they decided that they did not like the stroller, and figured out how to undo any buckle, but we still used them for trips to the zoo, etc, letting them get in and out and things like that. I wouldn't worry about fostering independence because as an almost 2 year old, and then 3 year old, they will certainly foster that on their own!!! And he will be able to "process" the world on two feet even if you use a stroller sometimes. You can let him take walks around the neighborhood, or even at the mall when it is not busy, but it is nice to have the stroller for when he gets tired instead of having to lug him around yourself!! Plus it is great for carrying your purchases!!

My son is just over 2y.o. and he has always been big. He outgrew his infant car seat by 4 months and currently he is 35 lbs and 36", so I understand big kids. We bought an umbrella stroller that will hold up to 45 or 50 lbs ( around 120.00) so it would last a while and in a year and a half we have really only used it for traveling and the occasional shopping trip. He is a big fan of walking. If you know you will get your moneys worth I would look at uppa baby G-Lite umbrella stroller or at Maclaren.

It depends on where we're going. If we're at the mall with a bunch of other kids, we usually bring a stroller b/c she's tired after playing at the playground. We also bring a wagon to the state fair and the zoo, since that's a lot of walking. She's 3 currently.

I actually bought a Schwinn umbrella stroller that my youngest used until she was 5. It's larger with bigger wheels than your traditional umbrella stroller, had a reclining feature, and was fairly lightweight. I bought it when she was two as she had outgrown her Graco Lightweight, but walking was not always an option for her. It had an understorage basket, and a wind/sun/rain protective shield. The stroller was about $75 6 years ago, has been well used, and is still in great condition. Many of my friends have borrowed it, and I use it in my home daycare everyday. I ordered it off the Schwinn website.

My niece used a stroller up to 5-6 yrs old when there was a lot of walking. Since I knew this I intentionally purchased a stroller (the BOB Revolution) that can be used for a long time. The BOB supports up to 70lbs. I use it with my daughter who is only 2 months and I plan to use it for a long time to come.

If this helps, we have 2 kids.

Our son is 3.5, 40 inches and 38 lbs. He still fits into both his Graco stroller, the Chicco umbrella stroller (plus the Graco Double Stroller and the Jogging Stroller).

Our daughter just turned 2, 36 inches, and 33 lbs (she is a BIG girl). She LOVES being in the Umbrella stroller. We keep it in the back of the car when we go to the mall so she doesn't whine.

I'd keep the stroller for a while depending on your son's interests. Our son is whiny and likes to sit in the stroller when he's "tired" of walking. Our daughter is getting better about being out of it, but depending on where we're going (are there shopping carts they can use?), we have it accessible at all times.

Good luck.

I think my kids were around 4 when we stopped using the stroller, and they simply would no longer fit.

I think alot depends on the child and your lifestyle. I can remember most of the time the kids would walk and all the bags would be pushed arround in the stroller, however, when they decided they didn't want to walk any more, the stroller was a life saver for us.
