I am tired of having dvds all over. We don't have that many but seem to be finding more. I was wondering how you guys organize yours. I have a daughter so she likes to open them up look at them.. but then they get lost at times.. it keeps her entertained but doing this causes us to loose some $20 dvds.
Do you put yours in a case, on the wall?.. How do you keep them organized, do your kids have access to them or they put up so they do not.
My sweetie is 3.5 and some she can have access to that are hers but not sure how to do it.
Thanks for your help.

We've always put the DVDs for the kids in a separate book type shelve. That way they can know which movies they can watch and pick from. When they were younger I wouldn't let them open them or anything. But my kids are 5 & 7.5 now so they can pick their own and they even put them in and put them away themselves and I've taught them how to touch them as to now scratch them.

If you let her get at your and her DVD's, it will get scratched and ruined or lost.
So, put them where she can't reach them.
And, keep the one's that are damaged/scratched, for her to "play" with.

To store them, use a DVD storage shelf unit.
Or a tote like the other responder said below.
Or in a plastic storage bin.

And/or teach her that she can't play with it. But keep the ones that may already be damaged or scratched, for her to play with.

My kids, even when Toddlers, were good about this. I simply taught them how to hold them (ie: holding them by the edges and their finger through the hole to prevent smudges/scratches), and that some were not to be touched, otherwise it will get damaged.
Your child is 3.5 years old and can understand this.

We have ours in binders, the kind meant for holding cds. One binder has exclusively kid friendly movies in it.

Get her a case of her own...and keep yours in a separate case.
Keeping them in cases just makes it harder.

Our tv stand is a six drawer dresser that my mom gave us. My daughters movies are in the right hand drawers and mine are on the left. I don't have as many and many of theirs are videos and take up more room so the bottom drawer on my side holds their coloring books and crayons/markers and such. They don't bother my movies. They aren't interesting to them. We have worked on proper handling of dvds and videos so we don't have to replace any (more)

We have two separate dvd cases. One for the kids, and one for the grown up ones. That way, they will scratch up the kid dvds if that's all they have access too. Our dvds (and video games), we have to lock up or hide b/c my kids will just trash them too if we don't.

We have the Discgear Selector 100 (http://www.amazon.com/Discgear-Selector-Auto-Retrieval-Sy...)

When we got it, I put our kid movies in order alphabetically. Then I got a 3-ring binder, baseball card sleeves, and sticker labels. I looked up each DVD's front cover image online & printed them at the size to fit inside the baseball card sleeves. I stuck them in the binder in alphabetical order. I printed numbers 1 through 100 on sticker labels and affixed those to the baseball card sleeves to correspond to which place in the Discgear Selector that the DVD was kept.

This way my daughter could recognize a movie cover rather than trying to read a list of titles. When we get new movies, I add them on to the end. She just flips through the binder & tells me what number she wants to watch & I retrieve it for her.

PS. Your discs do NOT get scratched in this case like the disc binders. The case only holds/touches the discs at the very edge. :)

We have 2 DVD books. One 'kid' (including things that aren't 'kid mivies' but that he is allowed to watch), and one grow up only. As he's gotten older the movies gradually move into 'his' book.

Tossed the cases (recycled them), several years ago.

Similarly, netflix and Xbox and Macs have parental controls that allow us to keep our digital movies/shows separated.

We bought a huge case for $35 that holds 250 disks (each page has holders for 4 disks on the front and 4 on the back). Everytime we get a new DVD or CD, we put it in its designated section and throw the covers into a covered bin in our garage.

We have a large 4 shelf open DVD rack that is screwed securely into the wall. I keep the kids movies in their cases on the lowest shelves. Our now 6 & 4 year old learned the rules quickly that when they are done with a movie, it goes back in it's case before they get another one. Our 14mo old learned how to get many of the cases open so we have to watch more closely but when we tried the CD books, our DVDs got scratched up from being rubbed back & forth when being taken out. This works much better for us & the kids learned how to be more responsible with them. The adult & teen movies (we have 16 & 13 yr old) are kept at the top so the little ones only get to choose from the not spooky & age appropriate choices.

For ours, the kids have a 3 shelf open dvd shelf, like this : http://www.stacksandstacks.com/mission-4-tier-folding-shelf . I found it at goodwill, it is real wood, so its sturdy, and theirs are in alphabetical order on their shelf, except all the christmas ones which are grouped together. They are allowed to go pick out DVDs themselves ( they are 3 and 5) and they can open the box, but they know they are not to touch the disk itself yet, they bring it to me and i put it in the player, etc. Afterward, the 5 year old knows how to do a simple Alpha order - al the a movies grouped together, b and c, etc....within each letter category might not be in order, but the 3 year old is learning to look at the title and group them by the first letter too. Our grown up movies are in baskets, inside our entertainment center - they also know they are not to touch the TV, DVD player, Cable box, or anything on/on the entertainment center.

I have thought about losing the plastic boxes and putting them in a big binder style holder, but I find it easier this way still, however, our collecting is outgrowing the shelf, so I may have to convert to the other way soon, to save space.

we have a revolving case, on one side is kid friendly and the other side is not. But our daughter is not allowed to open the cases herself. She's 5 and we've never had a problem with her staying out of the dvds, she knows they're off limits.

I have the mini tote that is made to hold CDs or DVDs. You can probably fit about 10+/- in each one. Most are stored under the TV but the Wii games and library DVDs are kept out of the entertainment center.
