How do you know if your child is having night terrors or is just teething or something else is bothering them? My pediatrician thinks she might have night terrors because sometimes she cries really bad and nothing calms her down except taking her outside. I personally thought it might be teething or an ear infection. Last night she woke up several times crying but would fall back to sleep shortly after. I am not sure if she could have had a night terror or if something else might be bothering her. She seemed fine in the morning besides a running nose which she has all of the time thanks to daycare. What are the signs of a night terror?

What can I do next?

Here's a good article on night terrors. My 4-year old suffered from them for about a year. The best advice I was given is to be cautious in trying to give comfort. If it is truly a night terror (as in the case of sleep walking), the child is completely unaware of you being there and could actually become more terrified if startled awake. If she's in a crib, that's great because you don't have to worry about her hurting herself. My son was 2 1/2- 3 1/2 so our biggest issue was protecting him from getting hurt during the night terrors. Anyway, read the article. It's got great information. Good luck.

I gave my son Chamomile tea before bed at night. It calms him down and he seemed not to have them so badly. They also make teething tablets which have it in them, that's how I found out about it. They list on the bottle that you can give them for teething or colic(sp?). I drink the tea at night when I can't seem to sleep. If you want to make it sweet put honey in and you don't have to worry about the sugar because it's a natural sedative. If you have any questions about it you can e-mail me or message me. There are also some good sites about the benefits of the tea. Hope this helps.

One of my 3 little girls had night terrors. My doctor suggested timing the night terrors so I would know a round about ime that they started and 10 minutes or so before they would usually start I would go in there and pat her head or her back. Within a week she wasn't having a night terrors. Nightmares are much different, a child can be consoled during them..During a night terror they can not be consoled by anything, sometimes becoming violent because they are unsure of who you are...I know its difficult but they are solutions..

If your daughter had a runny nose at night, then she could have had post nasal drip running into her throat which can be irritating. Try putting a phone book under the mattress so that her head is higher up.

How are the night lights in the room? Check and ask her to see if anything scares her. A good B=complex vitamin helps nightmares. Also calcium-magnesium added to the diet. They grow so much they need extra.
