My son it 13 months old and I am having problems getting him to eat at times. A month ago I took him in for a check up and he weighed 18lbs 12oz. When I took him back last tuesday he weighed 18lbs 7oz. The doctors were worried about it because he was in the -5% in weight. The wanted to see him again last Friday and he gaind a bunch of weight. He weighed 19lbs 2oz. He has to go back again tomorrow to be weighed again. For the last two days he has not been eating much. Nothing today other than a little of oatmeal. The doctors also put him on Pediasure and he does ok with that when he eats his meals but when he does not eat he will not drink either.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok ladies,
I thank you all for your responses. You all were a huge help. Tanner is doing fine. Tanner went from 18lbs 2oz to 19lbs 9oz in two weeks. He is still going through phases with his eating but it is getting better. That is exactly what it was, a phase plus he was not feeling good he cut 3 teeth at one time. The last three woooo whoooo.

Again thanks everyone who responded.

Sincerely;
H.

I think a decline in eating is pretty normal at this age. I wouldn't worry too much! Sounds like your Dr. is micor-managing his weight! I would try more 'finger-foods' that your son can feed himself. My kids were all pretty much done with "baby food" by this age. Or, if he still likes the baby food, give him his own spoon that he can try to feed himself with, while you're getting bites in as well, can be messy and tricky, but it might work:) There are also utensils called 'lil dippers' I think, where the end is just flat, instead of like a spoon, those are fun for toddlers too. Just keep experimenting, you'll both be fine!

The book "Super Baby Foods" may be of good help to you. Skim through for his age level and there may be some wonderful ideas.

Even though he is not eating a bunch does he drink lots of fluids? He may be substituting fluids for food which even adults will do sometimes. Is there some change that has happened in your life? A new house, someone changing jobs, or some other type of stressor? Are you stressed? This will all make a difference in how well a child will eat also. Kids pick up on the stress that is in a home and respond with the only thing they have control over, eating. You might also try adding fruit to the oatmeal. I know this sounds odd but I actually tried that stuff and it is pretty yucky. Vary the fruits until you find one he likes. Could be that he just doesn't like the taste of the food. You could also try giving him sliced bananas and cheerios. Does he try for food on your plate? Are you feeding him at the same time everyone else eats? If not change his feeding schedule so that he is a part of the family meals. He may be feeling left out.
