How Accurate Is a 16 Wk Sono?

My husband and I went in for our 16 wk sono. We were told we are were having a boy. We took a quick look. Both my husband and I were surprised. We were sure it was a girl. Just curious has anyone been told they were having a boy and acually had a girl? We currently have two boys and a little girl.

What can I do next?

Yes, it's quite possible to be told you're having a girl or boy this early, only to find out later on that you're having the exact opposite. It's happened to a few people I know. The only 100% sure way to find out is either to get an amnio or wait until the baby's born. Sonos rely upon the skill and experience of whoever is giving the test. Some are better than others and sometimes things show up (or don't) that can get things confused.

That depends on the type of sono and the person performing the evaluation. If you are high risk and are having a specialist do the sono, they look for internal organs rather than external and can tell you EXACTLY what you are having. Like with my baby, they could see her ovaries, so we KNEW we were having a baby girl.

GL!

Hi K.,
I am no medical doc or a nurse.....and have not had a chance to read your other posts from other moom's...
But I had a nuchal scan at 13 weeks, and the sonographer gave me a percentage of reliablity on her guess at that time of 95%.

And sure enough when we checked again at 19 weeks, she was right. With a boy, as you may already know, it almost resembles a little turtle, and for a girl, if you see those two horizontal lines -- its a sure thing.....there is no second guessing that...

But that is not to say, that they don't make mistakes. I would repeat your sono in another 6 weeks to be sure, and I am certain they too will feel whatever they see at that time compared to this most recent visit, will hopefully answer any speculation you have one way or another.
All the best, and congratulations.
K.

Try 3-D with color. That should tell you the sex. Good Luck!

Typically, when they say you are having a boy...it's a boy! I swore my last one was going to be a girl, but he is definitely a boy! Have fun! We just had our sono today and found out the we are having boy #3...my house is quickly becoming a frat house I am afraid!

Just out of curiousity, how could you have been sure you were having a girl? In both my pregnancies, I always felt the baby was a certain sex, but was never sure until my 16 wk sono. The 1st time I was wrong, and the 2nd I was right. Both times the sono was accurate. Did they zoom in and circle the area with the "its a boy!" on the sono photo? In my exeperience as well as with my friends, sonograms are pretty accurate these days as the equipment has become more deatiled and hi tech. Perhaps the technician used an old sonogram machine and then maybe the sex organ wasn't clear? Also, Dr's don't reccommend pregnant moms get too many sonograms so unless it is very very important to you(#1 should be that your baby is healthy), I wouldn't add an unscheduled sonogram.
I suppose there is very very small chance they were wrong and you are having girl, but it seems more likely that you are having a boy. Boys are wonderful. Congrats! Think of it this way, if you lived in places like India or China(and in King Henry times),your rank and value would increase with each healthy boy you give birth to. :)

yes, it's possible you're really having a girl. This happened to my co-worker. she was told boy at 16 weeks and found out a week ago she's having a girl. It's also possible you're really having a boy. ;) Hard to tell, so I would wait another 4 weeks.

Genitals in babies look the same for quite awhile. There's even a stage where females look 'male' like because the clitoris hasn't developed into what we think of. 16 weeks is that 'iffy' stage where it's likely the genitals have differentiated, but it's not a 100% certainty.

I don't know anyone who's been told they're having a boy and then gets a girl. Mainly the other way around. Will you have another at 20-22 weeks? That'd be a lot more accurate, as long as baby cooperates. They don't recommend 3D/4D sonograms until you're like 26 weeks or something, when the baby has filled out some and doesn't look as alien-like.

I work with a girl that is pregnant with twins. At 16 weeks she was told she was going to have 2 boys. At her next sono, she found out one of the boys is really a girl. It happens, just not often.
