Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to decide whether we'll go with Renown or St. Mary's for our first baby, due this June. Any thoughts on either hospital, or what to think about when choosing a hospital?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have had babies at both and I would recommend St. Mary's. St. Mary's was a nicer environment and I never had to share a room there! I was put in a room with someone else after my c-section at Renown and it was terrible. The other person was getting cell calls all night and was very loud/abnoxious. If I had another baby, I would pick St. Mary's without question.

Hi... I suggest St. Mary's. Although I haven't been to Renown in a very long time. Too bad you aren't in Carson. Carson Tahoe Regional is wonderful!! I had my 3 at C.T.R. and each time, I had a private room... actually, there, every labor/delivery room is private and quite comfortable. A very good friend of mine had her son at St. Mary's a couple months ago, and raved on and on about her and her baby's care there. She also had a private room. Good luck and congratulations!!!!

I had my son at Renown in 2006 also. I was induced at 6am and the baby didn't come until 6pm. It was a VERY long day. I had the most amazing nurse though which made it easier. She was supposed to be off at 6pm, but she stayed and helped deliver the baby since she had been with me all day and she stopped by the following day to see how we were doing. Yes, I had to share a room, but I have 3 kids and had to with the other two also, so it was expected. They were great to my husband too.
The downsides. They told me my son (perfectly healthy) had to stay in the nursery and I couldn't have him room with me. That I didn't really like at all, Second, the anesthesiologist...the nurses raved about him, but I have never been treated so badly. When I asked for the epidural he informed me I was complaining and must have a very low pain tolerance. I've had 2 kids and know how to handle labor pains! Also, my son was face up which they later told me probably caused a more painful delivery. After inserting the epidural he only came back to check on me once and when I told him I could still feel everything he said I had to give it more time to work. It had been an hour at least! I asked the nurse to have it re positioned and she called the anesthesiologist who was in an emergency procedure and never showed up so I gave birth to be my son not being able to move because of the epidural needle, but never getting any medication.
If I had to choose, I would tour both and unless Renown has had major changes, I'd most likely choose St.Mary's.

I had my first daughter in 2002 at St Marys and was treated wonderfully and had privacy and felt very comfortable! In 2006 I had my second child at Renown. I had been in labor since 11 am, arrived at 7pm and had to wait 2 hours to get in a room. Delivered at midnight and was then transferred to a room with 6 other women for 3 hours, then transferred to a room with 1 roommate. The staff was nice for being so busy but I had to be pushy to get attention that I needed. St marys was also busy but I didn't have the same problems. I would choose St Marys anyday! Congrats and best wishes

Congratulations!

I had my son at Renown in 2006, had a pretty good experience there, except that I had to share a room with a young girl (14 I think) and not only did her baby cry all night, but she slept through it and she snored! But all in all, the staff and experience was great! I had my daughter at St. Mary's in 2008, and had a really great experience there too, and best of all I got my own private room! I think Renown has private rooms as well now too, my friend works there and she told me that they totally remodeled the whole maternity floor. When I was going to have my son I was scared because she told me back in 2006 they had so many women having babies all at once that they were actually delivering out in the hallways and waiting to get rooms. Over all I thing either place you choose, the staff will treat you really good :)

I had babies in both and I woudl prefer Renown. The nurses at Renown are much more responsive and faster. And if you ask them to, they 'd trnasfer you, if there is a room, to a room with no room mate at no additional cost-you juts need to ask. The food at Renown is much better and generous too:). At St. Mary's I gave birth around the shift time in th emorning, and the nurses forgot me and my baby there in the labor room for an hour and a half lying in blood. The nurses were always late in answering the buzzer and then late in responding to the request. At both hospitals you can have yuour baby roomin with you if you prefer to.
