Hi. I'm a mother of two, just arriving from Texas, and my children are attending Francis T. Evans Elementary. In the last week I have seen two or three fights, uncaring teachers, my children's school supplies have been stolen, etc... It's just not an environment I want my children in. Anyone have any tips on choice schools?!?
HELPPPPPPP!!!

I know it is not cheap but from what I understand the only way to really go around here is private schools! I am a military wife also with only one child and she is 4 months old, so I have not had to worry about this yet! Thank goodness! But I have talked to several people and heard that Crofton Elementary isn't bad but as far as middle and high schools I have heard private is the way to go! I know I wasn't much help, but I hope things work out for you! If you find a good public school in the area please let me know! Good Luck!

Hi L.,
My daughter has lived in Maryland all of her life. I have met other parents from Texas who tell me of an education system I can only dream about. Suggestions: Some public schools have special programs; ie Science & Tech, Engineering. These programs tend to insulated these children from the rest. Private schools - they don't tolerate discipline problems. Catholic schools tend to be least expensive while offering a quality education. I don't know much personally about these Charter Schools, but they are worth investigating because they are free!! Sometimes schools/programs have waiting lists so you want to get a jump on those. Good luck.

Hi

I totally understand. It is frustrating to know that most of your child's waking hours are spent in an unhealthy environment. I found Independent Schools provide an environment that is safe, community driven and stimulates learning. To find a school in your area, go to www.nais.org and go a school search. If you see a school you are interested in, don't let the price deter you. I wrote a book about private schools and there is financial help. If you see a schools you want to apply to and you want to know the process and how to get your children accepted, you can get my book on Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com or at my website www.abettertomorrowpublishing.net. If you have questions, you can contact me through my website. Best of luck to you.

Not sure how long you will be stationed in the area. My children do not attend public school. We homeschool, which is another option available to you. We have met some military families who chose to homeschool because they move frequently. If, however, you want to stick with public education, there might be some good public elementary schools in the Brandywine, Baden/Acquasco, or Accokeek areas. Search online under pgcps.org for a listing and visit them before moving your children. I've read positive things about Ft. Foote Elementary (Ft. Washington), and the parents seem to be very involved there. One mom I know said she likes Rosaryville Elementary in Cheltenham, MD. You also might want to visit the French Immersion/Montessori elementary school in Oxon Hill, MD. I think the school is John Hanson Elementary. You've probably thought about private school as another option, and there are several Catholic ones in the area. I would talk to some of the moms on base to see what they've researched.

Hi,

I am not too sure where your children's school is in this area, but I am pretty sure it is too late to do something year regarding the school's environment. You can look into a out-of-boundary school for the next school year. I suggest you contact the main office of the school for mor information. You could also look into provate schools since a lot of them have extended their enrollment deadlines.

Hope this is of some help.

L.,

Unfortunately you are not alone with this problem. Schools are a severe challenge in this area--leaving many parents and students frustrated and disappointed. I am former teacher and current Education Consultant. I was drawn into this type of work because I wanted to do something that empowered parents and students--especially the average parent that might not have $30,000 to spend on a 4th grade education. I am very familiar with the school your child currently attends and agree that it is not a great (or good) school.

But there is hope! Some suggestions: Try to make it through the school year. School hopping is not good for kids. The school year is almost over--see if you can hang in there. Try to make a physical presence (or greater if you already have) at school with visiting, eating lunch with you child, field trips, etc. Supplement academic materials with things he can do at home. Start researching other schools closely--very closely for next school year. Options are out there.

I am a first time poster--I have enjoy this site but have never tried to post. I am not up to speed on what is appropriate or not but am giving you my email if you want to chat futher about this.

Wishing you success! C.
