I have a 16 month old that i let watch Finding Nemo and Mickey Mouse Playhouse and he LOVES it. He really just watches the tv when Im trying to get ready in the morning. I lay him on the bed, and he drinks his bottle and relaxes for a bit. Well lately, he's enthralled with Finding Nemo, and he can literally watch the entire movie. He's been asking for it too...but not just in the morning. he wants to watch it in the afternoon, and before bed. My husband thinks this is a big problem. My mom watches him during the day, so its pretty much 20 minutes of nemo in the morning, and the rest of the movie right before bed.... is this something I should be worried about? Other moms that i've talked to have said its a phase with their kids. I still take him to the park, and we still play...but my husband's really worried that were training a future couch potato.

What can I do next?

Don't beat yourself up on this. TV is not some evil thing. Footnote: in moderation, and depending on what you are watching.
At 16 months, there are more developmentally appropriately videos you can be showing him. Baby einsteins are great, and if he likes the ocean stuff, Baby Neptune is particularly good. The other good thing about these videos, and others like them, is that they are developed to be appropriate for the age of your child. Including the running time. These videos ared 20-30 minutes long.
Hope any of this helps.

i think if it's a little tv in the morning and night, then ok. i need to do the same thing sometimes. as long as it's not all day everyday, i think a little tv baby sitting is fine. us working moms have to do what we can do. actually, ALL moms have to do what we can do.

I think you are not creating a couch potato. A little TV is fine but be careful a little TV can turn into a little more and a little more. Just be careful and don't allow TV an hour before bedtime. I recommend reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Dr. Marc Weissbluth. The best book I've ever read in regards to children.

I don't see a problem with a little TV. At that age, my daughter was watching Baby Einstein videos though, not movies. I don't think a little educational TV is bad, my daughter learned her shapes and colors from Einstein and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The one thing I HIGHLY recommend is no TV at least 1 hour prior to bedtime. I also recommend reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Dr. Marc Weissbluth for sleep info such as the reason for no TV or computer before bedtime.
Sincerely,
L.
