Hidden Teenage Pregnancy and Open Adoptions

This may be long but here goes
So my sister and I found out 2 weeks ago that my 15 yr old niece is pregnant. The very next day my sister was on the phone with adoption agencies. I don't think 1 day was long enough to make a decision of adoption so I offered to take guardianship of the baby until my niece finishes school, and becomes an adult. She told us all that she thought she was 2-3 months along. I figured by May I could have everything I need to bring a new baby in the house. Well on Thanksgiving I brought my niece home with me, and I sat her down and we had a heart to heart. I found out that she is actually 37 weeks along making her due on Christmas day. I am like totally freaking cause you can't even tell she is pregnant and she has yet to see a Dr. I took her straight to the ER and she is in fact due any day. I don't have time to get ready for a baby, and now I am thinking the best thing would be giving the baby up for adoption. Well my other niece offered to take the baby, and I am relieved that the baby will stay in the immediate family, but I am wondering if anyone knows anywhere to get emergency help with baby items....clothes diapers and formula......just things that she will need right away. I have tried planned parenthood, and they don't have much to offer. I have tried to google it and came up with nothing...I live in the Akron area. If anyone knows where we can get help I would appreciate it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well we had the first DR appt today, and we have a baby girl. We are in the process of adopting it, and we have an more accurate esitmated due date of 1-31-09 That makes it a little easier to get ready for the baby. I have contacted the Akron Pregnancy Center, and they are helping out...mostly with legal issues, thanks to all of you for your advice.

There's a group on Yahoo! groups called AkronCheapCycle. It's people in the area selling/getting rid of things (a LOT of baby stuff) free or cheap. You can post a "wanted to buy" post or "looking for free..." I don't know how ADC works to get free/reduced formula - try Summit County Job & Family Services. Good luck!

APS: 105 E Market St, Akron, Ohio 44308 - ###-###-####

I went there when I found out I was having a little one and needed a pregnancy test to get medical assistance. They offer free baby cloths, parenting classes (which you earn free stuff for taking the classes and bringing guest), counseling, and a lot of other services. My sister helps out there and teaches some of the classes now… she has 5 little ones, so she has insider info on how to do lots with little ones. Call them – they will help you usually the same day… they gave me a basket of bottles, cloths, a few diaper, blanket and other things to get started. They also maybe able to help you find other resources in the Akron Area. If you did go there, they are close to the Akron Art Museum… you park about a block down in the free lot off Market (which is theirs), and walk back toward the museum – they are upstairs and they do offer babysitting services during classes if you need it.

Also, try the health department... Merriman Road Clinic: 66 Merriman Rd, Akron, OH 44303 ###-###-#### - they will offer milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, peanut butter, and juice to the mom-to-be and post-natal for 3-6 months or a year for nursing moms, plus formula for baby till it's a year old and the milk and stuff till it turns 5 years (but this is based on income... Just that is a HUGE help!!!

Good luck!!! I had my first at 17, it’s not an easy road… but if the love it there it can be done!

I know this may sound a bit silly but have you tried your local free cycle group? I am in Kent to the Kent/ Ravenna chapter! You would be surprised at how many people are willing to help out when someone is in actual need of something! There is one in Akron! The only thing you have to do is sign up and give something first! More than fair! Here is the link!
Good luck and God bless!

Hi J.,
I'm in agreement with the other ladies. Akron Pregnancy Services can be helpful with baby items and WIC is helpful with formula. I also have a crib in good condition(just a few scratches!)that is yours if you want it,you would just need to get a mattress. Contact me if you're interested (I'm in the Akron area).

Hi J.,
There really are a lot of programs out there for teenage moms, just a matter of finding them. There is a wonderful program called "Help Me Grow." You should be able to call any community resource or your local Health Department for more information. You could probably google it as well. Even the Summit county Children Services would have more information on different programs offered. I am a social worker and worked for the Help Me Grow program in the Lorain/Elyria area before becoming a SAHM. I now live in Stark county. I know that all 88 Ohio counties have this program, but the referral system may vary county to county. I hope this helps your neice. A. K.
