My son was picked out and 'approached' through school pictures. And we went through a long time every Saturday at John Robert Powers in Southfield. It wasn't cheap. You need some B/W shots, a lot of patience, and if this isn't what the kids want to do I wouldn't push it.

I also know of someone who just has the looks, and was approached by an agent or agency and they paid for everything.

So there's no real guidebook to it. Look in your yellow pages and ask. and remember there's a movie studio in the planning stages for Allen Park.

Saw this on facebook a couple hours after writing the above. It was an ad so I got the website for you.

It's very easy. Call igroup in Southfield. www.theigroup.comThey will ask you to send in a few snapshots then they will send you a contract that you sign. It doesn't cost a thing. All you have to do is show up for auditions when they call you and make sure that they have some photos of your kids on hand. Also, look online and register them at www.realstyleonline.com It's $15 pr kid to register but calls will come when they need your kids age group. It's fun!

Several years ago the neighbor across the street had her daughter in modeling. She gave up her career for 3 years. During that time her and that daughter moved to CA to further her career. She left her other two children home with her husband here. Needless to say this daughter now over 21 wants NOTHING to do with the industry.

I have a cousin who's daughter started at about 17 now she is doing very very well, as a matter of fact she was in a video and on an album cover for the GOO-GOO DOLLSs. However her mother also spent all of her time traveling with her and they gave up a lot to be able to drop everything to go spend hours at casting calls and being told sorry you are not right for this.

Also most of the companies you will spend a fortune on portfolio pictures and if you dont have the right ones for this or that, then you need to spend more money.

They could end up hating you for dragging them to all these things and sports are out of the question, so are a lot of other activities because you are sitting for hours in rooms filled with kids waiting to audition for 5 minutes.

Good luck

You should NEVER have to pay for anything up front. Initially pictures should be snapshots or an inexpensive head shot that actually looks like your child (Target or Wal-Mart will do a picture package for less than $10- if you don't get caught up in buying extra prints or poses). Ask local boutiques (clothing stores, bridal shoppes/tux rental shoppes, malls) if they do any fashion shows (usually in the spring for wedding season or back to school time at the mall). It's good for exposure and a good resume builder. They won't get paid for it, but it's good experience and a fun thing to remember. Have fun and good luck!
