I was thinking of submitting my son's picture to a modeling agency in SF. Have any of you done this before? What was your experience?

What can I do next?

Try submitting to Marla Dell agency. You can find them online. They want 3 snapshots of your child. I submitted for my son, but got a polite rejection letter. you should never have to pay money to get your kid into modeling. if they ask for money, it is a scam. Agencies make their money when your child books a job. Having said that, it may be harder than it seems to get an agency to sign him on. I know there are a few other kid agencies in SF, but I don't know much about them. I am going to submit to Marla Dell for my second son. good luck!
Also, know that when you do get signed and have to go on jobs, you will literally have 24 hours notice to go to a casting call. One of the reasons that I have not pursued this very aggressively is that I would have a hard time to go to calls with only 24 hours notice. If you have a flexible schedule and can go on calls with last minute notice, then definitely give it a try. Send a catchy letter introducing your son to the agency, as well as your 3 snapshots. have fun!

Hi S.,

Here is a message from my friend. You my want to try this agency.

"Stars Inc. is who my Gr. Son works with. There's another one who's familiar with but I can't remember the name. They send him to audition for films (i.e. a new movie with Danny Glover) and voice-overs. I'll get the info from Sharon. He just had another poster up in Mervyn's store."

Be very careful, there are a lot of scams out there! Google any agency you find and make sure that they are legitimate. If anyone tries to get you to spend a lot of money on pictures, it's probably a scam. Good luck!

Just make sure that you find a reputable agency. Many of these so-called agencies are nothing but very high priced photography services that want you to pay for a very expensive set of "portfolio pictures," and have no intention of ever finding any modeling jobs for your child.
Check the Better Business Bureau and other agencies before you pay for anything. If the modeling agency tries to pressure you into using their photographer and the prices are very high, beware!

I tried this a few months back with my daughter. There are only two reputable agencies in SF that represent children. Sorry to say I don't have their names in front of me.

Good luck and like the other mom said if they ask for money or say "you need headshots and we can sell them to you" its a scam.

S.,

My daughter did some modeling as an infant. (We knew someone who worked for Pottery Barn Kids and she asked if we would let our daughter model for them.) I found the experience to be a bit much for my easy-going, good-natured baby. The 3 shoots my daughter was a part of were very busy with a lot of people running around. The photographer (a very famous children's photographer who claimed to be great with kids) was abrupt and not at all friendly towards my baby. Overall, the stress on both my daughter and myself was not worth it and we stopped after three photoshoots. Before you pursue modeling for your son, evaluate if this is really an environment you want to expose your baby to.
