I am desperate. I am trying to write this without crying but I wont make it. I am 29 weeks pregnant. This is my third pregnancy. All have been great until now. Last week I started getting the chills, having nausea, not being able to eat etc. My doctor said it was the stomack flu or a virus and would last 5-7 days. I am in my 9th day. I can't eat anything, everything tastes nasty or makes me throw up even saltine crackers. I can't take care of my 2 young children who need me and crave my time. I have such bad hunger pains that I can't sleep at night. I feel better when I am laying down or sitting but as soon as I get up to go or do anything I feel so much worse. I am desperate for some relief. Does anybody have any experience with this? Is it possible to have morning sickness so late in your pregnancy? If so I don't think I can make it another 11 weeks like this. ANy advice or help I am desperate. Anything that I can eat that would not make me sick but stop the hunger pains? Please I really need any help you might have. I am a tax accountant and afraid of losing my job. I missed 3 days last week just before a major deadline. I am trying to work today but can't concentrate becuase I am so tired and hungry and sick. This pregnancy was unexpected. I got pregnant when I just started my new job so I wasn't eligible yet for short term disability. I thought about bed rest but I can't afford it without ST disability. I am the only one bringing in money and work hourly so when I am sick I get no pay. The doctor gave me medicine for the nausea but it didn't help. SHe also gave me medicine to help the food go down quicker and all that did was keep me up all night. Please help

What can I do next?

You need a jucier though to make this concoction: you need 3 granny smith apples(medium sized), about 2inches of fresh ginger root and a bag of organic spinach. juice together and drink. When i was pregnant with my 4th child i got the flu, i couldnt even get out of bed, much less eat and couldnt take any medications. I was on my 3 day of being sick when my husband got this recipe from a friend of his and it worked. I drank about 2 6oz glasses of it that same day. its really green but doesnt taste bad. the next day i was 100 % better. Now whenever any of us starts to get sick, we make this drink, even my 8 year old loves it.

You need to contact your doctor right away and tell her everything you just wrote about. If she does not recommend that you go to the hospital, then go without her recommendation. You and the baby are dehydrated and exhausted. You need to get on an IV right away. There is no such thing as a "stomach flu." You have some sort of virus that is attacking your body and you are not able to fight it off due to the pregnancy. You are very sick and need medical attention.

I caught a virus at 38 weeks and had fever, chills, vomiting, etc, for 3 days and my OB just kept telling me to take Tylenol (which I did). On the fourth day with a fever of 102F he finally told me to go the hospital. I was admitted and put on an IV right away. They said due to the illness I (and the baby) were extremely dehydrated. I ended up having the baby 10 days early by C-section because the illness put so much stress on him and his heart rate became erratic.

PLEASE, PLEASE talk to your OB and go the hospital.

You NEED to either go back to you doctor or see someone else. It is their job to do something for you especially since you are going on nine days in this condition. A pregnant woman can not afford to not be eating and drinking not only for baby's sake but for her one. When you are not nourishing yourself the baby is going to take all the nourishment it can get from your body which is going to lead to you getting even sicker. If your doctor won't do anything, go to the ER or OB section of your hospital. This is not morning sickness and it sounds to me like you are running on empty. You can not be pregnant, juggle a job, and take care of two kids in this condition. You are going to end up with pneumonia. I am not trying to scare you, only to tell you that you need to take care of your self and I don't think you are taking this as seriously as you need to. Please get some kind of medical help and good luck.

I used to put a small drop of peppermint oil on the tip of my tongue, and it would cool and settle all the way down my throat to my tummy. The health food store I went to also sold ginger tablets, and ginger toothpicks, which I would suck on and play with pretty much all day.

I would suggest also telling your dr to do something. Late morning sickness happens, but I don't think I've ever heard of that. I know when we have the stomach flu, the only thing I can give the kids is rice, regular, not instant, and dry toast, and mashed bananas. It's something the pediatrician had me do during an outbreak of the stomach flu that all 3 kids had, you should have seen the laundry.

And by the way, I feel you on no work, no money, but if it comes down to it, they cannot fire you if you have dr's notes. Family Medical Leave Act covers alot of sticky ground there. Had a jerk boss, and got to go through that before.

1 last thought, if you are able to drink, just not eat, you could try meal replacement shakes. Some are made simply to be that, a meal replacement. I used to give my father some by melaleuca when he was doing radiation, he was able to drink them despite the upset stomach.

Good luck Mama!! 11 weeks left, you can do it!!!!

Try liquids rather than solid foods if you are still having a problems keeping food down. Healthy liquids, v-8, things with viatamins and nutrients. Protien drinks, ect. Orange Juice has a lot of acid in it, so I wouldn't drink too much of that sort of thing.

Yes, you can have moring sickness this late on. However, someone needs to figure out if you still have the flu or if it is due to pregnancy.

I would either revisit/call your doctor and ask for a Tamiflu (if it is healthy for you and baby.

Please also understand your health is more important than your job at this point. I understand you are stressed and it's tax season. There are pleanty of accounting jobs available right now for large companies (I've been job hunting) so rest assured, worst case senerio, you'll be okay. Put that worry aside and focus on getting some rest.

Hopefully your husband or mom or family friend can take the children for a while so you can catch up on sleep.

Sincerely,
J.

Hello B., no worries on my second pregnancy, I had nausea the whole time, I guess it was a make up for the first one I didnt have it then at all. :)
anyway there is an acupressure point on your wrist, this is how you find it and it is specifically for nausea and used alot in pregnancy, this is how you locate the spot to push:
take your index and middle finger and lay them across your wrist right at the crease of your hand, make note of the distance where the fingers you used to measure comes to on your arm. Press at that spot, mark it so it is easy for you to find.. you can press as often as you need and it is usually instant relief, tho you may have to do it frequently if the nausea is bad. Pressing this point will NOT hurt your baby or you.. :)

Hope this helps and blessings on the new one,

There is anti-nausea tablet that is safe for pregnant women. I took it when I was about 3 months pregnant as I suffering terribly with nausea. I never even knew that there was something out there that I was allowed to take. I spoke to a pharmacist at a chemist that I did not usually go to. (It was 10pm and my pharmacy was closed.) He helped me immediately. I suggest you ask a pharmacist in your area or go online to find something that is available in the States. I do not live in the US,but I am confident that if I could find something, so can you. All the best.

If you have a Blood pressure machine, start monitoring your bp twice a day. I had the exact same thing happened and it turned out to be pre eclempsia.

However, do take your vitamin at night right before bed. Are you eating smaller meals or when you eat do you eat a lot? I'll suggest to eat smaller meals. When I was pregnant with my daughter I was sick the whole time I was pregnant. I found that if you have some soda after you eat it helps. Try eating more bread like bagels they are hard to throw up and will keep you tummy happy for a while anyway. Next time you go for your appointment, I would mention it again and have them test for excessive protein in your urine.

Make sure to stay hydrated and if you find something that will stay in your tummy, stock up and enjoy it. I had to do that.

You are not alone.

First off the Dr needs to do something... that's their job! Maybe even just giving you an IV for your fluids might help. When I get bad stomach bugs (prego or not) I go to the ER to get IV fluid and it always makes me feel so much better. I had a stomach bug at the end of my pregnancy and after the IV was able to eat again. I wasn't as sick as you are, but I'm sure it will still help. If not at least it will give the baby much needed liquids (but I guarantee it will help you too!). There are also medications like Zofran and Phenergan to help. They are suppositories too so you won't throw it up. Also you can try a combination of B6 and unisom. The unisom is an over the counter sleeping pill, and something about the combination calms the stomach. But the unisom will knock you out so I wouldn't recommend it unless someone is helping with the kids. One thing my dr suggested, but I never tried it so I can't tell you if it works.. is he said get the syrup they use in coca cola. I'm forgetting the name but the pharamacist would know. He said it coats and settles the stomach. Also what I did was I'd nibble on plain cheerios. Sometimes I'd be able to eat a handful at a time, sometimes only 2 per hour, but food is food. It has vitamins in it so whatever you can keep down is great. I also sipped on gatorade to get some electrolytes. I had horrible morning sickness with my son and thought I wasn't going to make it, but I did.... you will too. It seems so far away, but it's almost over! And hopefully it is just a bug and you're starting to feel better already!

Wish I could help about the job situation. I'm sure if you have a medical note you can take legal action if they cause a problem, but I'm not too sure.

Hope you feel better!

Jess

You can take tylenol sinus severe congestion and see if you feel better. I had the flu when i was pregnant too (mine is 2 months old now:). The drainage was so bad (even though it wasn't coming out my nose) that it was draining into my stomach and made me nauseaus and gave me a sore throat. I also have 2 other kids and this pg was unexpected for me too!! Mine are 4 years old and 19 months - all three boys :) Anyway, if the tylenol doesn't work (you have to get it behind the counter at the pharmacy) then try taking Dramamine - start with the smallest amount then move up. If it doesn't make a significant difference in less than a day, then it's not nausea from your pregnancy, it's from something else- like drainage.
I totally feel your pain being sick and taking care of the others. It is hard enough when they are sick, but if you are sick it seems to be ten times worse!! Feel free to email me if you need to vent or just chat - ____@____.com

Best of luck!

Did your doctor mention becoming dehydrated? Because by now I would think he would have put you in the hospital and on IV fluids and phenergan. Phenergan can be a suppostory or intervenous. That's what they did for me. But then again I didn't have the flu, I just had mornng sickness for the first 5 months of preg. You didn't mention how far along you were. But read about dehydration also on www.google.com. Do a search. I feel for you. But it's not the end of the world. It won't last forever. But the flu is dangerous. so be proactive and maybe change doctors. Good luck

Hi B., The best I can tell you is that, yes you can have morning sickness all thru your pregnancy. I know i did. Try regular white bread, dry toast with a little honey or jelly. Also, a popsickle will help with keeping your sugar levels up, since you aren't eating enough. Try not to eat anything with any kind of oil. Avoid all or most dairy if possible and of course drink water constantly. It a pain to go pee all the time but at least the water is some form of nutrient. Hope this helps! Also, talk to your boss. Just explain to him how bad your feeling and that you are really trying hard to maintain at work and let him know that you value your job and you want to be there. Sometimes that will go along way with an employer, they might even sympathize with you. Good Luck!

Ginger tablets. They are amazing for nausea. Also, when I was pregnant with my youngest I noticed that if I didn't force myself to eat something, crackers, granola bar anything, I was so sick that I was in bed for the rest of the day. This was totally different from my first pregnancy. Whether you can stomach it or not you need to try to get something in there regularly. You can get ginger tablets at any store. They are approved by ob/gyn's for this. (I checked it out when I was pregnant)
You will have to play with what will stay down. Just because it seems like it should doesn't mean it will. Listen to what you are craving. You body will tell you what it wants. Also remember the BRAT diet. Your stomach is sensitive and irritated now. Banana's, Rice (plain), Applesauce and Toast (dry). This is the easiest on the stomach after feeling like this.
I hope you feel better. It is only 11 weeks but they can be the LONGEST in the world especially when you don't feel good.
I hope this helps some.

I have a list of ways to treat gastroenteritis! (They called it stomach flu but it's not a flu and it shouldn't last more than 48 hours in 99% of cases).

This does not sound like morning sickness to me. Has your Dr. checked your hormone levels? Has she checked for pre-eclampsia? I know that fever and chills can be symptoms of this. Are you able to do some of your work at home?

If you are getting dehydrated you may have to be put on an IV or the baby may start to suffer.

I would get a second opinion on this, maybe from a high-risk OB.

I suffer from a pregnancy condition caller Hyperemesis Gravedarum (HG). Which is basically the way you feel now is the way I feel the entire time I am pregnant. I vomit continuosly (anywhere from 5-20+ times per day). And am nauseaus the rest of the time. With both of my boys I ended up with PICC lines and home health care so that I could receive IV nutrition at home unless it got REALLY bad then I would go into hospital.

I've never heard of HG beginning as late as 29 weeks. It could be your gallbladder. I had ALOT of GB issues with my first pregnancy and that is something could make you very nauseas and ill. Ask your doc if she can order a U/S to check out your GB. Because of my disease I get when I'm preggo I have LOTS of experience with anti-nausea meds. Ask your doc about Zofran. Its one of the only meds that worked for me and made it possible for me to function most days. Also you can ask about Phenergan and Reglan. You should also consider going into the hospital for IV fluids. Its amazing how much better you can feel after just 1 bag. PLEASE don't let yourself get to dehydrated. Its VERY dangerous for your baby and only makes you feel worse. Trust me Been There Done That. Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any further questions or need any further advice.

Oh, Im so sorry! I don't think this is morning sickness though. Morning sickness is caused because your endocrine system has added stress during the first tri-mester from producing your pregnancy hormones. Some time in the second semester the placenta is big enough to produce the hormones on its own so this is when it usually subsides--so for it to start so much later without being there from the beginninng doesn't make sense.
Go back to your Dr. immediately and get him to run other tests--there are a number of different bugs that can cause this. Food poisoning, different bacterias, etc. After 9 days they should be doing this since you are in danger of dehydration and you need your nourishment for both you and your baby.
Finally, raise up a flag--call your friends and family and get some help with your other children while you are sick! This is what they are for!

I suffered from what the Dr. called hyper emesis for the first 5 months of both of my pregnancies. It got so bad that I had to be fed by IV fluids in my house. I had to take care of a 2 year old and drag an IV pole around. What helped me a lot was fresh key word fresh ginger tea. Buy a ginger root cut off about an inch boil it in about 2 cups of water until the water starts roll. Of course the longer you let it sit the stronger the brew. That with a small spoon of sugar to help it go down easier because, it has a bite to it. It helped me with the nausea. Drink hot or cold. Good luck, this too will pass. Hold on you're almost there.

What your symptoms are sounds fishy to me. I had morning sickness throughout my 4 pregancies and this doesn't sound like morning sickness. The chills symptom sounds like illness due to virus or bacteria. If you are still having chills I would go back to your doctor. Pregnancy is a funny thing with your immune system sometimes, though, too. It could be that it is taking your body longer to get over the virus just because you are pregnant and you just need more time to rest. Treat your nausia with water, sweetened tea and other soothing type fluid. If you can get yourself to the point where you are needing to pee frequently that will help you a lot. If you are feeling hungry, go for anything that sounds good...even if it is junk food. Try sucking on Dum Dum lollipops. Stress was a biggie for me when I was pregnant. The more stress I felt, the worse I felt. You sound like you have a sizeable amount between your job and your young kids. Try to get a little more sleep and don't worry about the kids. As long as someone (husband, grandma, good friend) is taking care of them while you rest, you can make up the mommy time with them when you are feeling better. It is not just you you are taking care of by doing this, that little guy needs you to rest, too.

Ask your doctor about getting a pump for the nasuea. I had a friend who got one because of such bad nasuea. It constantly injects the medicine in you. Kind of like a diabetic pump. I'm sooo sorry. I feel so bad for you!
I experienced something similar to you when I caught the flu in my second trimester. I could barely eat too. I looked at a ton of forums and here's what ended up working for me...
Watermelon-it's a good hydrator
lemon flavored things-I don't know why,,,but it helped me to eat without getting nauseous. I kept slices of lemon ready and added it to room temperature water. Cold water made it worse. I also ate the sugar free lemon cookies from the diabetic section at Publix. That seemed to help a lot to put something in my tummy.
Salt and Vinegar Chips-I don't know why, but it helped.
Apple Flavored Jolly Ranchers-Again...I don't know why, but it helped with the nausea. Apparently it's good for motion sickness too.

I also just tried to stay busy. I found that on the days where I stayed home in bed that it almost fed the sickness and I just would feel worse and worse and more depressed. When I went to work, talked on the phone, did puzzle books, played computer games, and anything else to pass time I just felt a bit more distracted. It's so hard to not get sucked into having a pity party for yourself when you're not feeling good so try not to get in that trap.

I did eventually get a zpack from my doctor too which seemed to kick it. It sucks because at first they didn't offer anything to me until I kept calling back and explaining that I wasn't just being a whiny first time preggo.

Well...good luck. I hope you feel better soon! At least you're not far from delivering. Just think of the amazing miracle you'll be holding in your arms .

Go to your health food store and get a homeopathic for nausea. Also, try acupuncture. If you are in Tallahassee, look up Rachel Kelley. Once you are able to eat, make sure you eat every two hours. that helps keep you from having an empty stomach. empty stomach seems more prone to nausea during pregnancy. Also, if you are open to the idea that there's a cause beyond the physical, Louise Hay's book Heal Your Body says vomiting is a result of a rejection of new ideas. I have always found this to be tru if I suffer from vomiting. Maybe you still need to come to terms with the surprise pregnancy?

Get some vitamin B6. Take that and sip on some peppermint tea. For me, sharp cheddar cheese helped with the hunger pangs and settling the stomach so that I could actually eat real food. If you can't find something that works, go back to the doctor and keep bugging until they do something to help you. At this stage it's very easy to get dehydrated and could put the baby in distress. Don't take chances and wait too long to seek help. I hope you find relief soon!

I would try another doctor as well and try bananas and toast, that is what works with my kids when they are vomiting and need something that will stay down.

Prayers are being said for you.
I don't know if there is much that can help... If it IS a stomach flu/virus, then it's just a matter of time. If it is morning sickness, then there are things you can try. I had severe nausea with both of my pregnancies (from about 3 weeks until the day they were born). I did not throw up except in the first trimester, but after that the nausea did not go away. 24/7 EVERY DAY. Strange things helped. In the car, during my 40 min commute to work, I would drink a 16 oz glass of chocolate milk (several gulps, not all at once), then sipped a like size glass of Indian River pink grapefruit juice. That helped alot (I have NO IDEA why)... I also nibbled cheetos alot. At home, my husband made me cheese toast in the oven and I nibbled that for "dinner" for days in a row. I kept a nasty taste in my mouth unless I was eating, and having food in it was all that helped. Ginger is a common wives tale remedy for nausea... I drank ginger-ale so much that I can't drink it today.. also, nibbled ginger snap cookies. Caffeine (chocolate also has caffeine) made me worse.. It was to the point I could blind taste something and tell you if it was caffeinated.. (sodas, etc). Drinking non-caffeinated orange soda helped with that some. I also could not drink out of any kind of can or softened water (It would taste metallic to me). So I drank bottled water and only out of glass containers.
During my 2nd pregnancy, my Dr prescribed an anti-nausea medication primarily prescribed for chemo patients. It HELPED. I was non-functional before... after I still was nauseous but had enough relief that I could care for my 2 1/2 yr old. Took it every 4 hrs. Ask your Dr about it. It is expensive, but insurance and Mail Order prescription plan made it affordable for me... It was called Zofran (sp?). Within an hour of taking it, my husband was able to take me to a restaurant and I ate a full breakfast. (I had been at the Dr's office immediately prior to filling and taking the Rx, and could barely even sit up on the treatment table I was so ill feeling and weak from not feeling like I could eat)..
Hang in there.
And check back with your OB. Call them on the phone and ask them isn't there something you can take??? Phenergan and like stuff did nothing for me but make me sleep- and still without relief... Ask specifically about the Zofran/Zophran...
Best wishes...

B.,
First of all, relax... It will all work out ok.
One, for the nausea, ask your Dr. if he can give you Zophran. It works very well.
Next, if you have chills, it is likely not "morning, or afternoon sickness" it is likely the flu, a cold, or a virus, like your Dr. said. The flu and other illness are taking a lot longer to get rid of (even 1-2 months).
Ok, now, there is a wonderful immune booster that is completely natural called "Silver Hydrosol". We use Sovereign Silver. You can get it in any health food store. It will help your immune system to strengthen. Also, there is an anti-viral natural remedy called Anti-V also found in the health food store. One more thing is to make sure you are taking your vitamins. If you follow the directions and take them all regularly, it will knock out this bug quickly, you will notice a difference within a day or two. God Bless You!
One last thing, while you are there, pick up a bottle of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and take one teaspoon mixed into a glass of water or apple juice each morning and evening for extra energy and improved overall health. You should do this one everyday whether sick or not, for cleansing and keeping you healthy.

I honestly don't remember at what week you normally have the glucose screening, but your complaint about the constant hunger pains makes me think your blood sugar is off. Have you had the screening yet?

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I was nauseous for most of my pregnancy as well so I feel your pain. My suggestion only pertains to helping with the hunger. I found that smoothies were a good solution for me. You can either make them at home or get that a smootie king or planet smoothie. There are many different flavors and can be very filling. It is not as difficult as eating actual food and they seemed to go down easier and also have great nutritional value. Try it and good luck!!

wow !! sounds like you are having a really hard time, sorry about that. My opinion, you should go to the emergency room, they have to see you even without insurance !! With you not being able to keep food down for the last 9 days could be causing pain or discomfort to your unborn child, please seek help at the emergency room.....maybe I can get some rest if you do, lol your story kinda touched my heart. let me know how it goes. julie

First, you need to contact your doctor again and bring them up to speed on your condition and how you feel. I'm NOT trying to scare you ~ but you need to listen to your body ~ Make sure the doctor knows about your stomach pains and not eating, especially! You may need to be put on an IV so that the baby is getting the nutrients it needs.

Second, have your husband go to a maternity store (I believe there is one in St. Augustine at the 'outdoor' Outlet Center) there is one in the Jacksonville Avenues that sells Preggie Pops - They are full of Vitamin C and work wonders on Morning Sickness.

I understand the added stress of your financial situation but please take the time to contact your doctor and be checked out again.

Hi B.,

Ginger! That's one reason we used to drink Ginger Ale when we were nauseous. They don't necessarily put Ginger in it anymore so you have to check the label. You can also go to the health food store and buy Ginger capsules. (I keep it in my house for just that purpose.) It's just food so it's fine for the baby and it is even listed in the Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) that your doctor has in his office.

God Bless you! I wish I had known about it with my babies. I was nauseous from conception to delivery with my first. (So yes, it is possible to stay queasy!)

If you are interested in a better prenatal I can give you some information. I know several people that have tried it and their nausea has gone away because they are getting enough nutrition from it. The primary reason you get nauseous is because the baby is leeching all the nutrition FROM you. (You know what it's like when when you don't eat, even when you're not pregnant.) This prenatal vitamin has a extremely high absorption rate and the baby doesn't need ALL the nutrition you are getting from it. Some stays with mommy :) Also there is an additional supplement for the babies eyesight and neurological development.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Let me know if you want more info...

B.,

You really can have morning sickness this late in your pregnancy and it occurs at other times during the day.
My own bouts with nausea and vomiting lasted nine months with my first child.
The chills could be due to lack of nutrition but the fever is not normal. That could be a virus or the flu.
If your fever does not go down soon, press your OBGYN for tests.
I kept Saltines by my bed and a carafe of water. I used to eat the Saltines before I even got out of bed. It did help and every little bit of help was wonderful to me.
Make sure you keep taking your vitamins and if you can tolerate it some extra C in the form of Emergen-C, orange or tangerine flavor. It is available at CVS pharmacy and many health food store. It is a powder you mix wih water and tastes good. It will help your system fight off colds, flu and viruses.
I would suggest asking your OBGYN before you take it to make sure it does not conflict with your medication.
I wish you well and I will keep you in my prayers.

Sincerely,
C.

I had a similar problem when i was pregnant with my daughter and my ob gave me these tablets that dissolve in ur mouth to help with nausea and vomiting...they were a god send. The other thing i lived by was sparkling water...Publix and many other chains carry a water called LaCroix that is lightly flavored or you can add about 1/4 sportsdrink to 3/4 club soda... the electrolytes in the sports drink will help raise ur cugar levels. Also anything with ginger or gingerroot in it... i believe there are even vitamins... but ginger is a natural anti-nausea aid. Hopefully some of this will be helpful, and just knowing that t will all be a distant memory soon enough. And remember that your children, as desperate as they may seem for your attention, are young enough that they wont remember that mommy was not herself for a few weeks and if they could they would completely understand that right now your main concern is your health and your new baby's health. And you will be of no use to your two angels if you keep beating yourself up over it! Just breathe... and i will keep you in my prayers :o)
