*HELP* Self Divorce - Leaving Abusive Marriage

I have been in an abusive marriage of varying degrees for 13 years. I attempted to leave my husband several years ago to no avail thanks to his financially ruining me & my religious familys circumvention.

He is finally agreeing to let me go & is agreeing to an amicable divorce with no lawyers to expedite the process. I need to take advantage of this while he is being reasonable. I need your help in finding the printable documents & anything else you may be able to lend advice wise. I live in Rio Rancho, New Mexico in Sandoval County.

I thank you all in advance...

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

I have never gone through this, and I'm sorry you have to.

I don't really know what direction to lead you in, but I went to goole and typed in "printable divorce papers/ Rio Rancho New Mexico" and got a ton of hits. There are kits you can buy, papers you can download, maybe that will help.

For your protection, and for the protection of your children, I would advise getting a lawyer -- or at least consulting one. Call the Women's Community Services. They offer support and advice to women leaving abusive relationships. They may even be able to get you legal aid for a reduced fee (maybe even free, but I can't say).

You can go on-line and print out all the forms from the District Court website!

Good luck!

Check Staples, Office Max, Office Depot etc. they all have 'divorce kits' that have all the papers necessary.

Because he was abusive and because he's financially ruined you, I would not do this divorce without an attorney involved! If you really think he's going to be reasonable, you may be in for a surprise. Abusive people are all about control. I don't foresee him doing this willingly, especially since he probably knows that you don't have a clue what you're doing...which is obvious seeing that you're coming to this forum for help. Go see an attorney for advice on how to do it. They may be able to help behind the scenes to make sure it is done correctly without being directly involved. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about this situation. I agree with the other advice that he is probably not really willing to let you go. Things are never that easy. I have been in abusive relationships and things are NEVER easy. You need to focus on yourself and kids. It is hard to move through the victim mentality after you have been living with for so long. There are a lot of support groups out there. You need support to leave, if you do it on your own, it could be trouble.
