My husband is a printer and washes his hands about a hundred times a day. He gets cracks that just seem to get wider and wider. I finally convinced him to work on it from the inside out. We use Udoes Oil(pronounced Oodoes). It gives you Omega 3,6 and 9. He also uses Corn Huskers lotion to keep things moist on the outside. This year, he had to admit that the oil worked better than the Corn Huskers ever did by itself.
Good Luck,
Beth

My dad has been a brick layer for 30 plus years and he uses Corn Huskers Lotion. This has saved his hands!!!!
Also, to start or for a bad case, coat the hands in vasoline and wear gloves overnight.

Hope this helps.

We like Glysolid. It comes in a red tub and can do wonders for dry skin ...

For cracks, I know several men who use crazy glue and then pinch the crack back together.

Best of luck!

What does he do? If he does something where his hands are constantly wet (like bartending) it could actually be a fungal infection that make them crack open. We used to call it bar rot in the bar I worked in, and anti-fungals were the only thing that worked. The guys would get athletes foot products since they didn't want to use yeast infection cream on their hands, but either might help a lot. If those don't work, there is prescription ointment anti-fungal medication.

If that is not the case, I just read something the other day about using coconut oil. Pure organic coconut oil is supposed to be great for dry cracked skin. I haven't tried it, but thought it sounded interesting, since I have extremely dry skin too. Lansinoh is another good idea, and definitely use the gloves overnight. Always apply lotion/cream after a shower to help seal in the moisture.

Coconut OIl. Comes in a jar and it is white (looks solid). Once you start rubbing it in it melts with the warmth of your skin. Use this as many times a day until you start noticing that his hands aren't rough. I use this as diaper as diaper creme and moisturizer. It smells great too. You can also use it in your cooking. So many uses.

HI D.,

I agree with Kristin and Joy. Renew lotion will actually heal. I just gave a bottle to a friend who had dry feet that would crack and bleed. They're as soft as they are supposed to be now. It's been less than a week.

There are probably nutritional issues as well. Skin disorders appear because our bodies are not getting what they are supposed to or not assimilating it the way they should. An absorbable multivitamin will help. I can recommend one if you like.

Regards,

M.

There was a product from Elizabeth Arden called tripple cream, I think. It was kind of like A&D ointment, but it worked wonders.

You could also try a very old trick. Just before bed, take crisco (yes, the old sold shortning!) and make a paste with equal amounts of crisco and salt and have him rub a handfull over his hands. Use water that is just hot enough to melt of the shorting, and rub in the rest. Use a moisturizer in the morning after a shower.

I have severe dry skin on my hands also and recently tried using some of the leftover Lansinoh lanolin cream I had for breastfeeding. It really seemed to help with the dry skin. If you put this on at bedtime and then wear gloves (I'd recommend cotton, not latex) overnight it should help a lot. But, there is probably something he is doing that is also contributing to this- does he have to wash his hands a lot or work in the dirt? If so, try to wash hands less if possible and only in lukewarm or cool water (the most important part of handwashing is the running water and rubbing them together not the temp of the water) and if working in the dirt, wear gloves.

Have him buy latex gloves and each night before going to bed, put the lotion on then the gloves. It may be annoying but will stop the cracking and cuts.

Working in healthcare and washing my hands up to 20x a day I get VERY dry hands too. I found the best thing is using creamy Vaseline - http://www.amazon.com/Vaseline-Petroleum-Moisture-Creamy-... (it does not sting like most lotions, it's inexpensive and you can find it in most grocery or drug stores) and then you can put cotton socks or thin cotton gloves on the hands over night (the cotton socks or gloves allows the skin to breathe and keeps the moisture in)

Good luck!

I have issues with dry skin and I use Aquaflor. It really helps. It is a bit greasy but after it soaks in my skin feels so much better. Also, you can try to add oil to lotion to make it more moisturizing. I do that in the summer when my skin gets dry. If he has a job where he washes his hands often (my boyfriend does) when he gets home give him a hand massage with oil or aquaflor. Coconut oil is a great nautral oil to help rehydrate skin.

Here are some good natural easy solutions.

1. Coconut Oil - this can be taken orally (work up to 2 Tbl spns twice a day), and applied topically. It can be used sparingly on ends of hair and scalp for dryness, as well. It works real well to apply liberally on dry hand and wear those moisturizing gloves whenever possible. It's the main thing that healed my dried and bleeding hands. And, it the best oil to cook with. Buy a quality brand in the glass jar for consumption. The one I buy in the cooking oil aisle is a little pricey, but has little odor and no real tasty. Go here for even more great uses: http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/coconut_oil_facts.html

2. Olive Oil - basically use like the CO above.

3. Moisten a cloth w/ some Apple Cider Vinegar. Apply to affects areas for a few minutes while you relax. Remove and let dry. Apply CO or OO.

4. Use a food processor (I use my Mag. Bullet) to grind some oatmeal. Make a paste w/ a little water and apply to affected areas, and wrap w/ saran wrap of gloves. Additional option: fill a tub with real warm water (1 1/2 - 2 gallons), and pour 1/4 - 1/2 cup of the prepared dry oat into water. Submerge hands and relax at least 10 minutes, longer if you have time.

5. Aloe Vera - apply liberally a few times a day. This is a great option to have in a small container to carry with you.

I've used all these options. I listed the them in the order which worked best for me, with number 1 being the best option, and so on. A few times I've used more than one method at a time for treatment. All were more beneficial than bought lotions. Stay away from Petroleum Products(which includes many lotions), those are byproducts from the oil from our earth. Remember, skin absorbs everything you put on it. So, if you wouldn't put it in your mouth, you really shouldn't put it on your skin.

In addition, dehydration (lack of H2O consumption, not just any fluid) plays a huge part. When your skin is dry on the outside, it's a sign that your body is to dry on the inside. Provide him w/ a reusable drink container and encourage, or insist (depending on his personality) that he always have a water container w/ him to sip on a few times per hour. Eliminating caffeine & any artificial sweeteners helps as well. Now, if he's dealing w/ chemicals & toxins in a work environment, that can also cause dryness. So, a suitable pair of work gloves may be helpful as well.

I samples some Surgeon's Skin Secret once. It was wonderful. It's easily found via QVC. I'd like to buy some, when I can afford. But for now, my inexpensive methods work just as well.

I hope something may help. Good Luck!

Avon makes some "lotion" called Silicone Glove, or that's part of the name at least. It's kind of like petroleum jelly, but more lotion-y, without being perfumey or girley. It stays on a bit through hand washing. I like it.

Cracked heal butter from Bath and Body Works. Also, if he can handle latex, apply thick layers of the Cracked Heal on his hands and pull latex gloves on for overnight or use the gloves sold at BBW. It works wonders on hands. I keep it with me because my hands are constantly in water from throwing pottery on a wheel. They can become so dry they crack to the point where the skin splits. I can't handle an infection because I have lupus (SLE) and Sjogren's disease (autoimmune diseases that hosed my immune system).

In addition to wrapping my hands as well as my husband's hands in the Cracked Heel (Cracked Heal) from BBW's with the gloves, I also add it to my and my husband's feet with thick socks to help soften our feet.

I used to have very tough feet, especially my heels because I used to go barefoot all the time . I could walk through corn fields, tobacco fields, and even on the levees in Louisiana where they spread crushed shell to give cars (vehicles in general) traction to use the levees when the roads are washed out. I could walk on them without shoes without problems at all. Today, that's a different story...

If I walk on hard surfaces like rocks and shell, I have to wear shoes because my feet no longer after the calluses they had once upon a time. My husband's feet are more tender now than they have ever been because I use Cracked Heal on his feet too as well as his hands. He worked construction in telecommunications and I've worked in about everything over the years including waitressing, on a shrimp trawler, scraping barnacles off ship hulls beneath the water line, repairing, setting, & pulling nets as well as crab pots, cropping, handing, and stringing tobacco as well as tossing up to put the sticks filled with tobacco in barns. I've done it all and my hands showed it once upon a time. Now, they are baby smooth even though I use a clay that has a fairly heavy consistency of grog in it.

Try Cracked Heal from BBW and wear gloves & socks for about a month. You'll see a major difference. It will be like night and day.

BTW, if you live near an outlet store for BBW, you can get Cracked Heal for next to nothing although it's not that expensive in the retail stores either. It's only about $12.50 for a jar and a little goes a long way even when applying it thick, which you need to do so the emollients soak in well to soften the skin. It's one of the quickest, cheapest, and easiest ways to get soft hands and soft feet as well as soft elbows of any product I've tried including department store brands (too thin & not enough of the good stuff in the product), expensive brands (so expensive yet so little product and it doesn't do what it claims in a third of the time Cracked Heal works), and it's easy to get your hands on than Avon or other companies you have to order from and then if you are like me, you could very well be allergic to the ingredients. I can't use Avon products at all because they add something in the ingredients that cause me to have an allergic reaction so I've stayed away from Avon for years. I do occasionally try a sample product to find out if they've taken out what I'm allergic to every so many years but the end result is always the same. At least with BBW, I can return a product if it doesn't work but so far, I haven't found anything that doesn't work. All I have to do is stay away from the wood-infused products because I'm allergic to things like Pine, Sandlewood, etc... Other than that, it's all good. I haven't found anything yet at BBW (again with exception to wood-infused items that go on the body directly or in bath water like the bath oils) that I can't use and that doesn't do a great job for me and for my husband as well as my kids. My girls grew up on Bath & Body Works.

BTW, don't worry about the scent of Cracked Heal. It doesn't have a perfumed female scent. Your other-half will do well with it. If he washes his hands frequently, have him apply a little bit to his hands afterward to help the process along but remember it does best to spend a full night over the course of about a month with gloves or footies/socks on with the Cracked Heal applied well to soak into the skin softening it while he sleeps.

I definately recommend Renew - like some of the others. My cousins hands were so bad that they bled and it healed her. You can get this at an on-line store that specializes in health and wellness. Preferred customers get a 30-40% discount - definately worth it. All customers are referred by others ... so you will want to check with one of the ladies who mentioned it.

There is a 50% version by prescription. Good luck on it working on hands... don't know why it wouldn't.
