Hi. I need help in finding a fun/different gift for a unique little Tween.(11yrs)

I lost touch with my niece and recently I've been catching up with her and it turns out she likes drawing outfits but not putting them together. I would like to get her something meaningful and or fun and differnet for her birthday.
She is a bit on the heavy side and real shy, I tried looking around for some type of design kit but was unsuccesfull.

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Ugh, why can't she like barbies. :)
Thanks.

What can I do next?

Does she like computers. I bet there is some program out there for kids that has to do with fashion. Also maybe there is a local craft store that offers sewing lession for girls. That could fun for her.
Hope you find something really cool,
A.

My niece is 11, and for Christmas we got her a book/craft kit for spool knitting. She absolutely loved it! She needed a bit of guidance and a day or two of practice, but then she was making bracelets and neckaces and rings for herself and my daughter also. I can't remember if it was put out by Klutz books or Chicken Socks, but both of those companies make great, crafty books that are just right for my niece. (In fact, it was hard to choose! I'll probably get her another one for her next present...maybe the one on paper fashions or bead rings....) You can find them at a book store, and sometimes in the toy aisles at Target.

Girls love to shop. I say get her a gift card to a store like clairs (jewerly and hair stuff, usually found in a mall) You can get away with spending $10.00 and she can get a few things. My daughter just turned 12 and she loves to shop there!

Good Luck,

T.

S.,
My 15 year old suggested beads, and wire to make her
own jewelwry with. I think Michaels or Beverlys has
some start up kits. My niece just got her first sewing machine this year for christmas, and she loves it. I gave her a lesson on it already, and she has done a few things on her own.(she is 10)

go to Aaron Brothers and get her a nice set of colored pencils and a sketch book. You could also get her a book on fashion design or history of fashion.

Check with Wee Scotty (now) on Divisadero in SF - ###-###-####. They offer design & sewing classes to Tweens. They may sell design books, too.
